Used an M16 for a previous job, and have played around with AK's.
I currently have 5 semi-auto AR's (one is the wife's)... four of which I built from components.
I have one AK. I bought it assembled, but have done work to it.
The AR-15/M16 weapons system is leaps and bounds easier to change out parts on, tear down past normal cleaning disassembly, and is much more prevalent in this country than the AK (Military, Law Enforcement, etc).
I've shot an M16 with irons accurately on man-sized targets out to 500m, and I have one I shoot further with glass. I like the factory sights a LOT better than the AK, longer radius, more precise, better adjustment, etc. Higher velocity, lighter rounds, tighter accuracy, and to be honest I've only had a few failures in all the thousands upon thousands of rounds I've put through the platform... in any environment. Yeah, you can get any weapon to have a failure, and knowing what NOT to do you can help prevent those failures as well. I've put a good 10,000+ rounds through my personal AR's the last few years, so I'm obviously a LOT more comfortable using them. I've actually got about 1,500 (approximately) rounds down an AR right now between cleanings, and I haven't had it malfunction yet... this is also in a grassy environment, and it sits in a safe when it's not at the range. I wouldn't intentionally throw it in the sand, but I wouldn't do that with an AK either.
While I've never had a failure with an AK, I haven't put as many rounds down them. I've seen failures from them, as I have from the M16 platform.
All weapons have failures - they're machines, and they break. Especially when abused. If it leaves the safe, eventually it will have a mechanical issue.
I personally prefer accurate shots over volume of fire, even though at times you NEED that volume of fire. Both weapons systems will put out the wall of lead when needed, but I would trust an M16 to give me the more precise shooting I prefer.
The myth of an AK being invulnerable and the M16 being a Jam-O-Matic are both simply myths. Weapons maintenance is important with ANY weapon if you want it to function reliably, and you can't ignore it if you want to trust it.
Comparing any two weapons systems is always a game of trade-offs, and as per my personal preferences I end up siding with the M16 guys.
But this debate is almost as bad as 9mm vs .45. At the end of the day it comes down to personal preference, the condition it is in, how you maintain it, and how you train. Either will get the job done under most conditions.
:banghead:
I would take either over a pointy stick, though.
