Unofficial Mincraft Thread #81

That's what planning the structure out is for.

And not particularly, no. I just don't want to see 'Community project? CREATIVE MODE FOR EVERYONE!' become a staple in the way the server operates.

Who says it is?

The world straddling dome of glass that makes eastern expansion a no-go.

The Frostfall walls that in no way required creative and seemed grossly unfair to the people living in Bridgeport at the time.

HA, just move North a bit. Plus, again, the glass dome was created by Tank.

The Frostfall walls were on a different map. Not to mention you all pooled your resources because of the RP. Even still, the walls were simple.

We have had many wonderful structures and cities built both by individuals and as community projects throughout the history of the server. During our time as admins, Wampbit and I always insisted that these things be built in survival mode (bar the very basics such as perimeter walls and town hall for a spawn town), and yet built they were, and this is something I firmly stand by. So what if it takes a couple of weeks to build a big project? A couple of weeks is not a long time at all. Nor is a month. Hell, a project built over the course of 2 months through the persistent toil of the community would be far, far more worthy of awe than something built in a couple of days on creative.

[cliché]It's not about the destination, it's about the journey.[/cliché]

Answer: Some of us have lives.

At any rate, move the [censored]ing to the server forum or talk to Tank about it.

Answer: Some of us have lives.
You don't need to tell me. I work overtime most days and am away at weekends. My scope for playing Minecraft is rather limited right now. But if I were to just ask for creative mode so I could complete my projects with minimal effort it would be a pretty hollow accomplishment. It's the same feeling of "meh" that I get when I see things that other people have built using spawned materials. There's just not so much to appreciate.

Woah, I peeked my head in at the right time!

Papa is right; some of us have lives. I have absolutely NO interest in spending mind-numbing hours in mines or whatever just to build something that I could make in Creative mode in seconds. People say "Oh you'll feel so much better if you gather the materials yourself!", I don't. I feel like I've wasted my time.

Oh, and don't pull out the Frostfall walls argument, we all know Creative Mode was used to build that bridge in Bridgeport.

Anyone wants to play creative-ish, there's already been offers of materials from myself, Martyr, Turns, etc. I've supplied chests worth of stone and brick, lots of glass and coal, iron and wood, hundreds of glowstone on this map. Since people like me don't mind the resource extraction end of a survival server, it's a natural step to make use of our services for a collaboration as a stepping stone, prior to going 'full creative'.

I'm not going to denigrate anyone or their projects, though, however they decide to build them. I like seeing, well, stuff. To me it's all good.

This is not the place for complaints about the server. We have a forum for that.

And just how many admins were living there?

Easy fix options; Creative for all, or Creative for none - no exceptions. Sorted. :deal:

Yep and problems from elsewhere belong there and not here. Don't drag other sites problems into this one folks.

thanks!

Also while there is a gathering; I suggest implementing the previous LIFT mod along with the current one, it works better for creating secret bases and such, whereas the current one is more decorative and obvious.

These controversial ideas are always introduced by people who rarely, if ever, play on the server. We get into these heated debates, they get implemented after dividing the server community, and then the proposer is never seen or heard of again.

You're on a survival server. If you want to build that horrendous Vivec thing do it the conventional way. Otherwise use creative single player. It's hardly fair to change the server "rules" (as we always do) for the benefit of a few.

Edit: Ah crap, saw your post just now Summer. My bad.

I have made a thread on the server forum under Minecraft General. I suggest we move all of this current discussion there.

Not when we've already built many such community structures without the need for cheating. Hell, several of us were off building a new city for everyone on several different occasions, and we had no need to use creative tools.

(speaking of which, have we given up on the Japanese lighthouse?)

I'll be on more after my grandads funeral, not really been feeling up to it but I don't want to give up on it.

I've been a bit sick of gaming lately, I was just wondering if I should continue with it now since I only have half a clue what sort of building it should be. :P

The only problem with it is gathering all the snow really, the actual building should continue straight up the same way ad it has been, but towards the top teh gaps between the rooves should get shorter.

Mining snow is easy enough (it's everywhere).

If I'd built it myself I'd have it up in a day, but I don't want to build it and do it wrong. For example, are the different tiers supposed to be smaller, as in the real Mahota Pagoda, or is it the same size inside all the way up?

Like you said about the bridge, it doesn't have to be forced to copy something, just whatever looks best, after all it is a test.

Use your initiative, it's a tower for gods sake :P

I think one problem with using snow as a primary construction material is the tedium of gathering it. If we're to attract other players to the city, I think we might need to come up with a theme that people can buy into a little easier.

I can store stacks of snow that I've collected fairly easily, I don't mind collecting it if other people want to build with it. Since Tank brought in that mod that lets snow stack up to 64 it's easier to collect for block-making anyway.

(and personally, ten minutes shovel spamming on the surface is infinitely preferable to an hour of digging underground :P)

I'll get the lighthouse built today, and see what people want to do in regards to city building then.

At least when mining you have tue chance to break the monotony by finding goodies like ore, with snow there is nothing to break that boredom.

Not so much now, given that valuable ores are far less likely to spawn outside of caves.

Not true. The ores are added to the chunks before the cave generator is called. It just seems like that because you can't see through the stone.
