I think it comes down to knowing that there is something about you of which your family wouldn't approve, and having to constantly police your actions in front of them so you don't slip up. That must be quite a [censored] feeling. Good for him for wanting to be more honest in his relationships, I say, regardless of the fallout that might happen... It's better to have a relationship based on truth rather than perceived truth.

Nope it's a fox, it would make sense for someone called Desert Fox to wear a dog, especially since there are no ingame dogs with similar textures.

But there are no dogs in the game that look like his hat. NCR/Fiend dogs are bald and scabby, Legions dogs are covered in thick brown fur and then theirs the random huskey dogs. It might be a coyote. But I'm sure it's mentioned in game that it is a fox.
