Unofficial Mincraft Thread #81

The only thing I see on Google for that extension is for custom made FaceGen data for Oblivion/Fallout 3/NV.

Nope. Build a RedPower-based bucket refiller to supply the water.

Sadface. Also do Steam Engines explode when the overheat? Mine are turning red.

Well I have had this game for a bit now. I'll just say that I'm addicted to it. Got a map mod, play on a server hosted by a local games shop in my town. Having lot's and lot's of fun creating new and unique buildings. I'll post a screenshot of how things are going later as I progress.

...
That makes a little bit more sense, I think. Was just curious as to why the bar jumped all the way up.

I'm making progress with the Tamriel->Minecraft world import. MIGHT have a world generated soon, I'll post pictures when I have em. I have the heightmap I needed, just editing it to work with the plugin WorldCreator. I'll post pictures when I have em.

Would caves and mines and ravines and strongholds and ores still be generated underneath all that terrain?

Probably not. I'd even be suprised if ores are generated.

You know how Mojang wanted to collect some basic metrics some months ago? Here's the results.

No, the idea would strictly be to recreate TES in minecraft, not to play survival minecraft. If we were able to get satisfactory terrain from it, it would be a creative map, always day, mobs turned off.

Keep in mind that larger interior environments can always be added in as a warp point or a different world. Entrances can be made to warp you to a location when you walk though. Once the overworld is finished, we could start on dungeons/caves, and that would need the use of such mechanisms.

What I have so far: http://tesfan.mchost.org/downloads/tamriel.png

Could anyone help edit the heightmap to fix the missing black spaces, and maybe smooth out some of the edges. I don't think there is much I can do about it, unless someone can find me a completed version of the Tamriel project, all in one .esm or .esp file.

damn, that svcks about no ore or cave generation. i was kind of hoping that the whole tamerial map thing would just be our normal vanilla server to play on.

We may be able to do some areas, but there isn't a tool out there to make it automatic, and it wouldn't be feasible while retaining any sense of scale. In order to pull this off, oceans/water level will have to start at around 27, so traditional minecraft generation isn't happening.

FyreUK made a Tudor-style town for their 100,000 subs, and they are planning to release it, too.

That is incredible. I'd love if we could do something even a tenth of the scale of that on our server.

On a creative map with a high level of coordination, it wouldn't be that hard. I've seen our people build individual buildings as good as that in survival, they'd just work at a faster pace on a creative map.

Hell that town TeeHee built on her own wasn't that far off.

It really isn't hard to do, even on survival. The "wow" factor of that video owes much to the organisation and spatial dynamics that the city has, rather than the buildings themselves (which are good). Clean, aesthetically pleasing roads, proper landscape development, and so on.

We can always maintain the closest materials possible using vanilla minecraft, then go back and make a texturepack for each region. When you visit the region, spout can automatically change the texture for you, and we can have a notification come up that says to change it for non spout users.

how do you intend to deal with biomes however? such as the deserts of hammerfell and the swamps of black marsh. you can not simply have those provinces be entirely swamp or desert so it would be up to you to some how add realistic biome features.

We certainly have the individual ability to build something like that. It's the togetherness and cooperation which I think is lacking.

I think that's possible. The guys from that hunger games video you posted managed to create an entire temperate biome map.

Well, I do think that's the sort of thing that makes creative mode worthwhile, and there's been hints of things like that already happening in our survival servers - Frostfall, Retro's IC-lite, etc, that suggest to me that SOME people would be willing to be a cog in a larger scheme, rather than going off on their own tangents. I tend to despise creative servers filled with nothing but mega-coasters and big Megaman sprites.

What is important, for something like that, is a plan. A framework... At minimum, a rough sketch of what is to be built, a sample guide building(s) showing general architectural design as well as basics like how many blocks per floor, a list of permissible materials and other constraints. Put a foreman in charge of the different construction areas, and have at it.

There's several maps like that FyreUK one available for download so that interested people can see the level of organization needed. Tank has already stated that there's enough oomph in the server to handle multiple maps, including a creative one if need be (And it appears, with the Tamriel map, that we may be leaning toward this type of tightly controlled creative project). All that is left is to get interested people signed up and assigned roles.

i like the foreman idea, perhaps there could be a sign up sheet for who wants to be in charge of a town or landmark. im not really sure how we would settle any kind of dispute between several people wanting to be in charge of significant lank marks.

however for now i think it would be a good idea for an admin to start a thread on the server forum just for such a sign up sheet in a poll format. have some one post a location/landmark they want to be in charge of and have people vote for themselves to be part of the construction team.

That's the one. In that case it looks like the plans are lost, unless the thread from Jamie's forum can be recovered.
