HD Textures DLC is so huge!

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 4:54 pm

I checked them out, didn't have long because it was on my lunch break. I got no fps loss at all, still pegged at 60fps 95% of the time on my system. They are improved and you can tell the difference. There are a few that are still a little to low res, or where maybe not improved. Biggest one I noticed right away was the mountain rock texture, it still looks low res. I will unpack and verify tonight but I'm sure by then tons of other people will have screenshots and anolysis. Overall, I'm happy with them. All I wanted was the vanilla game with better textures, not style replacements.

Can I use modded textures with the DLC? :unsure2: I've deleted all mods.

Any loose texture files you have should load instead of the new ones.

I don't wanna bring down any spirit or anything, but that just looks like a bit sharpen in Photoshop. Not very good.
I'll hold my final judgement for more images...

No matter what, I still appreciate the effort of this from Bethesda. It shows that they care, and I care about that they care about us PC players :)

Awesome compared to texture mods or just compared to the vanilla game? It would be nice if I could remove some of the texture packs, but I'm not expecting a miracle.

They looks nice, takes away that compression effect on the textures that makes them look so ugly. They cannot go too far on quality otherwise they will use more than 1Gb of VRAM and I think the target of 1GB is good, since most people have that.

As long as they fix the mud that was the majority of textures, wave goodbye to texture replacers until they are complete. Then again I don't have the patience for updating mods I did 10 years ago!

So no more ugly specular aliasing/compression artifacts on the normal maps??

Not sure about normal maps but the textures look more like 1024x1024. I cannot download them yet but from that screenshot they look good as expected and reducing the brightness of the game can make them look better because they can look wash out like in GTA IV.

Performance is the same for me, haven't checked VRAM load. But no purple textures or anything weird.
My RIG:

-GiGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3L (Rev 1.1)-
-Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 @ 3.33GHz OC'd-
-6.00GB DDR2 952MHz 5-8-8-22 OC'd Flex Mode-
-ASUS GeForce GTX 460 768MB TOP OC'd (833/1055/1666)
-Windows 7 x64

There probably not as good as textures that came from the Nexus but it's an improvement all right, one which I'm happy with :D

The textures look sharper and there is no compression effect on the rocks like the ugly old ones, while some actually looked better than others.

Highres textures are usually only noticable up-close. Show us the chests, cupboards and other known ugly stuff.

Do you have a 64-bit or 32-bit Windows?

64-bit. I am validating the files now and it seems to be downloading. Hopefully that is the issue. Still not sure why the Creation Kit won't work though. It loads up just fine and then immediately locks and Windows notifies me it is closing it. I already downloaded it again and verified it. Still not working but it might be linked to the reason why it is redownloading. Will post back after it is finished. Thanks for the advice both of you!

You need closer comparisons. Worse quality textures don't look too bad from a distance because you cannot see the compression effect, it's like compressing a jpg image too much. I think you'll find that if you compare them at close range, there will be quite a large difference.

I really appreciate what Bethesda did: yeah, of course it won't satisfy the appetite of those of us who use 2048 or 4096 textures mods, but for the others who, until now, downloaded "lite" versions of the aforementioned mods, there is the added advantage of having everything "in-house" and cleanly packed (and we'll rely on more mods to fill in the gaps, anyway).

See them for yourself in-game and don't make judgements on people's compressed screenshots. Not only do Steam shots have high compression but some image host sites down scale them.
