The Ak-47 for its reliability its what you need in the desert

I'll take the range and velocity of the M16 hands down, plus I also think it's cooler lookin
I used to shoot my pops AK all the time and they're pretty sick, the only thing I mildly disliked was it's heat resistance(but it's [censored]in sweet lookin when it spits out some fire lol)

It depends on the situation, the M-16 has a better range in both automatic and semi automatic modes, but the AK-47 requires less maintenance and is designed to fire reliably in muddy, wet and frozen conditions of the Soviet front line, so in an actual "wasteland" situation the AK may be better suited.

For the game though I think the M-16 looks cooler...

I'd take the AK-47. Only thing M-16 has going for it is accuracy. FO Tactics I always pick the AK over M-16.

New Vegas known Weapon. Anti-Material Rifle or M1 Garand.

Not sure if they'll return, but in Fallout 3, the CAR was a very reliable gun for general purpose. Hunting Rifle is my favorite unscoped item. and the Sniper Rifle is a babe.

Of the two, M16. I've used the Kali way too many times. Other than those, I'm a Thompson man B)

The M16 has quite a bit more range and a higher velocity, while the AK-47 is much more reliable when compared. But it doesn't exactly dwarf the original military standard issue M16 because they could also be thrown in the mud, beat to hell n' back, submerged in water for long periods of time, etc.

Take viet nam as an example of their performance, right up there with the AK

AK, probably. The reliability, stopping power, and low mantinence make it ideal for wasteland conditions. Sure, the M16 is accurate, but it has more jams than the Smuckers company.

Not sure why this is in the NV section though. There's going to be an M16-type rifle, and I'm betting that the Chinese Assault Rifle will be back as well.

If I were to pick a weapon outside the two choices, it would have to be the M14 EBR, which merges the sniper, assault and CQB functionality into one rifle...

Surely you can't have a FPS without an AK-47? Right?

While the M16 is actually not extremely unreliable(an M60 on the other hand...)the AK is even more reliable but the M16 has greater range, accuracy, muzzle velocity, and the AK is damn near impossible to control full auto while the M16 is pretty easy to control but M16s don't do so well in the desert with all that dust or so I hear never shot an M16 in a desert but I have personally shot both the guns and found the AK to feel cool but the m16 is more practical and is just,for lack of a better word,better for killing.

Ak47 for its reliability in the desert environment, which would cause the m16 to jam and break down.

The AK is select-fire. It is capable of a single shot per trigger pull. The M-16 has good low temperature performance. The main difference for reliability is that the AK has larger tolerances, only two locking lugs on its bolt, and the bolt rides on rails. This means that a bit of grit that gets in the gun is less likely to hamper operation, which is good because the AK action is more open to the surrounding environment. Additionally, the AK's long-stroke action keeps more of the heat away from the bolt which gives the extractor spring a longer life before needing replacement.

Of course the AK comes with some downsides. Looser tolerances means less consistency in how parts mate causing lower accuracy. A long-stroke gas piston adds weight, increases reciprocating mass, adds parts to break like the op-rod, and moves the heat forward to the handguards. The last is minor unless you are shooting magazine after magazine in full auto. If you are, don't be surprised when your handguards light on fire. AK's tend to have pretty light barrels. I'd probably take an AR over an AK in a fallout-like post apocalyptic world because it is easier to change barrels and other parts on the AR. The AR is also mechanically simpler and lighter. It is less tolerant of dust and fine sand, but this can be mitigated in the most part by my high repair skill.

The Chinese assault rifle resembled the AK in Fallout 3 I sort of got sick of it,
I think the M-16 is something new and fresh and it's going to be awesome.

But to answer the Pole, the M-16. Call it familiarity is you want, and I've shot both, but way more M-16. Sorta shoot it in your sleep kinda familiarity, ya know?

As for the reliability in the desert, I can clearly remember the crunch, crunch of sand in the locking lugs when closing the bolt, but for the life of me I can't actually remember any failures to fire. Well, they do say memory is the third thing that goes with old age..................................

And shoots bullets(like a 2mm), it has a clip on the right side but takes MF cells on the left side.
