Why aren't there Spears or Polearms in Skyrim?

I'm pretty sure they had Spears and Polearms in Medieval times...or at least Lances...

They were removed after Morrowind, before Oblivion. The beginning of the, ahm, streamlining.

They got banned because they were over powered and Vivec rage quit when they got nerfed. The Volcano exploding was the Thalmor taking care of the entire game worlds remaining store of pole arm weaponry and throwing stars/daggers/crossbows. The volcano is all just a lie, it was a magic bomb planted in the center, boom. The sacred weapon to kill them is now gone. Somewhere out there in the outer planes there MIGHT be one or two spears left, but they are relics from another time. Not as random or clumsy as a sword, a more elegant weapon for a more civilized age.

Would've been fun to play Spear/Polearm and Shield.

Should've left Axes and Maces out of the game.

I mean, who even uses those ugly things lol.

Swords FTW

The Thalmor stole them all and used them as their exclusive weapons of choice, that's why the Empire lost.

The only race capable of creating them no longer exists.

You answered yourself with the first comment. "Medieval times". Dwemer lore or not, if this game had guns it wouldn't be TES.

Sure it does. They decided not to add them because they likely thought we didn't need variety when it came to weapons in an RPG, although it now seems they think we don't need all that much variety in general.

wow. the thought pattern of these forums. Skyrim is indeed simplified (not exactly in a bad way) but to say that's why they don't have spears....my god.

The two first questions bethesda recieved when they wanted fan questions.....are there werewolves? and are there spears?

I fully believe Bethesda were suprised when that was such a popular question.

Why have they been removed? In order to reduce the amount of work, spear are compeltely different from all the other styles of weapons, and in the history of playing games.....they are often least chosen.

I for one love spears though, they really suit certain character styels.

EDIT: Bethesda were like "look dragons!" while seeing how much tyhey could take out of the gameplay and still get away with it.

Well, you're free to provide your own reasoning as to why they may have been removed.

If they had actually spent any decent amount of time on their own forums, they wouldn't have been surprised.

Again, if they had actually spent any decent amount of time on their own forums, they would have known that people wanted spears and crossbows back after Oblivion was released. It should never have been an issue or a surprise for them.

Exactly. There isn't much of a difference between swords, axes, and maces. Spears and crossbows are far more different and should have been implemented. You can tell they had simply decided to be lazy though, as you can only bind a one-handed sword or two-handed axe. They didn't even care enough to add spells for the other melee weapons.

It does in a way: Spears and polearms would need their own animations, which would take extra time from the character animators. People were already complaining about the bad animations for them in Morrowind, and for a good reason. So Bethesda probably thought that it'd be easier to just leave them off. YMMV if you would consider that "streamlining".

Personally, I don't mind missing polearms. They were mostly made for fighting in formation, and were kind of impractical in single combat, even though it was possible of course. The missing spears bug me a bit, since that was one of the oldest and most common weapons in history. Any of us could just walk to the nearest park and make a basic(if clunky) spear right now. So it's a bit weird to see none in the game.

Skyrim doesn't take place during Medieval Times, it takes place during and after the 201st year of the 4th Era.

As for polearms, I think they would be far too slow in any case. In caves they would be useless tactically and unless you are on the front line of an army with hundreds of other lance-toting common soldiers they are inneffective against enemies, as their attacks are incredible easy to parry.

last I checked this was a game.....and I know that a dagger would be pretty useless against a dragon...but i can still kill one with an iron dagger in skyrim.

The only reason ot leave them out was laziness....its a weapon type that would take alot of work to work in but they obviously don't thionk people want spear enough to merit the work.

You can't parry in Skyrim, and it isn't like warhammers are known for their speed either.

True. But yeah I wouldn't consider that streamlining.
