Was Brink a disappointment?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 6:32 pm

For me the game was a major disappointment for the first six hours but after that i got into my groove and now i enjoy playing it.
But the things that really bother me about Brink are:
1: Campaign is WAY too short (i'm talking about the whole thing security and resistance together)
2: Each mission is too short and has too much for engineers to do and WAY too little for operatives to do!
3: Customization, Were? well thats a little drastic but there really isn't as much as i expected from brink! (i was hoping that you could at least change a base color and trim of your clothing, but no there are around ten presets to choose from for each article of clothing. Lame)
4: The main menu! please improve! it could be a lot nicer
5: More challenges please, this ones not a big deal but i feel that their were not enough and the quality of them was kinda disappointing (especially "Parkour This")
6: The Game Needs More Content (i really hope SD works their tails of trying to get some Free! high quality DLC out soon, the game really needs it)
To me the game didn't seem finished but i hope to see more game content available in the future!
7: WTF are my friendly bots doing as i try to complete the main objectives, well they must be having a tea party, oh that sounds delightful. It's not if you wan't anything done you have to do it! (i understand that SD didn't want you to just sit around while your team mates did all the work but the could at least get your friendly bots to support you. The enemy bots work extremely well as a team!)
8: i think that they should at leas tell you some post game details after missions i.e. how many kills you dealt, how many times you died, who you killed the most, who killed you the most, etc. (i know that SD didn't want the game to be about these things but not including them makes the game feel like its not complete)
9: This game has NO Story, its depressing because thats usually my favorite part. The main campaign has no plot and doesn't really make sense. Go here do something (what was i doing? I seriously just played the game and i couldn't tell you wtf i was doing during the missions), now go there and do that. it's not memorable!
FYI i haven't played with other people because i don't have Xbox live so i can't complain about lag or anything. But the game didn't seem finished!
How do you feel about Brink?, comment please! :), i'll give you a :turtle:!

Worst issue for me is the ATI card fps hitches and low performance, other than that, it looks like a game I'd play for awhile.

I personally love it. It requires a type of player though. You need TF2 players, you have to work together and its not quite as cathartic as other games. The reward is in the team work. That said, the parkour is great. Slide tackle to a shotgun blast in the head is priceless

Just played for a couple of hours on Normal mode on the PS3.

I feel that the game could use some AI tweaking (for teammates, at least) and maybe some patching or DLC.

4 things that needs tweaking:

1) The AI of your teammates is somewhat..... moronic sometimes and the opponent is like "ambush!" and relentless I'm having trouble completing just one story mission because many of my AI teammates sometimes charge into rooms full of enemies and die and then all need revival in the first few minutes, maybe even seconds, of a mission, lol. :teehee:

2) You level up waaaay too fast. I've only played like for 2 hours and I am already on Level 4. I mean, it is very, very easy to get XP (even without going through the tutorials to get that free 1000XP)---the game gives you XP even when you FAIL or QUIT a challenge or mission, lol! That's too, too nice, SD. :D

3) More customization (in terms of appearance). Seriously, it felt somewhat limited with the preset color-combos and stuff. I was expecting just a bit more (especially since
they sacrificed female characters for the "huge amount" of customization, lol).

4) Sometimes the Melee doesn't feel like (so far from what little I've played) they are connecting. However, I only just started playing, so maybe I have to "aim" at the enemies' heads
better or something.

Not really a disappointment for me (so far), but I only just started. I just feel if the AI is improved, I think this game could be more....balanced?
Besides those above complaints, the game feels like an enjoyable experience. ^_^

Brink is a great concept and it was worth the buy because co-oping with friends is fun, but I have a few gripes that annoy me:

1. Campaign is way too short, even considering each faction has it's own story.

2. TOO MUCH focus on objectives. What happened to good old "deathmatch" mode? They could have kept teams, but no one wants to hack or protect areas all the time. Sometimes we just want to shoot each other up.

3. Not enough customization options. The back of the box says there's nearly unlimited combinations of settings to make unique characters. Not really. They got some nice gear for our characters to use, but I often see nearly identical looking characters. They should have let us choose individual colors for each piece of clothing (out of a choice of dozens of colors) instead of about 12 pre-selected colors. That would have really bumped the combination count up a bit.

4. I was expecting a sandbox game where we all explored a gigantic map of The Ark and we could select objectives from that, hook up with other members of our selected faction and achieve them that way. Instead, we got several small "arenas" that we enter like normal multiplayer games. Boring. @Gamer and Official Xbox Magazines lied to us. or they were given wrong information.

5. This must be some kind of bug, but when I enter a match, my friends have told me my character looks a certain way, when I know for a fact I didn't use the parts they're telling me I'm wearing. It's like our custom characters don't load properly, or the game decides not to load our characters and instead loads a randomly generated one. Or I was set to a Heavy character when I selected Medium. Or I have the wrong gun selected as my preferred weapon. Then what's the point of making a character? This needs to be fixed.

6. Tattoos and scars should be removable if we want to get rid of them. I know realistically we'd have to go to extreme means to get rid of them (like surgery), but this is a game and we should be allowed to remove those as part of our ability to customize our characters any way we want, any time we want.

7. The AI is inconsistent. Sometimes, ally AI characters are too stupid to achieve objectives, all they do is shoot. They don't help. Other times, the enemy AI characters are too smart and they like to set up several turrets to guard something they may be messing with, like opening a safe or hacking a terminal, so me and my team die off as soon as we get to them. Those turrets take forever to kill, but they shread me like tissue paper. The AI needs some re-balancing.

The only thing I dont like about brink was the friendly AI. It's quite [censored] to say the least. They seriously need to unscrew the AI so all bots behave the same.

My only real disappointment in the game is the friendly bots incompetence. Many missions I found myself having to switch to the required class because the bots would just stand around the objective, even if they were the required class. I am sure this can be improved with a little work and a patch.

Other than that I am content with my game.

As someone who is not a fan of shooters, but put 1500+ hours into MAG i have to say that i love BRINK to this point. The teamwork needed, and the custimazation is awesome when coming from a game that had none. Love the fact there are no OHK, and you have to bleedout enemies you have incapaciated so they are revived LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!

I have tried COD, MoH,even SOCOM4, and didnt have much fun with them. Cant wait for PSN to get back up and get in the real meat of the game.

^I agree with the both of you. This is my hugest obstacle.

I may need to go to Easy mode at this point (and pray the enemy gets as herpy-derp as my teammates!), lol!

Honestly, love the game. Granted it doesn't seem like there's as many customization options as we were told but meh, I can still customize and thats all I care about when it comes to that. As for the AIs I don't really have a problem with them, I get revived when I need to be, I get support when I need it, and at the end of the mission the job gets done. (Please note, not bragging, just stating my excperiences.)

Well honestly if psn was up i would be fine, but since im stuck redoing missions with the oh-so unreliable AI after a short lived cutscene im a bit pissed. But i really like the game.

Oh, my AI sometimes can be reliable, at least in the beginning. (The Medic AI will revive me---but only if I'm close enough. Otherwise, they are too far away or
died instead reviving people, lol!)
Then, their brains sometimes melt and then they are rushing into rooms filled with enemies instead of taking cover, lol!

^^ This. No advertisemant team should use adjective phrases like "seemingly infinite" or "truly unique" when describing a customization system that is so severely stunted. When you have more hair cuts than you do actual outfits you know you're doing something wrong. People would rather have three times as many outfits than show off their numerous flamboyant hairstyles. And is it just me or is the whole point of the customization system compromised when you join co-op campaign? It seems like it replaced your character with one of the default looking ones (as least when you're not the host). My friend joined me and none of his customizations appeared for me, but they did for him (and he couldn't see my customized character either). Rather, he (who made a far white character) became a medium build black character wearing a uniform he hadn't unlocked. What the hell is the point of customizing if no one can see it anyway?!

I agree, that can be frustrating, but I usually go and capture a command post/take out the enemy team and they kick right back into gear. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it doesn't happen, cause I notice it at times, but I usually do what I said previously and its like the reset or something. lol

Ive only played offline so far so my judgement might change when i eventually play online but i thought overall brink was a dissappointment.
my main problems with the game were:

1) The SMART movement is great but feels very clunky for it to be called "smooth movement".
2) Not that many maps, and they seem to blend in together.
3) The day one patch didnt fix the graphics issues on the 360, its still blurry.
4) Certain guns seem to be underpowered/ not balanceds, like the dragunav. the dragunav has to much recoil for doin so little damage, the barret comes off much better.
5) DUMB AI on offense. i mean really? the medics run into rooms full of enemies without even shooting them just to revive somebody. the operatives dont even do the hacking objectives, they spend all their time getting the control points (which causes me to have to play as an operative). Litterally the only thing the bots are good for are killing and buffing, everything else they svck at.

even tho im dissappointed in brink, its still alot of fun and i cant wait to try to play online (even tho ive heard theres alot of lag issues on 360).

Well I didn't play with any friends who could say what my guy looked like for sure, but I saw myself many times in the cut-scenes and everything was accurate on MP Freeplay for XBOX. Maybe it is a little glitch that will be worked out once they become aware of it.

8: No.

As someone who spent a lot of time reading up about the game the way it came out was basically what I expected honestly as did my friends. We knew what we were getting, we weren't aware the online would be unplayable but well here we are. It wasn't a disappointment for me or my friends but we weren't expecting the world like so many people around the web were.

The only dissapointment I had was the friendly AI (sure, it buffs and assists a bit, but it was majorly overhyped at PAX), and that I have an ATI card so the game
ll hitch every so often.

The only problems I have with Brink are the bots, which are good, but they hyped them WAAAAY to much, and that fact objectives have a bias towards Engineers. Otherwise Brink is amazing :D

At first the game kinda svcks because you're not used to it. But of course once you get past that and the huge amounts of lag it's a great game. It needs some other games types though. I like objective type games like TF2 but I got tired of it because it was the same thing for that map. If they added other types of objectives like 1/2-CTF type games, blow stock piles up, etc. or just some deathmatch would be nice. I am sick and tired of COD but they did some things very right like the game types.

I think if they want to make it last they need to make different game types. It would not only appeal to more players, but give it longevity if people are bored of objective only based games.

This. The only games I've played with better customization were City of Heroes/Villains, Champions Online, and APB.

Still, I have to admit I expected a lot more from the way they hyped the customization.

Ok i got a couple of problems with this game:

1. The campaign is waaaaayyyyy to short. And the fact that they even have a campaign is a problem. I was all hyped up for a sandbox game since that is what Bethesda does. I had in mind that this was gunna be like Fallout 3 but with parkour and guns. With all the push backs for the release date i thought they were making it better for that reason.

2. I do parkour myself and have been waiting for this game more for that than anything else. I dont have many complaints but one is how high we're allowed to jump. We barely get any lift from our jumps making alot of obstacles unreachable that really should be.

3. Wtf is up with our AI teammates? They just walk around shooting like a bunch of 10 year olds playing call of duty. They really need to be able to help you out more as a team because with the way they are now, it's just taking longer cause of the constant deaths you get from them not helping you.

4. I dont have much of a problem with customization except for the color choices (which are almost non-existent) and the clothing that seems impossible to unlock. I think it should change to more clothing and a point system for things to buy (kinda like Black Ops).

5. I really hope that they come out with good DLC because if they do it could save this game for them. Especially if they can put a free roam in so people can just hang out with they're friends on the Ark and have fun doing whatever they want (for example, Red Dead Redemption MP). I think that would really help me with having fun with this game.

6. And one last thing is we need more game modes. The objectives are fun but like multiple people have said we also just like to shoot the crap out of eachother sometimes. Maybe come out with FFA, TDM, CTF and other game modes along those lines.

This game has a lot of potential if SD and Bethesda put a little more into it with what the community is saying. Hopefully they'll listen.

 You do NOT try offer suggestions to a game by referencing CoD on these forums.

Besides, many people are under the impression that CoD ripped that off from MAG.
