So what exactly do hipsters do?

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 3:53 am

And why do people hate them so much?

I'm gathering information incase I decide to be a hipster for Halloween or just feel like goings about town making a mockery of the much hated "hipsters".

Also to determine if people who are accused of bein hipsters are acutaly hipsters.

At this point, it's just an internet punching bag.

my favourite anecdote about hipsters and hipster hate, was when i heard some one recall about seeing one hipster talk about how much he hated hipsters.

hipsters usually don't adopt that image, its usually a label some one else places on some one.

the way i define some one as a hipster is some one who tries to avoid labels or being part of predefined group of people with the purpose of seeming to be cool for being cutting edge or nonconformist.

Hipsters think they're different from society but end up following the norm with other hipsters.

Two girls I once knew, complained that everybody wore different clothes, which they hated, because it made their bizarre attire (a [censored] raincoat on one occasion) stand out less. One of them also wore enormous headphones that didn't work.

It's just daft.

I am the 2%. Oh wait, by going against your quote, I am then deemed a hipster. :ahhh:

I always thought of them as people who aren't comfortable with being normal, just like I often think that goths (or I guess emos now) have self-image issues. Hipsters aren't total weirdos though, just semi weirdos.

They want to go against what's normal by wearing scarfs, glasses without lenses, and collect vinyl records. They are also into indie bands, even if they don't like their music, because they are not popular.

They claim to be nonconformists, because they bash anything that's popular or "mainstream" and claim to love anything niche or obscure. However, hipsters have their own subculture that they stick to firmly, with a distinctive style of dress, slang, and beliefs, which sounds suspiciously like conformism to me. I call this anti-conformism, which is, somewhat ironically, just another form of conformism.

I'm a real non-conformist. I don't say that because I conform to a different subculture than most people; I say that because I don't conform to any subculture at all. If I like a song, film, book, or video game, then I like it regardless of how many other people like it.

From what I've gathered after extensive research, a hipster is any person, male or female, below the age of 40, who has political opinions that differ from yours, and wears clothing.

I'm scared now, I think I might be a hipster...

I wear loafers, fake glasses, cool hats, buttons, I plan to collect record when I get enough money.

Only I genuinely love the obscure, and only like indie bands because they're way better than any mainstream song made today (seriously, compared Hey Ocean! to whatever the "cool" mainstream pop artist is) and electronic music is just cool.

That's what all hipsters think though. In everyone's eyes, you're just another hipster!

EDIT: Hipster is a word that loses all meaning if you say it too often...

I believe hipsters were the bastard spawn of artists and designers. A lot of artists and designers sadly fall into the hipster category because they have a rather..uhh..unique sense of fashion.

They also fuel themselves on coffee (theres a stigma with Starbucks and hipsters) and use macs because its appropriate to do so.

As a designer, I have coffee running into my bloodstream every 3 hours but so does anyone so that doesn't make me a hipster. I have 2 macs and I also have 2 PCs for gaming and mobility..

In regards for a hipsters disregard for mainstream -- i'm absolutely against that notion. The mainstream inspires me as it shows how things can have a global impact if they're smart, creative or catchy. Great design is being able to communicate on the highest level, and that level is mainstream. Its something I hope i'll achieve in the future.

But loafers only cost 10 bucks and last for years!

And atleast I don't wear idiotic skin jeans or leggings, boot cut jeans forever!
Also cheap shirts = shirts I wear (unless a nice shirt at hot topic or on Spreadshirt catches my eye (The Brony shirt at Hot Topic)) so usually every shirt I have is a graphic tee or tie dye.

Blame my hat obsession on TF2, and I only wear the fake glasses as a joke.
