What's so exciting about crossbows?

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 3:19 pm

It's basically the same as bow and arrow but with a bit more power. I don't see the excitement over it.
Are there any real advantages to using a crossbow?

it's not the bow, it's people trying to feel... more advlt like because it's from Morrowind, they think that because they say they love a game from 2002 or what ever, that they appear more educated and smarter, and of course more nostalgic, they think they gain respect, it's not the bow, it's the game.

i think the whole issue is that its one less weapon type in the game, and with that less options for roleplaying

Probably a faster projectile speed and flatter trajectory, making it easier to hit moving targets. Higher damage will make it the weapon of choice for anyone other than hit-and-run archers which need the faster firing bows.

My dunmer is a one shot, one kill sniper par excellence with the bow. Can't see any advantage whatsoever in a crossbow.

Are we talking real life or skyrim? In real life the bolts are better at armour piercing. In game I can't see it being anything more than a different visual to a bow. However, I would like still like them in game. Adds more variety to the weaponry.

is that really what you think? i mean, REALLY? :stare:

though it would be better as far as roleplaying, but as far as weapon types, no, see halberds and spears are weapon types... crossbow is really just a gun, and it would be treated like that and it would be basically FO3 mixed with skyrim some what... kidna, in a way...

I still think it's my theory though.

a gun? just because they use a trigger mechanism and shoot a projectile doesnt make them equals

crossbows fit in the TES universe just fine as seen in morrowind, but even in skyrim we have huge crossbows in the form of ballistas

guns however should stay far, far away from TES

How exactly would spears work? Would you be able to hold more than a couple spears at a time?
Are we talking about throwing spears or using a spear as a primary weapon like a sword?

People want it because it was removed. They are feeling nostalgic.

Literally that is all.

unless you plan on throwing them, one would do

if throwing, it would be silly if you'd be able to have more than a few of them at once

but then again we can carry wagonloads of stuff in our magical underwear in the game

Or maybe people just like using them? Again another comment of "if you do not agree with me you are stupid". It has nothing about being more educated and smarter, it's about people who like using it. For me, I like using them in Morrowind because it was like having a gun, instead of a bow all the time. It's about more choices for people who like to Role Play.

Also about the "one shot" kills, come on, it's a game mechanic, funny how Bormir was never One Shot Killed.

Another reason people want cross bows, is what is next in TES VI? Just swords and no axes or maces? Like why bother with axes and maces when most people use swords. Its about varitey.

thats true, i want it in the game, but i would probably still use my bow, people want more than what they have, its human nature, and no im not trying to contradict what i said in my last post

I would think that the crossbow will be a Dwemer invention, I expect them to introduce it like its the newest and coolest thing to happen in the world. And it'll be the talk amongst NPC's

Even better than throwing spears/javelins:

a PILUM.

Oooooooh, that would rock beyond words. Add some more Greco-Roman stuff beyond the Imperial arms & armor, and I'd wear that stuff exclusively like a Skyrim Centurion Legionnaire. :-)

In the real world, the crossbow was far easier to learn to use well than a bow, so that more projectile weapons could be brought to battles without too much hard core training. They also penetrated the ever-improving armors being used. They suffered from a slow rate of fire and lessened range, but offered greater accuracy at the closer ranges. In game? They just look damned cool, I doubt they will be much different from bows, if ever introduced.

You speak truth.

Though I did like using them too in Morrowind lol. But from what I remember they didn't have much of a difference from bows. It's pretty much just another flavor choice.
