Its a game. You're seriously overthinking it. Just because we don't see Orcsimer children ingame does that mean there are no Orsimer children? Just because we don't see Toilets/Chamber pots does that mean the people of Skyrim don't have bodily movements? Because we don't see anyone Scooldy Doo does that mean the people in Skyrim don't hump to stay warm 90% of the year? No. It just means we don't see it in game. We've never seen Crossbows before, that doesn't mean they don't exist. We, in the GAME just haven't seen them but in the lore/game world they do still exist.

People still greentext? I want to insult you very badly but I won't.

OT: the dawnguard are probably just the only ones that still prefer and use the crossbow, or at least that's how they'll write in

In Skyrim they raise goats instead.

Perhaps crossbows can't carry enchantments? 0.o I can't think of anything, plus, shouldn't you be dead by now, Kenny?

I wouldn't do that. In my experience goats prefer to remain on terra firma...

I just get reborn again. YOU GUYS NEVER REMEMBER WHEN I DIE!
OT: I dunno, I just think people stopped using them after the time of Morrowind, and it became tradition to use bows. But the Dawnguard just really preferred crossbows, plus it fits with the vampire hunting thing.

Just watched the Dawnguard trailer and saw the crossbow and it got me thinking...

If crossbows existed back in Morrowind times, but nobody is using them in the late 3rd and early forth era, surely that would suggest the technology was lost? Crossbows are naturally more practical than the bow and arrow and have major advantages; wouldn't all of Skyrim be using crossbows?

If Dovahkiin is the only one with a crossbow shouldn't he share that technology with the people of Skyrim instead of using it for himself? Bethesda should have incorporated bows into the game from the beginning so all of Skyrims population use them. This would make more sense as the 200 years between Oblivion and Skyrim could have been the time of the "comeback of the crossbow", instead of just sticking it into a DLC.

I just like crossbows and I'm annoyed how they have decided to add them now, when they could have been a major part of the game...

So yeah, they could have handled it better. Rant over

1st off the crossbow is here because it's the favored weapon of vampire hunters [ie. Van Hellsing though not part of TES lore still it proves my point]

But anywho, it was not lost at all look at the Dwemer spheres you cant tell me they haven't been reverse engineering them They were just too impractical to use front line due to the long reload time and a bow is just so darn handy compared to a crossbows 1 and done method.

Which leads me to

Where did you get this nonsense? Crossbows have been around since the 4th century BC when they were used in East Asia. The Bow is a MUCH more efficient weapon as it doesn't require a slow reload and is much more accurate. The long bow could also shoot much further. The crossbow was given as a weapon to much less skilled archers because they required much less skill to use. Often times dumb-a** soldiers were given a crossbow, stuck in with the infantry and told to protect the man to their left and right.

Basically, you know nothing about the crossbow and your idea that they have "major" advantages is 100% false. They were used for a different style of warfare and in absolutely no way came along and replaced the bow as a more efficient, powerful weapon. The only thing that did that would be the powder gun.

once I get dawnguard one of the first things I want to do is replace the guards bows with crossbows. It makes sense to outfit guards with them, as it takes less training to use a crossbow effectivly than it does a bow. I doubt the Jarls want to spend too much on guard training... better to spend that bit extra on crossbows, wich can be passed onto new guards when the old ones retire or die.

Alternative response: You're wondering about the pace and maintenance of technological advancement in a world that's been stuck in a psuedo-medieval era with widespread literacy for thousands of years.

The people of Skyrim prefer Bows. Which, I do too, I prefer to actually kill a tough enemy who's coming at me rather then reloading half the time of the battle. By the way, stop complaining and enjoy the wonderful game that has been created.

Yeah, the whole thing about crossbows are better than bows is stupid. I'm a little hazy on the specific details but it was the development of the long bow that won the British the war against the french because their long bows had longer range and where more accurate than the french crossbows. So basically bows are more technologically advance than crossbows. just thought i should add that to your theory of crossbows are better than bows.

Just because we don't see/use Crossbows in Oblivion/Vanilla Skyrim doesn't mean they suddenly don't exist anymore.

We don't see Spears neither, but I find it hard to believe someone would forget how to make Spears....
Exactly. OP is definitely overthinking it. No one's saying these weapons no longer exist. Just that the TES development team is too lazy to include them.

Complain about this.. complain about that. Seriously can we make threads that talk about good things in Skyrim and not be a Debbie downer.
