Unofficial "Will My PC Run Skyrim" Thread #59 w hard

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 2:51 am

Quick Question,

System Specs:

-AMD Athlon II X4 640 ~3.0GHz
-ATI Radeon HD 5570(plan to upgrade to XFX Double D Radeon HD 6870)
-4 GB of RAM(Upgrading to 8GB G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-pin DDR3 1600 >> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231428 )
-GIGABYTE M68MT-S2P motherboard >> http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3922#sp

With my current set up, I don't have any noticeable drops in cities - I play on Medium/High settings(Radial Blur set to Low) with Actor fade distance turned up to 7 and Object fade around 4 and average 30-50 fps(some dungeons push it to around 20-25 when there is a lot on screen).

I was wondering about how badly I can expect frames to drop in cities(with my upgraded GPU/RAM) based on what you guys said earlier.

Thanks in advanced!

Also, sorry if this isn't the correct thread for this.

Edit: I meant to state that I'd like to play on Ultra(maybe with a few things turned down a bit) at 1366x768 or 1600x900(depending on how bad frame lag is)

You should be able to play on a high/ultra mix at 1600x900 comfortably. The CPU is all that will hold you back from Ultra/max - you need a Phenom II x4, preferably @4Ghz, minimum to play near max.

Make sure your PSU can handle that GPU upgrade...it would be a significant jump in power consumption.

Yeah, I've taken that into full consideration, I have a Corsair CX500 12v v2.3 I'm going to purchase with it.

Processor: AMD Bulldozer FX-8120 3.1ghz eight-core AM3+
RAM: 8gb (2x4gb) 240-pin DDR3 1600mhz
Video: nVidia GeForce GTX460 1gb DDR5

What would it be able to run skyrim at? I'm considering buying it.

Corsair's CX models are lower quality, hence the lower price. The last thing you want to go cheap on in your gaming computer is the PSU. At the cheapest you could probably get away with this 550w unit:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207013

But ideally you should bite the extra $25 and just get the TX 650:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139020

Believe me, it's much worth it to spend an extra $25 now than risk PSU failure. The lower the quality, the higher the risk of eventual failure after several months of gaming. It also means a higher chance of it damaging other components as it fails, usually the video card.

That'll play Skyrim fine, but the 8-core CPU is wasteful. Anything over four cores really doesn't help with gaming. If you're buying premade (I would always recommend building instead), you should be able to find a second-gen i5 system with comparable graphics for around the same price. Or just spend less and get one with an AMD quad-core.

It would be smarter to replace the FX-8120 with an FX-4170 and spend the cash saved on a more expensive video card, such as the 560 Ti you just mentioned.

For the 560 Ti, make sure to use a reliable ~650-watt PSU. Corsair's TX 650 and anything from SeaSonic or XFX are great options.

I've consulted several pros and they've all recommended the cx500

I've consulted several pros and they've all recommended the cx500
"Pro" is a very subjective term, but there are many I could refer you to from whom I derive my PSU guidelines. Suffice it to say, low-quality or underpowered PSU failure is the most common cause of need for repair and my suggestions are based on keeping you from adding to that.

The Corsair CX models are around the same quality as OCZ, which isn't bad ("lower" as in lower than those I recommend), but it's very much worth the money to just spend a little more up front and get something you won't have to worry about. The difference is told in the manufacturer's warranty: with the TX, AX, and HX models, Corsair gives a 5-year warranty. For the CX models, they're only willing to give you 3. The problem is that when the PSU fails, there's a strong chance it will damage other components along with it, and the risk of this is greater the lower the quality of the unit. The warranty won't cover any damaged components.

Most importantly, it's wisest to overshoot wattage needs by 30% to compensate for wear over time, heat, and to ease the stress on the PSU itself, thereby extending its life. For a card that the manufacturer recommends 500 watts, that would make 650.

Hope that makes sense. You can hear a lot of different ideas of what will be "fine" for what video card, but really it's a roll of the dice every time you build with a cheap PSU.

I'm not looking for fanciness, just looking for about the same graphics as the console has.

lenovo IdeaPad Z570 (10249BU) Notebook Intel Core i5 2410M(2.30GHz) 15.6" 4GB Memory DDR3 1333 500GB HDD 5400rpm DVD±R/RW NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M (1gig v ram)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834246156

I installed 8 gigs of Memory into it btw.

I noticed there is a pretty good sale going on right now you might want to look into:

http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/load_configuration.do?destination=review&config_id=7248186 with1920x1080 display, i7-3610QM, http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-650M.71887.0.html, 8GB RAM, 750GB 7200RPm HDD with Hybrid SSD cache for $899 (you have to enter coupon code NBG5247)

This laptop should handle about any game at 1080p just fine.

Which mods in particular?

And what resolution? and what is your total budget?

I pointed out a laptop on sale http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1369386-unofficial-will-my-pc-run-skyrim-thread-59-w-hardware-guide/page__view__findpost__p__20958682 that should run Skyrim very well at 1080p with most mods.

It would, but the CPU would limit your fps. AMD's 8-core CPUs are no better for gaming than their $110 quad-cores. For only $20 more, you can get this cpu/mobo combo instead:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157271

The 2500k significantly beats out the FX-8120 in gaming performance, giving your system much longer life without the need to upgrade for newer games.

What is your budget and do you want to be able to run the game at 1920x1080? Does it matter to you if you are playing at lower resolution 1600x900, 1366x768?

Most of the mods in your list don't really impact frame rate.

The Voidcraft Optic Nature Pack includes a few that might

Lush Grass 1.4.1 - by OpticShooter

Lush Trees 1.3 - by OpticShooter

Kerplunk 1.0 - by OpticShooter

Vibrant Aurora 1.1 - by OpticShooter

Enhanced Distance Terrain 1.4 HD - by OpticShooter

Alternate Sun Glare 1.1 Hi-Res - by Isoku

Hybrids HD Plants + Herbs v4 - by MysticHybrid

I haven't used these, other than Vurt's Flora Overhaul, so I'm not sure exactly what kind of impact they would have on framerate. However, the laptop on sale for $899 I posted above should run Skyrim with all of the other mods on your list at 1080p at ultra or perhaps ultra using FXAA instead of MSAA.

Perhaps someone else can comment on the graphics mods you listed, but setting those aside, there are plenty of laptops around with 1080p display, quad core Sandy/Ivy Bridge CPU, 6-8GB RAM and a GPU that can run most games at 1080p (For example, AMD 5830m, 5850m, 6770m, 7690m, 7730m, 7750m / Nvidia 550m, 445m, 555m, 640m, 460m, 560m, 650m, or better)
