Question and Answer
Spoiler

Q: What is this share map thing?
A: A Minecraft share map is a singleplayer map that one person plays at a time. They have a set amount of time to play it, and when they're done, they upload the map for the next player in the queue. Rinse and repeat. That way, you have a single world with a shared creative vision without the multiplayer.

Q: How long will I get the map for?
A: Turns last 3 days. You have those 3 days to: download, edit, upload, and post the link in this thread. It's your responsibility to upload the map prior to the end of your last day (GMT time).

Q: What if I'm not ready for it?
A: Your assigned time is listed above. If you know your upcoming turn won't be good for you, post ahead of time and you can be bumped down the queue. If that happens during your turn, you can have the map again in the next rotation - just upload what you've already done, if any. Please be sure to upload or post on time, though!

Q: What if someone doesn't acknowledge their turn, doesn't upload in time, or griefs?
A: These things impact other players, and we want to keep them to a minimum. Griefing will cause the map to be reverted to the last save, and the player to do it will be banned from the share map. If you are late and impact someone else's turn, you will lose appropriate time your next turn (and the player affected will gain that time), rounding up to the nearest DAY. Subsequent such incidents may lead to the loss of a turn or an outright ban, but we don't want it to come to that.

Q: Are there any special rules?
A: The only big rule we ask is to please play on 'Peaceful' because we wish to preserve the built structures. Other than that, simple etiquette takes over. If you use things, try to replace some or all of it. Leave resources for the next player. Don't deliberately explore beyond the boundaries of the map (you can use F3 to see) since it'll bloat the world file size. Don't destroy their creations (at least, not without asking), even if they don't meet your standards.

Q: How can I download/upload the map?
When you download the map, unzip the save to your %appdata%/.minecraft folder, change the name of the folder (adding 1 to the round or session as appropriate), then start the game up. For uploading, zip the folder and upload the zip file to a file hosting service such as http://www.megaupload.com/.

Q: Can I be a part of this?
A: Of course. Just post in this thread that you want to join, and you'll be added to the end of the queue.

Regarding late uploads: please read the Q&A red section, which I have just added. I do concur with some that some sort of consequence is appropriate because these incidents can and do adversely affect the next player in line and their editing window. My personal goal isn't to police things, but to promote fair and equitable sharing. Thus my recommendation of a base 1 day deducted (transferred, actually) for instances where the map is uploaded late but within a day. Additional consequences would be reserved for second and third offenses, or if there is complete failure to communicate.

If you disagree (or agree), send me a PM. I would have done this via PM from the start, but it seems people look to these posts as the 'standard' for the share map, and so I felt something had to be put forth. Everything above (everything!) is able to be changed at the request of any of you.

These changes have been reflected (in blue) in the turn schedule at the top. And ali, I have added you at the end. Since griefing on the share map is totally reversible and a waste of time, I'm willing to let you prove your desire to be constructive. Heck, you can always burn things as you wish - after having uploaded the map!

Here are the latest maps for the shared map, as of dudeordudet's turn.

http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/4457/sharedmapasofr3s3.jpg

http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/7072/mapisometricasofr3s3.jpg

The edges of the isometric map are the actual edges of how much we've actually explored (plus any land rendered because of the view distance), while the edges of the normal map are a result of me walking along the boundary to fill any gaps.

As for the whole dudeordudet drama, well, first off I'm sorry that those of you not involved in the shared map had to suffer through the bickering. I honestly had more faith that we could have a logical, quick discussion on what to do. Instead we argued about everything but what to do. Silly me, I guess.

I agree with Mr. E's stance on the matter, and since mrcrazy_monkey wanted a punishment, Nuck didn't, and everyone else didn't speak up, I'm assuming this decision will stand. That said, because it seems to have worked well for the server, once I have time to do so I'll just make an official "argument forum" in which we can argue with each other all day long, and maybe even make group decisions if we get around to it. Hopefully we can put off having to make another decision until classes end and I'll have time to set up such a forum.

Alrighty then. Argument over. Now lets get back to talking about why Notch is a trendy totebag, or a son of a chipwhich, or whatever we talk about in this things.

Edit: Typos everywhere...

I find so much coal that I just ignore it when i find it most of the time. There's just so much that I know I'll find some if I just find an open cave.

Actually, I think I'm gonna have to pass on this turn. I've been very busy lately, and frankly all my time has been invested on the server with the huge project I've undertaken there, rather than the share map: On top of it all, thanks to familial troubles, I may have to end up taking care of my 1 1/2 year old nephew today and tomorrow, leaving me with little time to invest. So I'm gonna have to give this turn a pass as well. Sorry.

With Webster's spot vacant and Webster moving down to June 14-16, we are looking for someone to edit the map now. They'll have till May 14 - so already an extended turn. Anyone can pipe in and claim this spot.

Well I can't- as much as I'd like to- due to this week being finals week, however technically, if nobody else claims it, you could always take the turn Mr. E. Knowing how fast you work, you could probably get a huge amount done with all that time.

Sure thing, go for it! I believe you can find it in the last thread. I'll put you into this slot. It ends May 14.

Which makes the turn schedule the following:

Share map

Current turn: Webster. Next up: The Gate Keeper

Turn Schedule

May 9-14: mrcrazy_monkey
May 15-17: The Gate Keeper
May 18-20: Ratwar
May 21-23: The Greatness
May 24-26: the fishy wanderer
May 27-29: Antibody
May 30-June 1: Mr.E
June 2-4: vacant
June 5-7: Ali
June 8-10: Nuck

Also... dudeordudet has dropped out of the rotation for the share map - by his own choice.

Webster... There are now two is now one vacant slots to be found earlier - you can feel free to slot yourself in to it if it works better for your schedule. (The end of the line is also 3 days earlier, too).

I really hope we go with player-run chest shops instead of the magic shop that always has everything available.

We don't have any big projects. A lot of us just build small projects, or projects that benefit the community like the portals. Just try to replace what you use.

What monkey said... We haven't had any big projects yet, unless the 'town' counts as one (though it's rather bare-bones right now, so it'd probably fail by those criteria.) You can feel free to start one if you like. Otherwise, just build what you want, where you want - though since we all have to download the map, please don't travel too far to do it (it bloats the filesize a lot).

Ug...so discouraging. My roommate and I made an expedition to go caving. Found a small pocket of monsters that had gold, diamonds, everything. I was on a sniping perch, picking them off until a skeleton hit me and I fell to my death. I found my way back and sacrificed myself to blow up the Creeper to kill the five or six new monsters that had spawned. We thought the coast was clear, so my roommate went in and blocked himself off so he could get my stuff from the first death. Then a zombie snuck up behind him somehow and killed him.

Add that to my roommate taking a swim in lava and all in all, we lost 3 or 4 diamond pick axes, 40+ iron ore, probably some gold, 2 minecarts, diamond shovel, a couple swords, a bow and two stacks of arrows, and miscellaneous other stuff.

Yeah, we're done playing for tonight.

Why would you bring more than one diamond pickaxe on a mining expedition? Or did you make them from the diamonds you found?

I usually bring a bucket of water to solidify any lava that may cause me trouble.
