What unnecessary rules do you follow?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 7:28 pm

There are things that we all do during role playing that the game does not require... what are your personal rules?

Mine are:
  • Always find my horse after finishing a quest - before I fast travel.
  • Always eat breakfast after waking up - eat some food when the time is right.
  • Sleep at night, unless a night mission is called for.
  • If I finish a quest late at night, I look for an inn or town rather than fast traveling someplace. I then pay for the night.

Upgrade all my collectables to legendary status, when I don't use any of them. It's starting become a very expensive habit.

I don't wear helmets. Ever. Hoods are only acceptable if I'm playing a magic user.

Try to limit myself so that I wouldn't become overpowerful. I'd like to keep my characters as limited as the NPCs are, to feel more like being part of that world. It fails though. I always become the strongest. :(

I try to walk versus fast travel unless I've had a bad day at work. I wear only helmets that can properly show off my character's cool face design.

Those first rules you posted are quite good actually, I might start using them. Seems a bit silly to never sleep or eat. Also, I really like the inns in the game because they have an atmosphere that no other places seem to have

I have a few restrictions on my Cleric (Baldur's Gate style): No bladed weapons-- 1h maces only. I won't loot urns etc from tombs, only treasure chests. I only learn/cast Alteration and Restoration magic. In alchemy, if I create a poison I'll destroy it-- I won't sell or use it. I only make beneficial potions.

I use a similar system. I alss never take apotion unless my character would actually have time to drink one ( I would love drinking animations when you drank a potion myself like Blade of Darkness did back in the day) I tend to walk more than run. Mostly it boils down to acting like your character would if they were real.

I pretty almost much never fast travel myself unless my bloody horse has fled so far I can't find him. I just enjoy the role play of moving throgh the world and lets me enjoy the game more

- Never fast travel, carriages being the only exception.
- Do quests depending on the locations of each objective. If something is on the way to my next chosen destination, then I'll prioritize it.
- Whenever I'm in a safe area talking to people, I don't wear a helmet.
- Always sleep a decent amount of hours when a day has passed, only exceptions being situations that demand immediate action for story reasons.
- If a follower dies, he or she is dead.
- If that follower proved to be great help, or died while defending me successfully, I leave whatever weapon and armor he or she was using with the body as a sign of respect, no matter how valuable that weapon or armor was (not kidding here).
- If the follower proves to be exceptionally skilled and helpful, I have him or her join the Blades.
- If playing on an Xbox, I don't look at the achievement list, so whenever one pops up it's more of a surprise.

  • never fast travel. Ever. Not even carriages.
  • only use a long bow (upgraded gradually through smithing), iron arrows, and hide armor.
  • if I kill an animal, I must not let any of it go to waste.

Don't use the world map until you have role-played buying one.

Only use the local map for towns and only after role-playing buying one.

I always go to one of my houses before I end a game session. It's a tradition I've done since Morrowind.

01.) Never fast travel.
02.) Always cook food, eat and drink three times a day. Sitting down, with company, if possible.
03.) Find shelter for the night whenever possible, and always sleep 8 hours a night.
04.) Never kill any wildlife. Ride past wolves, tigers and bears whenever possible.
05.) Never kill NPCs unless they attack you first and leave you no choice. Ride past hostile road keeps without fighting (I'm the trespasser).
06.) Never steal, unless it's from an evil dead NPC.
07.) Never take anything with less than a 10-to-1 gold-to-weight ratio. It cuts out carrying unrealistic items (take bowls instead of steel armor).
08.) Always put the health of my horse (Healing Hands) and follower ahead of my own.
09.) Equip any follower I have with the best equipment I can provide them, including unique or magic items. They keep it all after being dismissed.
10.) Always take off clothes before sleeping in a bed, always wear regular clothes while spending a day in a civilized area.
11.) Never wear a helmet unless right before a fight, and remove immediately after. Always wear a hood when raining.
12.) Always try to keep a reasonable variety of food on hand (see #2).
13.) Always leave my horse in an area safe from random encounters, sheltered from weather, and inside a stable for equine company and food if possible.
14.) Only use smithing to improve signature weapons already found in the game, rather than create and enchant uber-powerful game-breakers.
15.) Always equip full-body fur clothing when in ice and snow conditions.
16.) Never take anything from the alters of benevolent deities, and always leave an offering.

There's probably others I'm not thinking of.

I do something similar, but just the ones I'm actually displaying in the house. I want Lydia to have something nice to look at.

After each quest, I will always head to anywhere where I can rest. And after waking up, I'd eat a few things then head off again. I'd rather do more than 2 quests continuously. Also as a thief character, I'd only pick up light and valuable items (mostly 100 gold up). I also used to follow a rule where I would change to town clothes, but since my character's now in Thieves Guild, I'd like people in town to feel some authority from me. "Dare mess with me? You're gonna have to answer to the Guild!" These are all of them so far..

1. I don't fast travel
2. I sleep during the night
3. I cross rivers by finding the bridge rather than swimming across
4. I don't change equipment during a fight

Uneccessary rules are fun :P

1. No fast travel except for carriages, and even then, only ever to cities I've already uncovered.
2. Eat or snack at least twice, but ideally three times a day.
3. Sleep every night when possible. If impossible, be sure to sleep extra when a bed becomes available.
4. Change into regular clothes whenever entering a city.
5. Never willingly lead a horse into danger.
6. After enduring a difficult quest or one that has taken many days to complete, take some time off to recuperate.

Certain characters have extra 'rules' to follow, but those are the 'universal' ones.
