So what exactly do hipsters do?

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 12:05 pm

But loafers only cost 10 bucks and last for years!

And atleast I don't wear idiotic skin jeans or leggings, boot cut jeans forever!
Also cheap shirts = shirts I wear (unless a nice shirt at hot topic or on Spreadshirt catches my eye (The Brony shirt at Hot Topic)) so usually every shirt I have is a graphic tee or tie dye.

Blame my hat obsession on TF2, and I only wear the fake glasses as a joke.

The fake glasses thing had me worried. Also the only man who can carry off wearing skinny jeans is Bruce dikeinson. Glad to hear you don't bother.

You don't have a moustache by any chance do you?

That's what all hipsters think though. In everyone's eyes, you're just another hipster!

No, because I'm not a hipster. Hipsters wear terrible clothes and listen to terrible music just because they know that they are terrible and will get them attention. As far as my tastes go, you wouldn't know that I'm a "nonconformist" because I like lots of mainstream stuff along with niche stuff. Honestly, most obscure stuff is obscure for a good reason, but there are also lots of hidden jewels that you'll never find if you don't keep an open mind.

People think that conformism is liking good stuff and nonconformism is liking bad stuff. Really, though, conformism is pretending to like what everybody likes, anticonformism (hipsterism) is pretending to like stuff that very few people actually like, and nonconformism is openly liking whatever you actually like. One makes sense, one is just silly, and one is incredibly annoying (because being incredibly annoying is the whole point). That's what I think, anyway.

I think the whole thing is rather interesting. Everybody knows that it's "cool" to bash popular stuff. But now there are hipsters, a growing subculture known for bashing popular stuff, who are extremely "uncool" to everyone but other hipsters. Thus, if you want to be "cool", you have to bash stuff just enough to be "cool" but not enough to be associated with hipsters. Our species is completely ridiculous. :teehee:

Edit: Fun fact: In the 50's, "hipster" was a slang term for someone who was, you know, hip. Exactly the opposite of its current meaning. Sort of.

Well I haven't really grown facial hair to the point where it doesn't look like crap when not shaved completely off, but I'm gonna try different styles of facial hair...
Starting with with a goatee and mustache (like Gordon Freeman!)

Also compared to almost every other kid in my school is either "super-duper hipster" compared to me or pretty much unknown to most people there.

I've been wearing plaid shirts since before they became cool (har har total hipster thing to say). Difference is I still wear them, unlike a hipster who would stop because being cool is so not cool.

Hipsters are what hold up my jeans :)

Great design is being able to communicate on the highest level, and that level is mainstream. Its something I hope i'll achieve in the future.
err.., call me a moron, but I thought that communicating to the mainsteam -the masses, was considered communicating at the lowest level, because you're dealing with the lowest common denominator of a given group.
The larger the group, the lower the common denominator is set at.

I think what you're describing are the use of universal iconographic representation of items, which when done well can reach a universal audience.

Like the nokia 3310. A design as recognizable as the old cathedral radio design, or lava lamp. :)

edit:
Plaid is cool again?!?!

Holy [censored]! Quick, to the bat cave where all my other hideous 70's garb is boxed away!!

I thought they were just people that hung around with musicians and artists but didn't have any discernible talent of their own?

I used to be with it, but then they changed what 'it' was. Now, what I'm with isn't it, and what's 'it' seems weird and scary. It'll happen to you too!

You kids seriously need to start thinking up some freshly original sub-cultures.

This is pretty shamefully for the generations of diggers, beatniks, greasers, hippies, punks, grungers, Goths and neo-punks that have come before you.

for;

In the beginning
Back in nineteen fifty five
Man didn't know 'bout a rock 'n' roll show
'N all that jive

Think outside of the box.

Let it all come full circle..

embrace rock 'n roll

/here endth thy sermon :grad:

I believe hipsters were the bastard spawn of artists and designers. A lot of artists and designers sadly fall into the hipster category because they have a rather..uhh..unique sense of fashion.

They also fuel themselves on coffee (theres a stigma with Starbucks and hipsters) and use macs because its appropriate to do so.

As a designer, I have coffee running into my bloodstream every 3 hours but so does anyone so that doesn't make me a hipster. I have 2 macs and I also have 2 PCs for gaming and mobility..

In regards for a hipsters disregard for mainstream -- i'm absolutely against that notion. The mainstream inspires me as it shows how things can have a global impact if they're smart, creative or catchy. Great design is being able to communicate on the highest level, and that level is mainstream. Its something I hope i'll achieve in the future.

You can't deny it, Miked. You can't deny your hipster heritage! BAWAHAHAHHA!

No, that would be off shore tech support..

Man I already love Rock n Roll!

And compared to everyone else at my school I am not a hipster...

How would one dress by your definition, to not be a hipster, but not look like an old person at the same time?
