why can't players continue to explore, kill etc once New Vega

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 6:58 am

Okay, so you say that BECAUSE it's a video game, the story AUTOMATICALLY svcks compared to a movie?

Wow that was one of the stupidest things i've heard.

Ever.

Listen, if game has a great storyline/plot that’s brilliant but if it doesn’t unfortunately that’s the way it goes because it’s a game. It’s not easy to combine good storytelling and gameplay. I’m not saying companies shouldn’t try to create a game with good storyline/plot or every game that’s released is going to have a bad storyline/plot. What I’m saying is judging by some people’s reactions on here there expectations are too high when it comes to the storyline/plot.

It’s okay for them to criticize the storyline/plot(which they have every right to) but I’d like to see them create a good plot/storyline for a game without ruining game play…..it’s not easy! How about you try to create a game with good gameplay and storyline/plot and see how far you get. No doubt your storyline/plot will be fantastic on paper but when you try to incorporate it in a game that has good gameplay the plot/storyline will suffer.

So take your time to read and THINK what I’ve written and try to create a game with a good storyline/plot and gameplay because that’s the only way you’re going to understand!

So, are you complaining about the gameplay being bad, or the story being bad?
Because nethier one is easy, Fallout 3 had to sacrafice the story (So they copied it..) for some decent gameplay, New Vegas has no issues with either IMO, I never had any 'serious' game breaking bugs, and the gameplay has improved in this game.

I’m NOT complaining about anything!!!!!!!!!!!! I think overall both games are great! I don’t think the storylines/plots were fantastic but I’m a realist when it comes to games, so I don’t expect great works of fiction, so I wouldn’t complain about storylines/plots .I was JUST reacting to some of the people’s reactions about the storylines/plots because I thought they were expecting too much because gaming hasn’t had enough time to perfect the combination of good storytelling and gamplay, due to its history. No doubt they are going to be games that do have that rare combination and as time goes by we’ll see more of them but for the present players can’t expect that rare combination to happen with every game because it’s not an easy combination to achieve. As long as the storyline/plot carries the game I’m satisfied and that happens in Fallout 3 and New Vegas

I hope they DO add the option to continue playing as a sort of "end-game," just as you can in FO3 / Broken Steel, for all the various reasons many have given (explore, find/finish side quests, have fun with maxed character, RP).

And I have the same backing as everyone on the other side of the debate: "because that's how I want it!"

Except there is at least one valid, factual reason supporting our desires: if the game gives the option to keep playing, you don't have to. You can just turn it off, if it's such a horrid insult to your sense of decency. But at least we would still have that option.

However, if there is no open-end (like with Broken Steel) beyond the last main quest, then we are forced to end it, without the option to continue if we choose to. (being forced to play my character in an artificial manner, and ignore or postpone the main quests, and go out of my way to explore and seek and/or finish side-quests due to a contrived timetable dictated by an irreversible finish, doesn't cut it)

I usually question not only the motivations, but even the character, of those who would try and limit what others can do, especially when it would not necessarily have any effect on them whatsoever.

Whenever I play a game which allows me to play past the final quest/task/mission then it always leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth.
And it makes me feel weird.
Like, "the game's still rolling, let's go out and see if anything happened."
"Nope, nothing here, nothing there."
"..."
"Well... So should I just turn it off?"
It would feel incredibly weird.
Always does.
Always gives me a distinct feeling of that somethings missing, post game content or whatever.
Would feel the same way here.
So there's a valid reason for me not wanting post-final quest gameplay.

Definitive endings can create more substantial endings. That's the short answer.

Fallout 3 ended because the theme was sacrifice. Mom dies giving birth to you, so that you may live. You get a quote from Revelations 21:6. Dad leaves the Vault so that he may save the wastes. Dad sacrifices himself so that you may escape and complete his mission. You sacrifice yourself and/or Sarah Lyons in order to save the wasteland.

Fallout: New Vegas's ending could've continued on afterwards, seeing as the Courier doesn't die, but this was probably left that way for future DLC(s), and/or because of the fact that they can expand the possible endings much further. Just take a look at what happened after Broken Steel finished.
Spoiler
If you infected the water supply, like four people get sick. Everyone else seems to be immune, when the virus is supposed to kill everyone infected with radiation, or high levels of it

They already said that it would be too hard to implement all the changes to the game, for instance if you are legion, then you drive the NCR out, then ALL of the NCR must be removed, guards citizens and all , this is the same for all endings, changes are so drastic it will not fit well with the game also companions go there separate ways, and character scripts touch almost everything so there is another reason and you cant say "hey all of this is finished and I heard that you left to X but want to continue travelling anyway?". Still I don't think obsidian/Bethesda will ruin the perfect ending for no reason other than to please the masses in fact I think most people don't want to continue playing afterwards. Oh and think about the DLC's as something the courier does afterwards.

So there's a valid reason for me not wanting post-final quest gameplay.

But it's not a factual reason.

The reason I gave was.

To repeat: with no set ending, you still don't have to play. Or you can. So at least you have the choice.
With a set ending, you can not continue to play. The choice has been made for you.

Again... One gives a choice. The other does not. That's a fact.

The rest is just opinions.

You can always load a save. You can do everything before the the final quest. You can do the final quest up to the point were it tells you its the point of no return. Playing after the end will take to many changes to the world for each main ending and all the other changes.

Except that what a lot have been asking for is for the game to 'automatically' continue as standard, which for those of us who prefer a hard definitive ending tends to leave a bad taste in our mouths as Gabriel mentioned.
Also most of the open ended games I've played have had main quests which were weak, insipid and generally lackluster, not to mention having almost a complete lack of choices as to how you progress through the main quest in the game. I've also found that again most of the open ended games have had a final main quest portion which left me feeling 'Was that it ??????'

I did suggest here in the forums prior to the game being released that the Devs add the option that was in Fallout 2, in that once you completed the game it then asked you if you wanted to continue playing or not. The responses to that suggestion were basically mainly along the lines of expletive away, that would ruin my immersion.
Personally I think the game giving the option as to whether or not to continue playing would placate both sides to some extent. Although with all the permutations in New Vegas that would affect post main quest game play and the lack of time they had even try to develope coherent post main quest gameplay consistent with how you played the game, I think would mean that they would have to add a qualifier that the game play post main quest would not reflect any changes from completing the main quest.

I have to say one last thing on this topic; I agree with everyone who does not want the game to continue (including the devs reasons) but I also agree with everyone who wants to keep playing (including me) In the final anolysts (I’m not judging the value of the game mind you) I have to side with having a continue option because 1. Some people (like me) want the option. and 2) if you don’t like it, then you don’t have too play after the end period. Therefore having the option is like a violence option ie: just because some people don’t use it, does not mean they should take that choice away from those of us who do.

PS I don’t care if you like the idea or not that is irrelevant to whether or not players should have the choice.

A Warning: “Freedom of choice is what we have. Freedom from choice is what we want” Devo.

You have the opton to save before the final mission. So you dont have to ruin the ending. Jesus why do people say "dont like it then dont play after the end" when you can already keep exploring and killing things, just by gnoring the final mission. Its a [censored] pathetic argument.

Besides why would anyone want too ?
I finished the game, and have finished every quest. I have no reason to keep playing, no motivation. I am just waiting for dlc. Oh I can kill more deathclaws for... Well I suppose there isnt a reason, I already reached level cap, so no exp, and have all top gear and 30, 000 caps... There is no reason or motivation, unless you just want to wander aimlessly and kill things, in which case you can by ignoring the last mission.

Okay so this is my first post (hi guy's). I took the time to read all 6 pages so far major issues telling who was replying to who half to time lol. I get the general view on all this however, regardless of my own feelings to this matter it might be worth considering this.... If say the amount of people who want the option to continue are even as low as 20% of the entire fallout new vegas playing population, wouldn't it be alienating those fans especially if they bought the GOTY of fallout 3 only to be disappointed when they found they could not continue this game ? Im just throwing it out there but can you imagine if 20% of the fan base boycotted a release because the developers didn't listen to them, especially since they now have all their game sales money in their pockets. If there was a time to reflect on what you made so far and give something back to the ones who just lined your wallets as a simple option to continue the game, id have said it would be now.

Anyway stimulating topic, all the best - :D

Well, then they should to a small DLC for like 80 MSP that ONLY allows post-final quest gameplay.
I don't want to miss out on a bunch of content just cause I don't want to buy a DLC for 800 MSP that forces me to continue the game.
A small DLC for this specific reason would work out just fine IMO.

Why should they get yet more money for something that was included free in a released edition of the previous game ? a simple patch allowing this minor detail to please the small percentage moaning i think would suffice ? Though i do see where your coming from, i just hate the fact that especially on the 360, they try to squeeze money out of you for literally everything...

A patch will force me to continue and will leave that weird feeling and bad taste in my mouth though.
A DLC of this size is like 5 kronors. (half a dollar, who can't afford half a dollar DLC?)
Completely optional and extremely cheap.
Everybody's happy. (Except me who will still stay a sour ol' hag.)

No. They are a minority. We shouldnt all have to have an open ending just because they couldnt keep playing.
And thier problem isnt even a problem because the last quest is optional, therefore ending your game is optional. If 20% boycotted fine, becuase obsidian said MONTHS before it would end. And "The devs didnt listen to them" the devs listened in fallout 3 and that created the abomination that is broken steel. This game has fare more endings, so a dlc would never work. Lined thier wallets. Unless J.E Sawyer broke into your home at the middle of the night, and held your family at gunpoint unless you bought the game then you chose to line thier pockets. You paid them to provide you with a new fallout experience, they have done that, the game works, and its more fallout. They dont owe you anything.
Honestly I am not seeinga good reason for anyone saying about making it open ended, when its exactly the same as not doing the final mission. It isnt hard. God forbid anyone here plays a Zelda game.

Because if the game continued it would make the ending shallow, you know just like BS did.
And I cant bash BS because ? Its relivent, people are asking for a dlc that lets you continue and we got that with BS and we can see how poorly it was executed.

That was with the GOTY edition which included all of the DLC's as part and parcel of it, the Broken Steel DLC which is the one which forced post ending gameplay did cost you to purchase outwith the GOTY edition.
