They claim to be nonconformists, because they bash anything that's popular or "mainstream" and claim to love anything niche or obscure. However, hipsters have their own subculture that they stick to firmly, with a distinctive style of dress, slang, and beliefs, which sounds suspiciously like conformism to me. I call this anti-conformism, which is, somewhat ironically, just another form of conformism.
I'm a real non-conformist. I don't say that because I conform to a different subculture than most people; I say that because I don't conform to any subculture at all. If I like a song, film, book, or video game, then I like it regardless of how many other people like it.
