The Big Empty in Old World Blues....

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:52 am

There are not that many, I can only recall Alien Nation (that was a TV series) and District 9, when Aliens are not invading Earths it seems they are crashing into it and becoming legal Aliens.

I much prefer the little explored Human-Invasion, God how I hated Avatar.

Problem with Aliens is this, they have advanced technology due to their ability of space travel so they are a deal breaker ... if you add Aliens to Fallout then why exactly are they not helping to restore the world? Its a Deus ex Machina no matter what you do because they dont belong to Fallout setting, they are as much at home there as they would be in Firefly.

Exactly my point, the crashed scouting ship was all it needed to be; hell we should have something not even affiliated with an alien military force crash-land, like an alien civilian transport . Anything other than Mothership Zeta if their really has to be any alien references.

For the same reasons the combine in HL2 aren't helping to restore the world they just want to modify humans to make some form of super soldier to add to their armys.

while I do agree mothership Zeta was way overboard with it i still like having aliens in Fallout and would like more then just a crashed ship here or there. Like in between crashed ship easter egg and mothership Zeta
Also Avatar may have svcked becuase the hype killed it but it still managed to be better then half of the BS coming out of America in terms of film/TV in the past 8-10 years.

they don't belong in a post apoctolyptic rpg

Ok it makes sense they would use aliens since this game is kind of based on what some people during the early 20th century thought the world would be like. So in this case they do belong.

And thank you Daddy92 and MikeBreezy92. I forgot to check my favorite Fallout info website.

The Combine are invaders and they successfully invaded Earth, HL2 takes place after that.
Its not as the Visitors of V that were trying to do so covertly despite being capable of doing so using their superior technology, they did had reasons for that.

Fallout uses many of the 50's notions of the future, Aliens in those movies were pretty much how they were mostly used later ... invaders, the one that stands up is The Day the Earth Stood Still that goes off the opposite direction were Fallout universe ends up going.

If Aliens go beyond the Easter Egg they will overpower the setting, they simply have NO PLACE in Fallout as Mothership Zeta shown, if you think they gone "overboard" what would not be "overboard"? A Alien companion? A Alien Base? At what point does it became "overboard" since I say beyond those "Crash Site" Easter Eggs they WILL overpower the setting.

Also Avatar may have svcked becuase the hype killed it but it still managed to be better then half of the BS coming out of America in terms of film/TV in the past 8-10 years.

Avatar was a technical showcase for 3D movies, a old tech that dates back to "Monster of the Black Lagoon" and made a lot of money because of it, not because of the story and even less because of the hype ... its simply Pocahontas in Space, simple and relative effective if you want to show off effects, I would say Star Wars OT was about the same but had a more complex mixture of themes.

People now say it svcks because they are either doing hype backlash (its popular so it svcks) or because the story is really basic and only a vehicle to show off effects, like the Star Wars prequels except with better script and far better directing.

I would have to say that the fallout Aliens are invaders and like War of the Worlds they have a VERY protracted invading schedule.

Going beyond Easter-eggs doesn't overpower the setting. I've played Mothership Zeta and frankly I don't understand the hate for it. It was fun and fit the 50's alien invader/abductor/experiment stereotype. The only real problem with it that it was too cheesy, it fit the 50's stereotype too well. The overall theme of fighting aliens on a ship in space isn't a bad idea they should have just made it slightly more modernish.

As for Avatar most people forget that it took James 10 years to make and after 10 years its nearly impossible for anything to be good. Also most people forget as you said it was a tech demo, kind of like Portal 1 it was never meant to be good it was just supposed to look good. as for the plot yeah it was just Pocahontas in space but that still make it 10X more original then 70-80% of movies made in the last 6 years.

Aliens fit it's a game based on 50's era culture and there ideas of the future.

As for the Big MT (as it was tweeted) I believe it will be Area 51 but called the Big MT based in the mountain's surrounding the real Area 51 hence the MT.

I don't understand why people's rationale is, 'If it's like a 50's B-Movie/Pulp-Magazine then it's okay', the Fallout world is not set in the 50's; it's set 200 years now after the 50's world collapsed and nuked itself - it was never supposed to be paradise before the war, there were supposed to be food queues, riots and apparently showing two Canadians getting executed on national television in a newsreel was a-okay. Now whilst I never realy had much beef with Bethesda fleshing out the pre-war world like they have I don't like the way that everyone now is trying to emulate pre-war society; but in any event the 50's is a backdrop to the Fallout world, not the focus.

The ENTIRE SETTING AND ORIGINAL BASIS of Fallout 1 was based around how the 50's scifi B-Movies pictured the future would be its not to see why people are using the 50's B-movie/Pulp-magazine defense considering that was the whole point of the games setting. Bethesda if any tried to eliminate the 50's setting established in the first 2 games with Fallout 3. Fallout 3 was probably the most modern-day like one until Mothership zeta. It feels like Bethesda realized how they had deviated from the original purpose of Fallout then tried to cram as much 50's stuff into 1 dlc to try to make up for it.

"The Fallout world exists in an alternate timeline that split away from the history of the real world following World War II. Up until the Great War in 2077, the Fallout world was dominated by the distinctively American culture of the 1950s, though with a far more advanced technological progression. The Fallout world's setting is heavily influenced by the science fiction anthology Worlds of Tomorrow, which was released during the Golden Age of Science Fiction in the 1950s. "

I'n my own opion I'd like to see the big empty as like a small town and a hidden bunker cut off from the wrest of the world surrounded by mountains and that bunker filled with all kinds of pre-war awesomeness from what was the enclave controlled government or the early technological advances of the BoS. If there is to be a alien encounter I hope it is a alien that has pop culture refferences like that Paul moive lol.

Do you not get my point? The Golden Age of Tomorrow setting was BEFORE the war, find me this 50's imagining of the future in Junktown or the Boneyard.

We really don't need an abundance of aliens. Zeta gave the alien fans their fix and was a fun break from the norm, but there's no need to have them everywhere. Te WW Easter Egg was fine. Next you thing you people will want them as main antagonists.

I have two things I would like to say.

Gojira needed to be included in the fallout game. Giant fire breathing gecko named gojira (japanese name for Godzilla). We have found the file in the game we just need it active. I want godzilla damn it. Who cares if he could kill every last one of us.

Also the fallout people Bethesda/obsidian have already said under no circumstances would Area 51 be included as a dlc area. sorry for you hopeful few.

This!! Would be freakin awesome, I remember seeing this on the wiki and thinking "Oh god I hope I get to see this big badboy one day."
But no, just another piece of cut content..

I was under the impression that OWB was taking place in the Cheyenne Mountain area, where NORAD is based. If any secret government boogeyman stuff is going on, it'd be going on in a giant bunker complex where civilians have absolutely no access.

Area 51 is just a red herring.

Cheyenne Mountain is in Colorade, on the other side of the Legion and has already been confirmed as 'offline' in Fallout 2 on the Enclave's Intercommunications Network, PoseidoNet.
