Toughest monster so far?

Vampire Mages (don't remember the name)

They basically Absorb your Health, Heal themselves, deal tons of damage... force you to revert to save after you notice all your potions are gone and you haven't gotten anywhere.

[Spoiler]
-> Not sure even if Shadowmere can tank Vampire Mages in open-field
-> Giants can one-shot Shadowmere but late game Giants aren't a problem (Kiting+Bows ftw)

So in short, I'm only afraid of creatures/enemies that can kill cute ol' Shadowmere =3

Speaking of Shadowmere, what quest line did you complete to get her?

I'm new and early on in the game but I decided to walk up to one of those giants who looks like a tree. In about 2 seconds I was flying dead up in the stratosphere ten miles above land.

Nice, I need a horse that isn't straight up special. If I remember right from Oblivion, Shadowmere's AI was drastically different than the other animals.

As a pure archer, ice trolls, ice bears and ice wraiths are pain to kill. Though hardest monster to kill so far has probably been blood dragon. Sneaking won't help against them and they can kill me in 2 fire breaths.

Nothing is hard if you stack resists and armor :P

But the only npc that could bypass my armor stacking was a forsworn briar hearth warrior, and it isnt a problem if you stun/stagger him.

What I can't understand is that it is relatively easy to kill a fire/frost/lightning breathing, flying Dragon BUT a Giant or a Mammoth can kill you with 1 hit!!!

[I'm currently a Level 24 Nord, mainly 2-Handed Weapons (Ancient Nord Greatsword is my favourite), in Blades Armour (Superior), with Orc Gauntlets (Superior) and Steel Boots (Superior), and usually wearing one of the Dragon Priest masks I have (got 3 at the moment!)]

The toughest kill for me was on the 3 Brothers Quest - the 3 ancient Nords who murdered their father for his Amulet, "Gormalaud" (I think that's how it is written). Right at the end you meet all 3, and fight them one after the after, but the toughest was the second Brother, with his Dragon Shout!
He didn't actually kill me, it just became incredibly annnoying when he kept knocking me down, over and over again! During one of these 'knockdowns' he even managed me to drop my Blade of Whiterun (and I couldn't find it afterwards). Grrrrrrrrrr!

Why is it so difficult to kill a Giant, when a Dragon is so easy?
;o)

Beothiah Cultists at around level 30, my full heavy armored 2handed wield Warrior Goddess, manage to die like 6~ times to these fellows. The quest where you have to kill the other 7-8 remaining Cultists to earn the favor of Beothiah, they were armed with with Blade of Sacrifice which seems to ignore armor, also there was one mage would dual cast Chain Lightning, which managed to kill me in 3 hits. It was possibly the toughest fight I've encounter thus far into the game.

Giant is a easy kill if you have good ranged dmg, or lots of armor to survive its blows, dragons are suposed to be easy, and then scale to elder/ancient wich are much tougher.

Ice Wraiths have been difficult for me. They usually catch me in a wide open snow covered field. And they are hard to hit with an arrow.

Ran into a couple of frost trolls that I could NOT kill....eventually I just ran away.

The large sabre cats aren't overly difficult, but I keep running into pairs of them, and THAT makes it quite challenging.

Morokei when I was a lvl 16 Destruction Mage. Cripes that one had me on the edge of my seat.

Probably should have leveled up a little before fighting him but I like a challenge ;p

Oh those dragon priests! But as said by someone else worth it, remember to keep ALL the masks you get from them.

So I know Dragons are the big thing in Skyrim, but there are other things that have given me much more trouble.

The toughest monsters I've faced as of yet have got to be Wisp Mothers. Their three wisps hurt, and the explosions when they die are killer. And to top it off, the Mother itself runs around throwing Ice Spikes at me. Then when the Wisps are gone, when the Mother gets down in health, she spawns some shades that look like her but just do melee. They explode too, just like the Wisps. Of course, killing the Mother itself gets rid of the shades/wisps, but at least for me they had tons of HP and taking them out before the wisps and shades was just not an option. It's the energy explosions on death that really get me though.

Agreed on these wisp mothers.
Massive pain in the behind especially at early levels.

I agree absolutely, I keep all 4 of mine at hand, they come in very handy when you need a little boost for a particular task.
(I plan to get the rest too, but as they say - "best made plans of mice and men . . . ").

Totally agree with those wispmothers. I encountered one when I was just level 5 and I didn't realize that they would keep spawning shades whenever their health dropped below a certain threshold. So I kept sneak attacking her and running away. Soon enough I had over 100 shades chasing me down. It took me over a week in game time to finally kill all the shades and get back to killing the wisp mother, which by this time was bugged out and just stood there while I practiced my 2 handed skill on her. I was level 15 by the time I got out of there. Very thankful that arrows weigh nothing and I stole a whole bunch from guards at the beginning of the game.

Without a doubt, Draugr Death Overlord. Morokei was hard but these guys are unbearably so. Use of shouts, EXTREMELY high damage, Lots of HP/damage reduction. Words of advice - If you haven't faced one of these yet and you aren't at least lvl 30, RUN, run like hell.

This. I haven't had too much issue with anything yet. x3 Ice bears at once was a close call however. And the Death Overlord, during the first two swings of my Legendary Skyforge Steel Greatsword was going to be just another battle. But he hit me with a shout that disarmed me. Sent my sword flying. So now, here I am, 2 handed warrior nord with a bow backup weapon and a fire magic spell that might, just might, generate enough heat to light my cigar.

Spent the next 15 minutes running around the room blasting him with magic trying to kill him and frantically looking for my sword.

Killed him with magic and the majority of my potions and food in the long run and found my sword hidden away behind a pile of rubble. It was a tough battle but taught me a lesson. Now I keep a backup one handed blade and shield just in case I come across something like that again

I just ran into the Wisp Mother and Morokei on my Sneak Mage, playing on master difficulty. My 1st shot on the Wisp Mother raised me to 40 destruction and then it was cake. I kept it perma stunned with dual casting. It didn't touch me.

Morokei was another thing. Way too much hp and he would take 90% of my health in 1 hit. So for him I had to run after taking a hit, hide, and wait for him to stop looking for me. Then dump another full spell bar into him and repeat this about 10 times to finish him off. It was tedious, but not hard. When dumping my spells into him he stayed perma stunned also.

The hardest one so far was the Dwarven Sphere Master. I had 225 hp and that thing's range attack was still killing me in 1 shot. I had to shoot it from very far away, then duck around a corner and run when he came towards me.

I didn't have much trouble with the Death Lords. They stay perma stunned. And once I was out of spell points it was just a matter of run away and come back after I regen. Basically anything without a deadly ranged attack is cake.

before level 20, Draugr Deathlords. After Lvl 20 those [censored] chocurus or what they are that the falmer have as pets. seriously those bastards are the only thing i dread in the game as a Dual Wielding warrior. dragon priests are no trouble for me as a warrior or as mage as long you have the astronach sign, all those tasty spells allow me to keep healing in one hand and casting fireballs in the other.

Morokai as a level 16ish robe wearing Dunmer Destruction mage. Took me a few reloads to work out my strategy. I tried the far ranged thing and running around like a mad man and he kept owning me. Finally, I went up on his platform summon my atronach killed the last of the dudes up on the pillar from down there then Fas Ro Dah'd him and firebolted him to death. He went down like a sack of potatoes that time.

Wispmother was suprisingly easy I just let Lydia tank her and I just kept summoning Atronachs and running away from the shades like a little girl and drive by healing Lydia the whole time.

Am level 20 now and fought a Draugr Deathlord last night and I killed him pretty easy. Didn't really think about it till I read this thread. I musta got lucky against it.

Course I did have Lydia, my war-dog, Barbos the talking wonderdog and my fire atronach all at the same time beating on him while I pelted him with firebolts.
