Strangest thing you've eaten

Post » Sun May 29, 2011 1:26 am

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lomi_salmon. Raw chopped Salmon with onions and tomato - big in Hawaii (and very strong and fishy tasting).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poi_(food) Also big in Hawaii. Its about like eating purple-brown glue.

That Lomi Lomi looks delicious.

As for the Poi.... "Poi is a natural laxative, so it is best to avoid eating it in large quantities for obvious reasons."

Dried, salted Crickets and BBQ larvets. The crickets kinda tasted like sunflower seeds and idk what the larvets tasted like (besides gross).

Wait, people thing octopi are a strange thing to eat?! What the hell? Do you people also consider squids or shrimps to be strange things to eat? If that is the case then I win this thread by far, having eaten all three regularly (and still eating them, but unfortunately not as regularly).

Heck, I've also on many occasions eaten limpets, date-shells, mussels and more sorts of fish and crustaceans than I care to list.

Raw and alive, yes. Cooked. No, I've eaten my fair share of fried octopus, fried calamari and all kinds of shrimp. I've had raw oyster a long time ago. like 8 or 9. Tasted good but had the consistency of a giant booger.
Anybody here ever eaten a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durian? I hear you either love it or hate it. I think I might hate it.

LOOOOOL

Well I don't know what you consider "raw". Is it raw if it is not thermally processed but is sliced and mixed with a bit of olive oil and some vegetables?

I love sushi. Raw is the only way to eat seafood IMO; cook it and the flavour is just lost.

It was okay for me but I only had it one time. The only fish I usually cook for myself is salmon, but I noticed other types of fish don't seem to keep the flavour.

Have yet to try raw, wriggling octopus. :P

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwTH7bBgZhM You can't even kill it quick and easy first? Raw? Okay. Alive? That's just barbaric.

That looks insane. I would probably try it if I was there with them though.

I mean, raw and alive. As in at the same time. Raw can be anything before being cooked, atleast in my eyes.

The weirdest things I have probably ever eaten was sushi, and tripe. Ended up loving them both though.

I suppose the strangest thing I've eaten would be fried crickets. They are very tasty.

It's bothersome that most of the things in many of the above posts are things I've eaten on many an occasion. Squid, octopus, kidneys, hearts, tongue...

When I was 13, I went down to Mexico and our "guide" challenged us to eat ants....regular ol' black ants, right off the ground. That, to me, is the most unusual thing I've ever eaten.

Me too. I'm just saying the concept of that is barbaric. I'd try it, but I'd give it a quick stab through the brain, not let it go through the torture of being crushed by teeth. The tentacles and everything would still be moving and suctioning for a couple minutes at least.

Life is barbaric by default. :)

M?mmi is actually really good with sugar and cream. Contrary to what it looks.

True, only the way it looks might seem strange. Other than that it's just an ordinary grain pudding.

I've had alligator. It was tougher than chicken but similar. I've had various different seafoods though by eating sushi but I don't find them strange.

I eat a relative amount of offal (I'm Scottish... ;)) but the weirdest thing I've had was probably tongue. It didn't taste as chewy as I thought it would and I was sort of put off...

There's a restaurant in Edinburgh that boasts it's the only place to 'eat a safari' ;) and I had ostrich, kangaroo and zebra. All fairly okay but could have come from the same animal as far as my unsophisticated palette was concerned.
