Why aren't there Spears or Polearms in Skyrim?

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 9:59 pm

I think it mostly has to do with not having enough time to put it in or maybe they decided to sell it as DLC.

Isnt the "were in Skyrim they dont use spears" or "Vikings didnt use spears" flawed on all counts?

1. Some NPC dont hail from Skyrim, did there spears sudenly vanished?
2. Vikings not using spears? Did a search on google, found viking and spear in less than a minute. http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ancient/vikings/weapons_01.shtml
3. Guess what kind of weapon a Valkerie is depicted with in most pictures.

Maybe Bethesda should take this oppurtunity to have Spears included in the next DLC, maybe on 1 handed perk, with the note that you cant use 2 spears at the same time.

I find the lack of Spears/Polearms in Skyrim as a problem with lore.

- The Skyrim Book "The Lusty Argonian" specifically mentions Spears.

- There are no Spears in Skyrim

My lore is ruined.

Wait a minute.......are you trolling or something?.

Well first of all, it's not the medieval ages in the world of the Elder scrolls. It's a fantasy timeline, so although they appear similar, they are not the same.

I do wish they brought them back though. Would be an interesting weapon, but I don't think it's really a big deal. There are many things that should be in the game, but aren't. Maybe a DLC will add some of those things?

Or, if you play the PC version you could mod them in.

Couldn't they just add them as "foreigner weapons" like Scimatars are.

Are Imperials based off Romans?

Imperials could've brought Spears to Skyrim.

I would guess by the look of weapons and definetly armor that imperials are really resemblanced to Roman Empires.. Fits in with the vikings aswell since we in the north (Sweden, Denmark, Norway) fought the Roman empire for centuries.. Taking / losing land

So Bethesda probably thought that it'd be easier to just leave them off. YMMV if you would consider that "streamlining".

People don't consider that streamlining. That is the VERY definition of streamlining.

because apperently in arena we where allowed to travel to all of tamerial. and then in dagger fall it was only one giant province.streamlining was there even before oblivion.

Arena you could fast travel from one city to another, but you couldn't exit the gates of one city and travel by foot to the other. Everything in between was generated. So, traveling to all of Tamriel - yes, but it was pretty limited when you think about it.

I wonder too as spears are an ancient weapon that would definatly be used in such a Nordic environment!

Absolutely! I don't think people would really want to hunt most of the larger beasts without them. Spears are a sorely missed weapon type for me. I would also like to see halbers, pikes etc. and I would even understand if the animation set was similar/the same for all of them.

I would love to have my spears back, and to a lesser extent crossbows and throwing weapons. Lesser extent because I personally didn't used those as much whereas I was a big fan and user of spears in Morrowind. Hopefully they will be added in a DLC or at the very least in a new game.

I'm pretty sure they had Spears and Polearms in Medieval times...or at least Lances...

I hope this isn't a spoiler but...this game is not set in medieval times. It's not even on planet Earth

It's too much animating and too hard for BGS to do. It is really related to why swords, axes, and maces all attack the exact same way. Animation is BGS achiles heel, until they conquer their weakness we will suffer for it.

Granted they make up for this weakness by having a mssive amazingly detailed world to explore and they improved their animation very much for Skyrim but animation is still the kryptonite to BGS.

There are no spears in Skyrim because Lifts-Her-Tail is still polishing them - ALL of them. And by the time she finishes, the first ones are in need of re-polishing. Plenty of time, my sweet, plenty of time...

Also, the only province we know spears to be used in the Vvardenfell district of Morrowind - and they weren't used during the Imperial Simulacrum. They were, at most, a passing fad. :P
Flails were the fad weapon in the Illiac Bay. When can we get those back?

my guess would be time/money restrictions, don't feel sad people but Beth. does not have unlimited time/money, so they have to make hard choices.

and mods are soon upon us (CK mods that is :D)

....EDIT: Bethesda were like "look dragons!" while seeing how much they could take out of the gameplay and still get away with it.
Soooooooooo this that I would sig it too if I had room in my signature.

I think Beth got emotionally and physically worn out after Morrowind which took "close to 100 man-years to create." so they adopted that motto since.

Usually even mentioning Morrowind gets you the "nostalgia/rose-colored-glasses" line. I think what they don't understand is that those rose-colored-glasses are cutting down the glare from the shiny objects trying to distract us from the negative stuff in Skyrim.

A nice long spear or polearm would be nice.

You know when the dragons come in for a landing, they don't always make a long, slow straight-in landing like aircraft do. Often they kind of come almost straight down at the very end.

That would be a great time to run to the spot where it will land, put the end of the polearm in the ground, pointy end up, and watch it impale itself.

Beth did say polearms would be in, but not in the traditional sense. They've probably got something planned for it at least

Sometime between Skyrim's announcement and release. looking for it now

Edit: apparently a LOT of people discussed it, but all the articles discussing the subject with Todd Howard are gone. No idea why
