Unofficial Anime Thread V

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 7:04 am

Welcome to the return of the anime thread. After a long break, we have been granted another chance to discuss anime in a centralized manner. Let's not ruin it and show them that their trust is well placed. Now for the rules. There are many new ones, so make sure you read them carefully:

1. This is for the discussion of all things anime and manga. Naturally this allows for discussion of related topics, but discussion is primarily about Japanese animation and manga. If you are not a fan of it, then this is not the place for you.

2. Be courteous of others and use spoiler tags when appropriate. This applies to all content both old and new.

3. Only anime/manga legally available in North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand are allowed to be discussed.

4. Discussion of episodes/chapters that have yet to be released in these regions is strictly forbidden

5. Discussion of imported Asian DVDs is forbidden due to it being impossible to differentiate between someone importing a DVD and illegally downloading.

6. Discussing or requesting where you can download anime/manga is completely forbidden. This is illegal and clearly against the forum rules. There are some stores that legitimately sell anime online, such as iTunes and Funimation's Download-to-Own, and you may mention these services in the thread.

7. Discussing/Linking to episodes uploaded to Youtube (and other user-uploaded video sites) by persons other than official license holders is completely forbidden. This too is against forum rules.

8. Content unsuitable for minors is forbidden. This being a PG-13 forum, such content is not allowed. This applies to images and other linked content: no nudity and no extreme violence/gore. Discussion of these more "mature" series is ok, just don't link to any images of the more mature content. And obviously no pormography, discussion or linked content.

9. All forum rules are in effect (ie: no trolling, flamebaiting, etc)

10. Please report any offenses when you see them.

11. Anything anyone is uncertain about should be asked via PM prior to posting.

Anywhoo. Got Spice and Wolf Light Novel for Christmas. Also Ordered Shana and Gunslinger Girl -Il Teatrino OVA. Probably going to pick up the Baccano! box set from Best Buy since I have a gift card for there.

Edit: Added Cobra the Animation (and side stories) and Yumeiro Patissiere to the simulcast list. We are on the verge of another season change, though it looks like the Winter season is going to be pretty dry as far as titles :(

http://www.crunchyroll.com/library/NATSU_NO_ARASHI_!, if you haven't checked it out yet, since you like School Rumble

I've been in a bit of a Fruits Basket mood lately (because I am a basket case :P), good series

And finally: Full Metal Panic! (and sequel series)

I was wondering, in Nexus (The ONLY store in Iceland that caters to nerdkind :( ) there is a lot of manga, could I get some suggestions about what I should get?

Must include:

-Humor

Must not include:

-Those horribly long action sequences (Like in Bleach and Naruto, dear god.)

And sorry if I'm a bit rude :P

Eh, missed Natsu no Arashi. School Rumble is a favourite though so should I check it out too?

Don't forget FMP Fumoffu. Along with School Rumble and Azumanga Daioh it still makes me laugh the hardest out of any anime.

I got the first season of Full Metal Panic, both seasons of School Rumble, and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Episode for this Christmas. I thought Haruhi was ok, I thought the Melancholy episodes weren't that great except for the first one. I did like the Mikuru episodes and the episodes after the Melancholy ones though. Currently watching FMP and I love it so far.

I quite enjoyed both of these. I found Baccano! exceeded my expectations, as it was initially of borderline interest to me. Judgmental error on my part.

Do you really want mangas (comics) or animes (cartoons) ? Anyway, all what I will name exists in both versions (all are adapted from the manga except Guu which was an anime before being a manga)

First I second GTO, very good and probably easy to find.
Hare + Guu (Jungle wa Itsumo Hare nochi Guu) is the funniest stuff I have ever read / watched, but I am not sure you'll be able to find it in Iceland since it's kinda underrated in the west. (The manga isn't available officially in english)

Then, I'll also suggest
Azumanga Daioh and School Rumble (two excellent high school comedies)
Gintama
. It follows the life of a samurai living in a modern Edo (ancient name of Tokyo) conquered by aliens. Basically, this is end of the 19th century japan with modern technology (well samurais still use swords) and conquering aliens instead of americans (who forced Japan out of its isolation)
The anime is awesome. It's mostly comedy, but the action is very well done. I don't know how good is the manga.

Some stuff for "otakus" (requiring knowledge about anime / japan to catch all the references)
Sayonara Zetsubou sensei
Welcome to the NHK

I watched the Escaflowne movie earlier and thought it was pretty good, though it seemed kind of rushed. The characters and story progression, just felt a little off to me. I was told someone who hasn't seen the series would be able to enjoy it, but I still have a feeling it'd help to watch the show to go along with the movie.

So, how is the Escaflowne series? More of the same that was in the movie?

I only watched the movie once and a decade ago in a very poor version, so I don't remember it much, but yeah, as far as I remember, the movie is a (kinda bad) mere summary / retell of the story of the TV series.

The anime was great a decade ago. It was the big thing alongside Evangelion, at the very beginning of the rise of anime in the west (when "fansub" was done on tapes) but unlike Evangelion, it's completely forgotten now.
You can't go wrong with giant mechas wearing capes and wielding good old swords, but what was outstanding on a technical level is not even worth mentioning nowadays and the plot never was that memorable in the first place. (and all characters have ridiculous awful long nose)

Still watching Sasameki Koto and started watching Azumanga Daioh yesterday. How in the world a 10 year old kid got into high school?
Also, FLCL will be out in Blu Ray in the future . Just heard on a site. Wait can I link to Japanator?

Full Metal Panic might be considered romance. Its got lots of military humor while adding teenage school romance into it.
