I didnt want to mention this, becuase it may give away some things. But Hicks, were you aware KNS is an Utsuge game ?
I wasnt until it was too late... And if anyone is curious about the game, I feel they should know before trying it.
I did mention that it will depress you, you said you liked the depressing ones!

Derp, got my acronyms all screwy.

Have you played KNS ? If so I could expand on why this was more depressing than I expected.

It's not so much know a specific order as it is avoid certain routes and not play one or two until doing all the other ones. There's a reason there's a 300 hour gameplay guide for Clannad.

Erm, there's an english patch for it, all you have to do is buy the Original or Voice edition (the memorial edition isn't supported by the patch yet)

Edit: memorial, not millennium
300 hours, [censored] thats a long VN.

Still I doubt I will get it anytime soon, you mentioned having to import from Japan to get yours.

Loved the series for Kanon, has anyone here tried the VN?

Also anologue, I wouldn't say it's depressing. More shocking, when you read the short historical background to it, then it makes more sense. I guess anologue comes across more as a social commentary, consistent with Don't Take it Personally and to a lesser extent Digital.

All aboard the good ship ???

That and the motivation for me to start learning Korean.

Might have posted this before but it's worth a look for some smaller VN's based on the same engine as used in Katawa Shoujo http://games.renpy.org/

Havent seen the anime, and cant find the VN. Also its supposed to be one of the first VNs, intending on making you cry, so im not in a rush to find it.
I may get anolouge eventually.

Im currently looking for a "drama CD" released after KnS, you would think they could have included it with the english verion, considering it came out after it, but nope.
Its the same story but tweaked, and I prefer it to the game. Having trouble finding the damn thing though, hell I would even settle for a Japanese version, I just need CD 3.

There are ones that arent Japanese, like Katawa shoujo. But it still has the anime artstyle.

I dont really care about anime, only watched some and didnt care much for them. But I like VNs. What bothers you about anime ?

Mostly the art style and the terrible voice acting (crappy if dubbed, annoying if subtitled).

Whats wrong with the art style ? If its the hair and eyes, I can understand, some VNs have stupid colours/looks, others are more realistic, when it comes to that stuff.

Some games dont have voice acting, others have an option to turn them off. I havent played many VNs, but I havent seen any that are dubbed.

I'm probably the only one...

I doubt it. You can turn the voices off though, and the art style isn't always the same. http://i.imgur.com/EWWqb.jpg

VNDB includes a list of upcomming visual novels. You then take the japanese name, search youtube (or NicoNico) for the promotional video. Then you head to the developer site (somemtimes the VN article will have a website link, otherwise you'll have to find it from the developer website which'll definitely be linked through the developer page on VNDB) and usually there will be links for more information and character summaries. Of course it's all in Japanese so you'll need to make use of a translator if not fluent.

I used VNDB, cant find any info about it, one other site had an interview where they said they announced it. But overall I cant find a damn thing.

Looks like I will have to look through google using the japanese name. Boy this will be fun.

Well google translate is making this weird, but googling the japanese name gives much better resuts. Thanks for that, I just googgled the romanji name (I think its called romanji)

VNDB generally has sparse information until a couple of weeks after a release. You just use it to get the name and developer info mostly until then. Eventually you'll find a developer or two who you like and then you'll get info from their website directly.

When googling, usually you'll get the best results by using the japanese name and the name of the developer. That should give you results for pages on the developer's website related to the game, or the game's official website. You'll also probably find the promotional video, though you may need a Niconico account as a lot of it will be on there (think of it a the Japanese youtube).

Just note, while promotional videos can be very useful in seeing what a visual novel may look like and get some basic information on the premise, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBGWD-Ef8T4.

I'll just say that the game for that visual novel shares almost nothing in common with that promotional video, not even the art style.

Damn, I would think the art would be the same.

Kara no Shoujo 2. Issue is they had a "true" ending, but later released some CDs, that tweaked the story and resulted in a different ending. Both pics seem legit, but they are showing completely different scenario's.

A visual novel is like a cross between a video game and a book. The majority are pretty much an interactive book more than anything else, but a few incorporate more gameplay elements.

If your interested, you can download katawa shoujo for free, from the devs website.
You can get Narcissu too, but it has no choices.

Well I found out what I wanted too. KnS2 does not exist to me, they chose the ending that I hated. No way in hell, [censored] canon, im sticking to my imaginary version that dosent make me feel depressed as [censored]. So many issues with that choice.

How do I get things off Amazon jp ? Do I need a seperate account or will my normal amazon one work ?
How do I handle importing ?

Also could may laptop play a CD, despite it being from Japan ? I know consoles have issues with that for some reason.

It'd depend on if it has region locking wouldn't it?

I've been able to use UK and US cd/dvd's despite them being two different regions. Might just be my drive, either that or region locking isn't quite so prevelant with pc games?

In theory you might be able to get a second external disc drive and change it's region if it does prove to be a problem. I had a R2 and a R1 drive on a desktop but that was for films.
