What unnecessary rules do you follow?

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 12:07 am

In my latest character I started experimenting with only leveling up after I kill a dragon - makes that whole absorbing dragon souls thing seem a bit more impressive.

I only fast travel with a horse and only within the same hold. Just to justify myself buying a horse.

I find this hard to believe, but congrats if this is true. It`s certainly a great way to enjoy a game and be exercised. Id do this too if I had a treadmill.
Well if I want to play my ps3, I have to be on the treadmill, as it's connected to the samsung mounted on the wall in front of it. My wife basically put her foot down and said if I want to play a game, I have to workout as well so it's more productive. I was against it at first, and it was awkward getting use to it, but it's actually payed off. So Despite the way it seems like a lie, it's actually true. I now try using my treadmill to immerse myself in a game more, rather then finding it as a way to complain or distract me like I did at first.

That is pretty hard core.... :-)

Why no horses?

R
Can't use a horse if your on foot. And I don't feel like trotting on a treadmill to match the horse on the screen. lmao I think I'd fall on my [censored] after a session of that.

I really really really wish I could do that. But I would get so tired. Haha.
That was my wifes idea, I'd play less on my games if I was forced to use our treadmill while playing. I'm only allowed to stay on the console as long as I can stay on the treadmill. So it has it's perks, I will say, it's almost impossible to have day long gaming sessions now. I hve to take more frequent breaks then I use to when I sat in my lazy boy recliner. One thing to point out though, the split fish controller is hard to get use too, and unfortunately, it takes batteries. It also has a built in motion system to look around, much like a wii controller, so I have to turn that off. Used it in a COD, takes awhile to get use too, but it does work semi-acurately.

When I get a digital camera with our return, I'll take a pic and post it up. =D

You have a very interesting wife. The good thing is eventually you`ll probabaly get so fit you`ll stay on it all day!

1. Never intentionally hurt foxes

I never hurt foxes either. In fact I never even thought about it. But I tend not to hurt anything that doesn`t attack me.

I did once kill a chicken for the meat... To be honest if starvation existed in this game I`d probably kill a lot of chicken and deer.

On my thief character I would drop any lockpicks I acquired over 10, and would not loot them either, so I would start every heist or dungeon with only 10 to use, making lockpicking things an actual challenge with a penalty for failure.

For me? I'm a Breton Rogue with an alignment of Neutral Chaotic. I have some roleplaying rules for only this character and in general.
  • Won't randomly kill people, including bandits and Forsworn, unless I have to infiltrate them for a quest
  • Sticks to an Anti-Empire, Neutral Chaotic Alignment
  • Only drink potions in combat if you're far from the battle
  • Pledges allegiance to the Thieves Guild
  • Eats at least once a week -- If in a city, 2-3 times a day
  • Protect the Shrines of Talos
  • Don't wear hoods when inside towns, unless you're doing something illegal
  • I only steal from the rich and the merchants, never from the poor or middle classed
  • Try to sleep at night. If there's no bed, wait until daybreak and hurry home to a city
  • No fast travel if the destination is close or somewhat close
  • When the destination isn't close and not far enough to fast travel, use a horse.

- Never fast travel, carriages being the only exception.
- Do quests depending on the locations of each objective. If something is on the way to my next chosen destination, then I'll prioritize it.
- Whenever I'm in a safe area talking to people, I don't wear a helmet.
- Always sleep a decent amount of hours when a day has passed, only exceptions being situations that demand immediate action for story reasons.
- If a follower dies, he or she is dead.
- If that follower proved to be great help, or died while defending me successfully, I leave whatever weapon and armor he or she was using with the body as a sign of respect, no matter how valuable that weapon or armor was (not kidding here).
- If the follower proves to be exceptionally skilled and helpful, I have him or her join the Blades.
- If playing on an Xbox, I don't look at the achievement list, so whenever one pops up it's more of a surprise.

there's an acheivment list? I only look at the board that shows which games you've done 100% of.

1. Dead is dead.
2. No inventory pause (to chug pots/ other cheapness / weapon switches are allowed) in combat.
3. No followers
4. Inventory weight must stay below 160.
5. No abusing the smith/enchant/alchemy tree (personal view! not an attack on anyones style!) I use arcame smith.
6. No reloading, must live with consequences of actions.
I follow all of those except 4 and 5, because in the first case I'm a hopeless pack-rat, and in the second I play on Master and need the high-end gear to survive. That said, I do tend to limit how much I take from any one location, as I usually leave items with a value less than about 50-100 (depends on level and financial situation) where I find them.

All of my characters have RP-specific limitations at the start, and I often find additional ones as I play. To elaborate on the latter: I'll get a feeling that I should/not do something I'm about to have the character avoid/do and will run with it from that point on. I also have some additional global limitations, as follows:

-Strict limit on the number of potions or (where applicable) arrows I may carry at any one time; any extras are left at home for later use
-Tying in with the above, I may not have more than a certain amount of same in storage
-No more than two weapons (I don't dual-wield due to hotkey issues), one suit of armor, and one 'civilian' outfit may be kept; all excess must be sold
-I may not exceed my current carrying capacity for any reason, and when I reach it I must immediately go and sell stuff
-I may only purchase one home per character, and it must be the one most suited to the RP (Honeyside for a Thief, for example)
-Spare crafting supplies must be kept to a minimum, and I may not buy Ingots I cannot yet use
-When I hunt animals for crafting and/or alchemical supplies, I eat the meat (where applicable) so it's not wasted

Hey all of you,

I read this thread and found it very interesting.
So interesting i happend to put together a big list of things or you could say a guide for better immersion.
And now i'd like to share it with you:

Skyrim Unnessecary Immersive Ruleset(Put togther by Pr1malScr34m):

Major Rules:
1. Abuse of Game Elements/Exploits/Bugs is strictly forbidden!
1.1 That contains abuse of the system in any possible way e.g. Enchanting/Alchemy/Smithing
1.2 Also contains inventory and menu pause for cheap tricks like potions etc. (Hotkeyed items are excluded because you don’t stop the game flow, thus not breaking immersion)
1.3 Don’t abuse/exploit AI or pathing
1.4 For better immersion try to set the Timescale up (Console then type, “set timescale to 5”)
1.5 You can even go as far as to say there should be neither a map, compass nor crosshair (you can deactivate these with Immersive UI)
2. Fast Travel is forbidden! (Use the Following Mod, if you do not have the Willpower)
2.1 There are different Levels of FT limitations:
1. Avoiding of FT, but with the right to use it
2. None at all/incl. or excl. Horses
3. Special Rulesets e.g. Only-on-horseback-FT
3. Play as if there was no reloading option, one must live with the consequences!
3.1 Dead is dead (for Npcs)
3.2 Don’t get yourself in Danger if you are not sure you are ready (You wouldn’t do this in RL, would you?)
3.3 Only save at safe places
3.4 If you are caught stealing/killing/etc. deal with it and live with the consequences
4. Put good effort in your character creation; give him a personality and ethic and COMIT TO IT!
4.1 Depending on your character you respect/disrespect wildlife/Civilians/Men/Women/Races/Factions/Property of others/Deities/Corpses/Etc differently, the same goes for your appreciation of Good and Evil and where you stand
4.2 Choose your level of aggression/mercy/trust/greed and Pursuit and Respect of Strength
4.3 If committing to a personality means having to go the harder routes take it!
5. Treat him/her like a human being, which means one has to eat, drink, rest and act appropriately!
5.1 One can chose different Levels of Immersion here:
- How often one eats and rests
- How regular this happens
- If one is allowed to wait (T) instead of sleeping
- If one has to visit an Inn or can sleep anywhere
- Eat in an instant or take your time, sit down etc.
- Variety of food
5.2 You wouldn’t wear your heavy and uncomfortable armor all the Time, so don’t force your Character to do so. He can change in safe zones and undress for sleeping e.g.
5.3 Honor your fallen Companions, e.g. taking them to good place for their burial/taking their Clothes and/or Weapon and keep it etc.
5.4 Don’t go to much over the Limit of realistic carrying capability e.g. choose to leave 50/100/150/etc. units unused.
5.5. Care for yourself, your Horse and Companions just like they were real
5.6. Adapt your Clothes to the Weather e.g. wear a hood when it’s raining/full-body clothing in icy areas
5.7 Act like a Human Being that lives in a civilized environment, close doors behind you and don’t sneak people in the face
5.8 If you have been severely injured or died simulate your recovery process by sleeping/resting a few days
5.9 Read the Books if you have the Time, they are interesting and you don’t increase your skill by simply opening a book do you?
5.10 If you talk to someone then talk about everything available and have an appropriate leave-talk

These were more or less Examples so as to motivate you to think yourself:
Generally that means: Don’t do or say something that your Character wouldn’t.

Leave me some Feedback wether you liked it and why or why you didnt.

Mfg Pr1malScr34m

PS: Even thou i'm in 12th class and am an A+ Student in English i still remain german so please dont judge me for my english skills
PSS: Browser somehow screws with my arrangement, trying to fix, hope i can do it
PSSS: I am unable to fix it so I'llprovide a Downloadlink: http://www63.zippyshare.com/v/81479202/file.html(It's on Zippyshare and of course 100% Virus free)

Only if you get too close. Bears are much more territorial than horkers though. You can get pretty close to horkers. If you hear a bear growling in the distance, you are getting too close.

It never happens to me. I can spot a bear on the top of the hill, as soon as he sees me at all he'll charge right on me. Same with horkers, as soon as I enter it's field of view of one whole herd will start following me. Could it be because I play on master or something?

I play my ps3 whenever I'm on my treadmill. To help you understand how I play
My set up, ax720 tritons, and use my LED 32' samsung in front of my treadmill and use a split fish controller. This helps me immerse myself and makes it so I get a work out

Now then, my rules.

1. If I want my character to run, I have to jog/run. I usually just walk on an incline at 4.5mph, so for the most part my characters are forced to walk.
2. Fast travels and horses, are a no go.
3. I stick with my characters ideal set up, my first play through, I tend to run around as an assassin/ rogue type
4. I follow the original five tenets. Which causes issues with me and the game at times.
5. I sleep at night, or at least, force my character to pass out for 4 hours a night if I find a camp at night.
6. If I was hurt severely and had a difficult battle, I'll force my character to sleep for a couple days to act as if he/she has rested to heal, or passed out because of inuries.
7.I don't wear helmets. I'm a vain person, I made it so my character looks like he/she did for a reason, not so I could cover their faces.
8. I limit my magic to healing, I'm not one for spells, and my philosophy has always been, "rage early, rage often."
9. I limit my use on two handed weapons, as I've seen that they make battles too easy at times.
10. I disregard shields, if you can't take a hit, or be clever enough to get around being hit, then your a crappy rogue/assassin.
11. If I want my character to swing his weapon, I have to swing my arm with the controller in that hand. Since I'm using a split fish controller, I have half my controls in my left and half in my right, so it's easy to do.
12. Limit my desecration of the deceased. Cracking open a cold one isn't to my liking.
13. If in a town, I'll sleep with my armor off.
14. If I don't have a potion on hand, I won't use it.
15. If I botch and mess up, i live with the consequences of what occurred. ( Accidentally killed a guard, etc)
16. If I stop walking on my treadmill, or catch my breath from a run session, my character does the same.

And the list goes on. I have too many rules, maybe that's bad. ha.

If I did that...

That's basically how it goes, it'll pay off though haha. I liked how the person above listed a lot of the rules we set to play the game more immersively, I'll probably toss all of these on a MS word document for a better idea of what I can do to make the experience more life like.

I change to clothes from armor when I enter a town, and stow my shield and arrows (WHERE though?! WHERE do they go?!). I also try not to fast travel, and tend to sleep every night somewhere.

I RP pretty extensively, so I follow all the associated rules. No FT, no spam smithing/enchanting, keeping "normal" hours, resting/eating at appropriate times. Basically, I treat it like it is a second life instead of a game.

I've found RP'ing to make this game insanely enjoyable. I basically uber-smithed/enchanted myself to godhood on my first playthrough and got really bored, really fast.

I've also found that seriously RP'ing also puts quests into new light. I am no longer thane of every hold and master of every faction. I'm Thane of Whiterun and and Harbinger of the Companions, and am quite happy with my life and little home in Whiterun. I've found I cannot legitimately support the SC cause as that would involve betrayal of Jarl Balgruuf, who is my Jarl, patron and friend. I haven't done the CW quests yet, because my char believes that Alduin is the more significant threat. However, the rebellion will have to be dealt with eventually (post MQ). Stuff like that.

You can easily break this game quickly and get bored within an hour.

Or you can impose your own rules, RP, and get countless hours of enjoyment. Take your pick.

01.) Never fast travel.
02.) Always cook food, eat and drink three times a day. Sitting down, with company, if possible.
03.) Find shelter for the night whenever possible, and always sleep 8 hours a night...
There's probably others I'm not thinking of.

Holy OCD Batman! I kid! I kid! Along with cooking food and trying to get 8 hours of shuteye and stealing anything NOT bolted down and upgrading all my items, and...

Wow! I try to remember to go back and get my horse when I enter a town, but sometimes, I forget.
I really try not to mess with wildlife, but when you have a @!@#!@# sabercat or a pack of wolves messing with you I turn into Liam Neeson in The Grey...

Also, I give gold to the mendicants in the town squares. I don't care if you are a drunkard or not. I will always give gold to the homeless...

With my latest and longest living DiD char (the only one I currently have)...

1. Don't talk about skyrim
2. DON'T TALK ABOUT SKYRIM

Seriously though...

1. No fast travel. Carriages allowed.
2. Set timescale to 1 (been doing this since MW)
3. Because of 2, I will have to wait or sleep. If it's night and I want day, I sleep. If it's day and I want night, I'll wait but it will be somewhere one would actually pass time (pub/inn, market, home, camp out in the wilderness, etc.)
4. No xhairs.
5. Don't use quest markers (Turning off ones that are on when I get them).

I've never encountered any problems with setting the timescale to 1. There is a delay with Farkas during one quest but that is all it is. About a 2 minute delay.

Food is a unique case. I play an assassin character but more than that. I play a sort of feral khajiit. I kill game animals and eat the meat raw. Between that and the potions I drink (which are pretty much plant based) I get enough sustenance. This also makes the alignment for my character a bit chaotic. For kicks I will mortally wound an NPC that will run away, I'll chase them around knocking their hp down enough so they take a knee, heal up, run and repeat. I even once bought a staff from a nord npc, use the staff on a nearby dead wolf (resurrection), then struck the npc so that the wolf would give chase and kill him.

It's not that I'm evil, I'm feral and so I see other npc's (except other khajiits) as prey ("the prey approaches") and there is a reason for the expression "playing cat and mouse".
