What is the point in having multiple races when your choice

Post » Mon Jun 18, 2012 10:56 pm

If Bethesda said hey lets only put on race in the game, let them play as only Nords. HAHA the hardware serving this forum would have gone up in smoke. There are different races in the story and the story world. So if you could only be a Nord then you'd say "Hey, why would I want to be a Mage, a nord should be a warrior. Why is Mage a possible way to play".

Perhaps you've never played Dragon Age II.

While it is a far more linear game, you don't pick your race, you chose among three classes and then tailor those classes to what you want to play as.

That can be done in an open world environment such as TES.

Haven't read most of this topic, but coming from a Game Designer's point of view, it would make more sense that a race that is known for its magical ability would be better at being a mage. However, i also think that other, less magical races (such as Orcs, etc) should still be able to become as proficient a mage as, say, a Breton, BUT only after some hard work.

It also makes sense that a 'warrior' race, such as Redguards or Orcs would do more damage with melee as they are naturally stronger and better at fighting, but they should also be able to harness magicka better after training - but training a lot more than a Breton or High Elf would have to do.

As for the story, yes, a Khajiit shouldn't be able to join the Stormcloaks unless he can prove that he can be useful to the Stormcloaks. If a Khajiit can help defeat the Legion and help the Stormcloaks, i think they could make an exception to his race. A Nord wanting to join would probably be accepted straight away, or have a more easy time convincing them of his worth.

As it is, its not something that bothers me entirely. Once the CK comes out, i will be able to see what can be changed, but until then, its something i can live with. Although i agree Beth could have done more work on it, instead of treating all races the same after the start of the game. I can see why they did it (so that a person can play how he wants as the race he wants) but there should be some negative effects to choosing a race.

Very much agree. Especially as a game design student.

But end game power represents the time, effort, and practice you put into perfecting your craft, so yes, an Orc should be just as powerful a mage as a High Elf if the Orc put forth the same time, effort, and practice into perfecting his arcane talents.

That is exactly how it should work.
It's not so much 'end game' as it is 'any time playing the game'. I had no issue being a mage as a Khajiit, even as I started out, despite it not being the usual profession for the race. If I had to put time, effort, and practice into it, that would be great, but I didn't. Magic came just as naturally to my Khajiit as it would a High Elf. As a result, I didn't feel any different playing a Khajiit than I would as any other race.

That I didn't encounter any of the distrust usually given to Khajiit didn't help. Khajiit caravans aren't allowed inside cities, but they didn't so much as blink when I go through the door. They don't even bother to ask if I have any contraband or if I'm even part of the caravan.

Not to say attributes are the answer, but it doesn't help me feel like my character is a Khajiit when none of the racial predispositions or prejudices apply to any notable degree.

Seems to me that your choice of race is purely for vanity reasons.

I remember hearing rumours about race-specific armor but that turned out to be a big pile of nothing.

Your Character still looks different then others. The game should hold your hand all the time.

Hold your hand? How is making some things harder, like a Nord Mage, hand holding? Making something harder is the very antithesis of hand holding. Did you take an arrow to your knee before coming into this thread?

Making choices mean something is the exact opposite of hand holding. Meaningless choices are NOT choices at all. If there is no difference between two different things, they are the SAME thing.

Looking different, seriously? This is supposed to be an RPG, not dress up time. If all races are not meaninfully different, they are basically nothing but eyecandy. Eyecandy for the extremely rare times I'm in third person view.

Perks and Attributes would have been very nice.

Play an Orc, start with additional health and defense (armor). Pump some extra points into health and defense. Suit up in your Heavy Armor then add the perks that give a % boost to the Armor you have. My Armor rating just sky rocketed. While you could do the same for a Wood Elf it won't be, or shouldn't be, nearly as high as an Orc's.

I'd like to see something between Option A (vanilla Skyrim) and Option B (your Skyrim). It doesn't feel right that people are locked out of being amazing X, Y or Z simply because of race. It doesn't work that way IRL, either.

Right, I have said that I do not want to see 'X race can't be X job class,' because that is what is actually limiting.

You're not answering my concern.

Golf is a sport of white origin, played by mostly white people. Out of nowhere appears Woods and makes all of his competition appear relatively incompetent.

You're saying that the equivalent of a Woods should not be allowed to exist in TES. I'm saying: That's not a fun way to play, and it's not realistic, either.

A few racial traits are negligible. Night Eye and Claws for Kats hardly make an impression on the game. Underwater Breathing is also fairly negligible.

Bethesda could have done some really interesting things with the beast traits. You're right: it goes nowhere.

Go cry to Bethesda ^^ Or change it yourself. You saw the trailer, you had the chance to read reviews before buying the game. And i think Beth doesn't care for people who are just complaining that the races have no extra Questline. The races were ALWAYS eyecandy! They had no Questline in Oblivion, they had no Questline in Morrowind!

No it shouldn't.

But you're more than welcome to go back to playing D&D, while not ruining my TES with horrible ideas.

Hey guys, its Pete Hines!!!!

Well, he did claim ownership of the series.

Perhaps I mis-worded my message.

A Tiger Woods should happen. But it shouldn't be as easy as others. I shouldn't be able to pick up a Cat and make them the same level of Mage that a High Elf can be without having to do a lot of extra work. In Skyrim you're pretty much "The Chosen One," unfortunately they stacked too many "Chosen One" traits onto the player. Not only do you have the ability to do Shouts but you also have the ability to become anything you want. An Orc Mage who is at the same level of a High Elf Mage (without a lot of extra effort), while also gaining Shouts, is a mary sued character.

So... because it wasn't around in the past means it should never be considered for the future.

Makes sense.

Actually, Bethesda did mention they wanted to make the races feel more unique and not just be aesthetics. Your race choice was mostly going to add "flavor", and there were going to be a small amount of quests that were unavailable due to race... though as it is, we don't even get that. I have not gotten any of this "flavor" they mentioned, aside from very accassionally hearing guards say 'cat' or 'Khajiit' to me as I'm running by them. Other Khajiit don't even recognize me as one of their own. If there's supposed to be any "flavor" there, then they need to fire their cook.

I felt as an argonian that I got a lot of notice of my race, especially off my own brethren.
It's quite understandable that you gain less attention in a land full of humans as a human.
The more unique you are, the more you are noticed in a world like this.

That can be done in an open world environment such as TES.

But why? That's not the game they wanted to make. Their could be fairy's and hobbits. Donald Trump could be the Thane of Riften. So my argument is that this argument has no reason to exist.

I'm finished here.

Your response is to tell me to go cry? So, either love the game and every single aspect or GTFO? Seriously, the choices are boot-licking really devoted fan or go home?

At least their are differences in those choices, I'll give you that. Now how come you don't want any of that in your game? Nobody is asking for anything to be removed from this game, in fact, those you are lashing out at are asking for things to be added. Why is that so abhorrent to you?

As for the story, yes, a Khajiit shouldn't be able to join the Stormcloaks unless he can prove that he can be useful to the Stormcloaks.

I can't say what it was like for the other races since I, for the first time in TES history, have made just the one character AND still playing it, but my Khajiit did have to do a test to prove my worth.

So, you would prefer it if your Khajiit wasn't allowed into any of the cities? Or if the Stormcloaks tried to kill your Imperial on sight? That would make performing half the quests impossible.

Not until you choose a side, no.

Why change what works?

Why make any changes at all then?

Why are there differences at all between TES I, TES II, TES III, TES IV, and now TES V?

Why change what works? Because what works can be made better perhaps?

Call it how you need it. Fact is no one gave you the game and no one said you MUST play it. There is one thing to ask for stuff and one to complain about unimportant things. They added already a lot more things to the different races as they did in Oblivion. The races became a complete new look. So why should they stick more time into it instead of making important stuff. Making a game unplayable because of you play the "wrong" race is not a good feature.

Also you should be able to make ANY race to a class you want to play. No one want to be bound to an Elf to play a Mage. And no one want to be bound to an Orc to play a Warrior.

Why change what works? Because what works can be made better perhaps?

Or worser. Since you are new you seem not to be complaining about Oblivion or Morrowind. You just see the BAD things in Skyrim but not the NEW features they added.

race chocie should matter more, if im a khajiit then i shoudl have to buy my way into a town or sneak into it, if im an argonian other people should treat me like dirt (untill i bury them 6 feet under the dirt, that is). choice should matter, and, op's trolling aside, he brought up a failing point that could have been so much more

As Khajiit you also get a lot of notice from the other people.

I was thinking of making a khajiit sometime, maybe I'd get more notice in Whiterun while there.
The rarity of khajiit would make it very intriguing when I do encounter another one out on the road.
Hopefully like argonians, it'd bring up friendly conversation in some way.
