Wasteland 2 is the direct sequel to the first ever post-apocalyptic computer RPG. The original Wasteland was the inspiration for the FALLOUT series of games, and the first RPG to allow players to split parties for tactical considerations, to face players with moral choices, and to make them deal with the consequences of their actions. It was the first to provide far more than the one-key-for-one-lock style of puzzle solving. It was groundbreaking, which is why IGN named it one of the top 25 PC games of all time, Computer Gaming World named it the Adventure Game of the year in 1988, and it was short-listed for inclusion in the Smithsonian Institution’s current “Art of the Computer Game” exhibition.

$15 gets you get the game when it's done. It is now also possible to donate to the project http://wasteland.inxile-entertainment.com/pledge.php.

Because the project has reached 2.1 million dollars, Obsidian's Chris Avellone (Fallout 2, Fallout New Vegas, Planescape: Torment, KOTOR 2) has joined the project to help with design and writing.

You'd make a pool for the last 5 days?

Don't say you'd be forwarding it here in hopes of gold and glory.

Anyway, Brother None is a moderator at Wasteland 2 forums and an admin at NMA, so you could ask him about it - he pulled off the NMA pool (as far as I know) so he knows how it works.

I think if we'd came up with the pool from the start we'd have raised around $1000, but definitely not enough for a statue. There just aren't enough people here.

On NMA or the Codex it's much easier because everyone loves these type of games. It's like going on the ES section of this forum and asking people to pledge just $10 for a future ES game. You'd easily make half a million in a week.

I don't know if we'd have made that. Most people who are pledging are probably doing it because it gets them the game when it's done. With a donation pool you wouldn't get any individual rewards.

Depends how many people are in the pool. The statue pledge gives 30 digital copies of the game, an average of $166/person. I'd assume there are a lot more than 30, so I wonder who gets to have the 30 copies.

Nah, there are about 10 of us on the Kickstarter fund that want a little inside joke to make an appearance as a random encounter. We're kicking around the idea of a pool to get $1000 in before the thing ends. But, we're all up in the air and we still need two more people.

Nothing spectacularly new, but a good read nonetheless.

Choice quote:
There are so many elements of Wasteland that worked quite well and we plan to build upon that foundation rather than start over from scratch. Those elements are the sandbox type world, dark humor, party based combat, tactics in battle and a skill based system. However, combat isn’t going to consist of scrolling text so clearly we need to up the tactics part of the game.
And we don’t want the tactics SO deep that you feel disconnected from the world by being in long battles all the time. The last thing we want is someone groaning every time combat pops up. The game is going to take place shortly after Wasteland 1 ends. And by the way for everyone who remembers little Bobby – he is pissed off having been shot by Rangers and left for dead.

Paypal was used for The Codex and it raised a bit of an issue. I contributed but didn't completely pay attention as to what the issue was or how it got solved. I really don't think there are more than a handful of us at this board who even care though I would laugh my dang ass off to see "Bethesda" in Wasteland 2. Oh wait. I don't mean laugh. I mean:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2/posts Good stuff. As usual.

A short wrapup, borrowed from BN's post at WL2 forums:
Update confirms: 4 ranger party, 3 followers. Top-down exploration with isometric town map and combat envisioned. Turn-based combat mostly taking inspiration from Jagged Alliance and the like. Story set right after Wasteland, starts you out as Ranger recruits playing in the area of the first game, later has you going into California to establish a new base.

No, you get a choice between the shirt or the poster and coin. I'm torn right now, the poster is awesome and I like T-shirts.

Damn, I read it wrong. I'll take the shirt. Can never pass up a free t-shirt.

I tried to play Wasteland 1 yesterday...and I failed. That's 2 games on my list now: Dwarf Fortress and Wasteland.

That does not affect my pledge of course.

Ha! Did you not get it to run, or did you just not like the gameplay? It is a bit of a shock going back...it's an old game. :)

Gameplay. I am disappointed with myself. I can play Daggerfall with ease (not the oldest game I've played, but the hardest in comparison to others to get the ball going).

Same. Wasteland's graphics and gameplay are just below that line of what I can still enjoy, unfortunately.

I actually don't mind the graphics that much, but it's just that the way you go about talking to people, moving about etc isn't fun. And the combat is very very basic and boring. I'd rather watch a LP of the game, to get an idea about the world, the lore and so forth.

Watching now. It's not a very long LP so I think I'll finish it by today. Thanks.

EDIT: Good voice too.
