Unofficial Skyrim DLC Discussion - Thread #8

indeed they did say point lookout size, maybe a tad bigger.

and point lookout took place in its own new area with a means to get to and from it (riverboat) as well as having a main quest, side quests, new places to explore, different atmosphere, weapons, clothes, etc.

i would say it was half the size of shivering isles. so i would not expect a whole new world to explore (i was starting to think darklight/morrowind but that might be to large an area) so im not thinking anything in a different province (hammerfell, Elsweyr, etc.) and if it is it will probobly only be on the border and not give us too much to explore.

DLC cost for all the decent sized add ons in the past was $10 U.S. (800 MS points) this does not include S.I. expansion or little things like horse armor.

I am looking foward to the DLC, i bought all oblivion DLC (except horse armor ) all fallout 3 DLC, and all Fallout NV DLC, in the case of fallout 3 and NV i spent more on DLC then i did on the games themselves. but i have always enjoyed everything i have played. Support for skyrim has been great, sure its been buggy (its a massive game, they tend to be) but the have included alot of free fix's and game improvements to try and solve issues so thanks

trying to patiently wait for DLC with money in hand, thank you Bethesda, love your work
A devoted fan...slow clap.
I think we can expect the support they gave the game(us) from a big company like Bethesda. We paid for their product, didn't we?It's not something we should pat their backs day and night. And that they add new features like the killcams and stuff is nice and i'am thankful but now that i've logged over 200 hours and probably the majority of players have too.I think it's pretty late to come up with such things now. These things should/could have been in the game at launch.Close combat gets killcams from the start and magic, bow not? What kind of logic or design decision was that?

In case anyone wondered how big Point Lookout was map wise:

I can't shake the feeling of a DLC involving the island of Stros M'kai...

That's awesome, but could it still be possible that Bethesda would still do this despite the mod?

Just shooting in the dark here, honestly.

Why does everybody like Solstheim so much? I never played Bloodmoon, but from what I gather the island was very much like Skyrim. What's the big fascination with it?

I'm not saying it's a bad idea, I'm just saying it sure comes up a lot for some place that we've (sorta) already been.

I think they recently said that the dlc will be about the size of Point Lookout for Fallout 3. I never played Point Lookout. Exactly how big is that?

Point Lookout the Landmass is maybe the size of Solsthiem, but there's not as much content overall.

If you played New Vegas, Point Lookout is about as big as Zion Canyon in Honest Hearts, but Point Lookout actually has slightly more content.

To be honest... 6months and no announcement, with their massive team, if the size of the expansion/DLC is the size of Point Lookout, I'd actually be surprised, and not in a good way. I assume maybe their pre-release goal was only Point Lookout size, but after the totally unexpected success of Skyrim (They seriously did not expect it to move 3.5million units in two days) they probably figured that the backing exists now to upscale their DLC to bring more ambitious visions to life.

I only read the summary of the books, Infernal City and Lord of Souls, but to my understanding, Umbra (the sword) now rests in Solsthiem. That's the only reason I'd really like to see a Solsthiem DLC.

I was actually hoping that we'd get to visit Umbrial in the Skyrim Expansions, maybe I misread, but I think Umbrial was destroyed by the end of Lord of Souls.

I know that it is obviously too late to put forward a suggestion for the first DLC, however I hope there is still room for sharing ideas about the other future DLCs and updates.

So here is a bunch of ideas which could in my opinion add to the game.

Animal Warriors :

Three types of beast warriors are described in real-world Norse myhtology, namely the Berserkers (who are bear-related), the Ulfhednars (who are wolf-related) and the Svinfylkingars (who are boar-related). Given Nord Berserkers have already been featured in Bloodmoon, I think all three would perfectly fit Skyrim. All three could be added as joinable factions, together with new related armors and weapons sets, quests, places, and perhaps even spells.

New dungeon types :

It would be nice to have new kinds of dungeons. Here is a bunch of examples I heve thought to.

Ayleid ruins in the Southern Skyrim. Maybe Heldon, which is mentioned in the Song of Pelinal and the location of which remains unclear ?
Daedric ruins à la Morrowind.
Old Fort, built with huge porphyry blocks, described in the first Pocket Guide to the Empire.
Velothi stronghold near Morrowind border. Possibly taken by the Thalmor ?
Ancestral Dunmer tomb, near Morrowind border.
Ethereal fortress with walls and towers of mist and ectoplasm and glowing dust, home to a Whisp Queen, and her daughters and sons, and some enslaved adventurers and creatures worshipping Her, some of which are already ghosts. Maybe with some ethereal flora providing unique powerful ingredients and an ethereal forge used to craft phantasm-like weapons.
Crystalline dungeon similar to the inside of Azura Star, inside Geode veins.
Dungeons related to the mysterious builders of the Sky Forge, the Underfoge (and the Lunar Forge?).
Foresworn Temples
Temples to the Nedic totemic deities (other than Dragons).
Megalithic citadels.
Dungeons inside colossal statues.
Icy Volkhiars manors under frozen lakes.
Ice castles.
Dreughs' Castles of Glass and Coral.
Cammona Tong's thugs.
Stalhrim tombs.
Underground or submersed remains of the Ice Tribe Haven.
Dungeon immersed under a lake.
Where the Spriggan go -- the Spriggans of Solstheim were able to resurrect after being killed ; it would be nice to visit some vegetal realm where their souls go between their deaths and resurrections.
Troll holes (where they worship the Udyrfryte Matron?).
Impish citadel.
Goblin's stronghold or village. Possibly involved in trade with Orcs ?
Ogres' underground dwelling or town, near Cyrodiilic border. Maybe with a Temple to Malacath. I see it pretty well built by ogres using the bones of countless creatures.
Some Minotaurian town, providing information regarding the link between Morihaus and thu'ums.
Greenhouses.
Kwama hive or egg mine. Some Dunmer merchant could have imported Kwama eggs before the Red Year, and decided to use them to found some Kwama colony in Skyrim. It would be nice to see whether their species has adapted and evolved since the events of Morrowind.
Underwater dungeons claimed by the Sea of Ghosts during the Great Collapse.

More lore :

More lore, added through engravings in dungeons, frescos, new books.
New dialogue lines with Giants, or Draugrs who don't attack the player immeiately on sight, or Falmers.
New dialogue about creatures, plants, farming, ores and materials, alloys, arts and crafts, clothing, weapons, armors, alchemical ingredients, potions, food, recipes, geography, History, economy, ecology, Daedras, soul gems, artifacts, religions, about the Ancient Gods of the Foresworn, about spells, enchanting, stars, cosmology, fairy tales and legends, some perks and powers, ...

More depth in the society and economy of Skyrim :

It would be nice in my opinion to have more depth and more plots questlines involving societal issues like the tensions in Markarth, but also moonshine, moon sugar and skooma and other illicit, clandestine trades, prostitution, alcoholism and addiction, illnesses, racism and other hatreds and those suffering from it, quarrels about ownership of some farmlands etc...
It would be nice to see plots and questlines involving justice, laws and trials, or involving politics and the Moot.
I don't find Forts as realistic as they could be. For example, Snowhawk was once considered a town. Some Forts should in my opinion be more like (fortified) towns : some merchants could try to benefit from the presence of soldiers and try to sell their goods to them ; some farmers who lost their farm due to a Dragon attack could be welcomed.

More depth to the ecosystem of Skyrim :

I know those are details, but they could add to the immersion, in my opinion.

Some features could be added to the fauna and flora of Skyrim, which I think are missing :
Some fauna and flora from Morrowind and Oblivion could be encountered in borderline areas.
Some small and not-so-small creatures could be added, like mice, woodlice, centipedes, beetles, swarms of bugs, blackbirds, thrushes, magpies, ravens, real bats (ones you can interact with), otters, beavers, sparrows, alpine choughs, lynx, chamois, ibex, mallards, eiders, swans, peacocks, wild boars, snakes, wolverines, megatheriums, whales, narwhals, and so on... In other words, more diversity at any scale.
Besides, AI should be improved. For example, sabercats shouldn't stalk the player outside its territory, and if it does, it should be to the risk of having to fight with another sabercat. Other example : if I killed two wolves in one shot in front of a third one, why does this third one attack me? It should rather flee. If I kill a wolf without being noticed by another one, maybe the second one should push the dead body of his pack brethren with his muzzle, moan and yelp. If I then reanimate the corpse he should perhaps growl as if he smelled something which disgusts him.
There should be cubs, and wolf parents should protect them. This would make more sense for wolves to attack a heavy armored warrior to protect their children rather than because they want to eat what seems very untasty...
Also, hop and (black) ironwood trees are missing.
The links between Spriggans and trees should be deepened.
Weather affecting the quantity and quality of crops (and hence the economy and health of the inhabitants of Skyrim.)

Various other things :

A new Umbra'Keth created by the war between Stormcloacks and the Empire, and by the Foresworn's guerrilla. Shadowmages.
Healing Dragon shouts, that is shouts that heal the caster or his allies.
Alchemical ingredients taken from Dragons.
Weapons made with flint and armors made with black ironwood.
Ability to launch protecting spells like invisibility or stoneflesh on allies.
Ability to use staves as a blunt weapon. With related perks.
Possibility to become a city guard and to conduct investigations.
Addition of a joinable healer's guild and a prosttute's faction.

As much as I'd love to see the new Solstheim with all the changes that happened, It's too similar to the mainland Skyrim setting.. a more alien place for a change would be far more interesting

Solstheim is a horrible location for DLC. I don't want more Skyrim. Give me something new, different, complete contrast.

I thought I could also make a synthesis of everything I have suggested or wished for DLCs so far, together with ideas of other people I have liked.

So here is what I hope or merely would find nice for the DLCs to come :

Integration of what is mentioned in lore but absent from the game :

The missing places
Werebears
Stalhrim
Black ironwood trees
Saunas
Lore-friendly Volkhiars
Something around the assassin born with a knife in the place of his hand, mentioned in Greg Keyes' books

New places to explore :

The places I would love to visit are the following :

The places mentioned in the previous games and supposed to lie in Skyrim, which are missing from the game.
The Castles of Glass and Coral of the Dreughs.
Roscrea.
Olenveld.
Stirk (cause it is probably a place of high tension between the Empire and the Thalmor).
Stros M'Kai.
Solstheim
Borderline areas : Blacklight, Heldon, Snowline, Fearfrost, the Temple of Twilight, Dragon Fields, Dragonstar, the Pale Pass...
Orsinium.
Maybe remnants of Umbriel.
Spoiler
Some inner realm located inside the Geode veins of Blackreach, similar to the inside of Azura's Star.
Some Daedric Realm. Maybe the Battlespire.
The realm of the insect God worshippe by Nilichi.
Maybe Anequina or Pelletine (not both, cause it would be too much for a Shivering Isles-sized DLC), cause I would love to know more about the Void Nights, but I also think they would probably deserve a whole game, which is more than a DLC.

I would rather not see a whole new province as it would deserve an entire game. Similarly, I would rather not see a complete eradication of the Thalmor, as I would rather see the conflict between the Thalmor and Humans as a key feature in the next elder scrolls series. But the DLCs could prepare for it.

New quests given by deities :

By the Divines among the Eight who don't give a quest in the game so far
By Talos
By Jyggalag
By Sai, Grellan, Ebonarm, Druagaa, Ius
By Shor
By Morihaus
By Trinimac (I know he's supposed to be dead, but some Orcs already tried to revive his cult)
By the Ancient Gods of the Foresworn
By the nine totemic deities of Ysgramor's Nedes
By the insect-god worshipped by Nilichi

More lore and interactions and plots around the non playable races :

By non-playable races, I mean Giants, Falmers, Spriggans, Hagravens, Dremoras, Trolls, Whisps and Whispmothers, Goblins, Dreughs, Imps, Ogres, Draugrs, Men-of-'kreaths, Minotaurs, and so on...
I would love to be able to discuss with some of them, to find questgivers among them, and to discover more on them. Moreover, those who aren't featured so far in the game (and some of those who are) could provide new armors and weapons sets. If they worship deities that are so far unknown, it could lead to new realms and artifacts.
A falmer uprising would be nice.

More lore, introduced through engravings, statues, frescos, books and dialogue.

More diversity :

In the flora and fauna (small creatures like bugs, sparrows, snakes, etc...)
In the scenery (that is, new places to visit, as I already said)
New weapons and armor types (spears, crossbows, slings, throwing weapons!) and fashions.
New creatures (like this soulbug or the Goblins we saw in the Game Jam)
Variations in fur and more diversity in the faces of the people of non-playable races
More dungeon types

More depth :

More options and outcomes in the quests that already exist, new quests related to the already existing factions
More consequences to the choices one made
More possibilities of interaction with the NPCs, especially the spouse, trainers and followers
More depth to the economy, justice and politics of Skyrim ; implementation of the Moot
More werewolves
Possibility to join the Thalmor, the Silver hand, Necromancers, the East Empire Company, Stendar's Vigilantes
Possibility of betting, organizing [censored] fighting, arm wrestling, playing card games and chess-like table games in taverns.
More non-lethal ways of ending battles, fights and quests, and a better AI. Possibility to immobilize people and force them to leave their weapons and surrender. Much less people who attack immediately on sight : why do so many NPCs attack me without even knowing why I come near to them? For example, I could go to some Bandit lair in order to propose them a lucrative association leading to a clandestine trade...
More realistic animal behaviour and ecology
Possibility of farming
Forts which welcome some people who aren't necessarily soldiers and who seek shelter in exchange for providing services to the soldiers (in fact, more realistic life in Forts)

New factions :

The Foresworn
The various city guards
The Thalmor
The Penitus Oculatus
The Morag Tong
The Camonna Tong
The College of Whispers
The Synod
The Silver Hand
Stendar's Vigilantes
A Seafarer's guild
A Pirat fleat (An occasion to meet Velehk Sain again?)
A Healer's guild
Skooma smugglers
A Necromancer's faction
A prosttutes' Guild
Beast-related warriors (Berserkers, Ulfhednars, Svinfylkingars)

Enhanced crafting:

Armor and weapons deterioration through use, need to repair them
Spellcrafting
More materials
Various special forges
Weaving
Wood carving
Runes
More complex crafting
Use of alchemy in the making of alloys and tempering of weapons
Named soulgems, the nature of the soul should provide benefits and drawbacks to the enchanting
Possibility to add modifiers to the enchanting like "more efficient in daylight" or "more efficient against Clavicus Vile's servants".
Crafting and enchanting arrows

New features:

Falconry
Healing Dragon shouts
Some Way of the Voice perk tree, which would require Dragon souls to unlock
Climbing abilities
New items, spells, quests, creatures, and more of everything!
Everything we saw in the Game Jam, except Dragon mounts and the Vampire lord stuff, which doesn't seem compatible with the existing lore on Volkhiars.
Good surprises!

Other :

I hope there'll be at least three major DLCs, each about the size of Bloodmoon or Shivering Isles. Some minor ones besides them would be nice too.
Some people are complaining about the long time they have to wait before any announcement, but actually I am glad of that. The more we are waiting, the more time the developpers have to craft wondrous DLCs, and the more ambitious they may be.

What else would you like to see or what wouldn't you like to see among these? What are your own hopes and fears?

I think so too. I think that given the unexpected success of Skyrim and the fact it is getting really famous, they have come to be really, really ambitious. I hope we'll have something huge, and I really think we'll have a very good surprise. Maybe we'll all be blown away and stay stunned. :tes:

Skyrim is the first Elder Scrolls game I ever played, so obviously I've got no idea of the entire history of the places the game has been.

Obviously, you can see other places the series has already been. I think it would be more than just a "coincidence" (and VERY poor design choice) to simply have it say "you cannot go here" vs. that being unlocked eventually by DLC release.

I am 100% all-in for buying any and all DLC that result in new places to explore. If it's for "horse armor" (as one person put it), then forget it. I've enjoyed Skyrim, went through once and completed the Imperial questline and then started again and completed the Stormclock line and all of the guild quests except the Thieves one because it locked up at me right at the very end. I'm still having a great time exploring but once I find 100% of the locations, it'll go back into the rotation until DLC comes out.

That being said, rarely have I ever played a game where the controls feel so NATURAL, and I feel like I'm that person in the game. I think Blur is the only other game I've ever felt that with.

Solstheim has changed much since we last visited it,Now its full of dark elves. Thats like the main land for the dunmers now i think,or most of dark elves from vvardenfell fled to solstheim,Nords of skyrim gave it to the dunmers,I guess the dunmers of solshteim is the survivors of what happened to vvardenfell.
Also i dont want Solstheim to be the location of the DLC,but i would like it anyway if it was te location.
But as you say, something different :) would be great.

Various other things : A new Umbra'Keth created by the war between Stormcloacks and the Empire, and by the Foresworn's guerrilla. Addition of a joinable healer's guild and a prosttute's faction.

i thought about how the might be able to make staves be able to shoot speels and also be able to be used as blunt weapon. the only way i could see this working out is if ether you only have it in one hand or some staves become 2 handed. and this is how my idea works. so the right triger would fire the spell and the left triger would have you hit the person or what ever when the enchantment runs out. just like if you have a bow and if some one gets to close you can bash them with the bow.

I wonder if Bethesda will stick to making expansions that are strictly new quests and items like they always did, or will they take chances and add new gameplay elements as well like new skills

I'm trying not to get myself thinking of any good expansion/dlc ideas because I don't want one of my ideas not to be one of the things we get and then be disappointed...

I couldn't help myself though at thinking a bo staff since spears might be a possibility since that seems to be a big want by almost everyone of these forums. I mean they would be considered the blunt version of it right? So there wouldn't be a lot of difficulty in taking off the spear head so I think it should be included.

Also, the idea of throwing knives would be sweet. I am only sticking to wondering about more weapon diversity since I want any non-weapon feature to be a surprise to me.

-snip-

You always have some great ideas, Verbose - perhaps you ought to try your hand at making something in the CK?

Solthseim anybody? Fits the bill from what they've said...
I don't like the idea. I'd rather it be west Morrowind (this part of landmass is roughly 1/6 of Skyrim and thus, in relation to the main game, as big as Point Zero was in respect to Fallout). As mush as I loved some parts of Bloodmoon, Solstheim itself was boring and the weather was as bad as Winterhold. I think I've seen enough snow storms already.

I've put a few hundred hours into Skyrim so far and enjoyed every second of it. I finally maxed out my character and am running out of things to do. Therefore, I will post a few of my ideas for the DLC that is going to be released soon.
1. Reassignable skill points: Now that I am maxed out I regret spending points into unnecessary perks. I think it would be great to have an ability that for let's say 50,000 gold you can reset your perks.
2. Oblivion styled hot-keys: I do like the Skyrim hot-keys, but it gets tedious to constantly stop gameplay to switch to something else. If I were Bethesda, i would make the up, left, and right D-pad controls hot-keys for 3 main things you would switch to immediately in battle; and the bottom button for the D-pad would be the usual shortcut system as we have now.
3. Make Dragon Shouts more powerful: Seeing as how I play the game on master, no matter what shout I use (all 3 words) it seems to barely damage enemies other than skeletons or weak minions. It wold be an awesome addition of players could train their shouts like skills, or you can add more words (up to 5 words for example).
4. Crossbows: 'nuff said.
5. Armour and weapons better than Daedric: hopefully this will happen with the release of new content. No need to explain this one.
6. More skill points: Especially with the rumored addition of a few more skill trees the addition of more siill points is almost a necessity.
7. Fletching: After all the time I've put into this game I have come across a very limited amount of Daedric arrows. So i think it'd be fair if you could make your own arrows. For example, at 100 fletching you can use one daedra heart, arrow shafts, and feathers to make daedric arrows. Let's say 1 daedra heart= 10 daedric arrows (and maybe bolts too with my crossbow idea :P).
8. More purpose for alchemy: There is no real point for putting any points in this skill. I think alchemy would be much more polular if it included things like potion doses and some major combat potions- for example, at 90 alchemy you can make a potion called overload. Your health is halved and all combat stats are boosted by 20-30%. This would add a lot more flavor and diversity to combat.

These are just a few of my ideas that I wanted to put out there for you all. I'd really appreciate feedback on my ideas and feel free to post on this thread any DLC ideas you have.

Thanks for reading :)

Howard couldn't yet share plans for DLC, but he says it will be focused on "ways to make the game better, not just have more, because the game is so big. So we're going through ideas right now, and processing everything people are doing in the game, and trying to think of ways that we can improve it." There will be multiple releases (as with Bethesda's past games), but Howard says they "don't have a timetable. They won't be quick, and they'll have a lot of meat on them."

So, improving existing features rather than adding to them.
