I think that you're just going to need to go with the flow on this one, OP...

RETCONN!

It could easily be explained that a cache has been found in the wastes of Vvardenfell or in the Imperial vaults, or their absence explained away as an embargoe on crossbow manuffacturers for whatever reason or Skyrim being considered not a lucrative area to sell arms as the Thalmor can bid a higher price in the arms race.

Crossbows WERE NOT invented by the either faction they were in a previous TES game and all Dwemer Spheres have crossbows.
Like I said earlier in this thread ... The reason crossbows were reintroduced is because they are the weapon of choice of many vampire hunters of lore. (i.e. Van Hellsing)

Spears were also in Morrowind as well as a few other neglected item/weapon types. This is the reason so many people are frustrated.

You are right then, but this newbie still stands her ground. The dwemer a race long since vanished before I ever got to explore the Elder Scroll worlds, and some ancient vampires who have been around for obviously a fair while, having similar weapons is not that much of a stretch. The more recent arrivals despite such wide spread and well known examples of such a powerful weapon, were obviously happy with what they had. Or maybe those interested in crafting weapons just never explored Dwemer ruins or wanted to go find any powerful ancient vampires and ask them to hand over their crossbow so they could study it. It seems to me (and I am probably wrong again) that this variety of vampires are considered more a legend and hardly anyone knows anything about them, let alone what weapons they might like to use.

Not the Vamps its the Dawnguard, the Vampire Hunters, that use them to slay vampire and thus the vampires despise this weapon. Vampires usually use their knowledge of lost magic to do battle.

Apologies, it is to cold and too early for me to think then, I retire from the argument. And no I am not ruining my DLC experience by checking it out that closely before I play it, so I better make a run for it.

But since the Dawnguard know about the vampire group and hunt them, maybe they actually went and investigated the Dwemer weapons and other ancient examples of weaponry and decided a crossbow would suit their purpose better than anything native to their culture?
