Why PC gaming is over.

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 6:51 pm

Consolitus is no different then "reality TV" and "B movies" or any number of low quality entertainment products that people can't get enough of. Even if consoles had never been invented we'd see the same trends right now as developers cater to the simple fact most people's computers just are not that powerful. With the increase in portables coming out in the next few years it can only get worse before it starts to get better.

The golden age of PC gaming ended when Crysis was released. For about a decade developers had little choice but to push the technology as hard as they could because every year or so brought dramatic hardware improvements that made possible equally dramatic graphic improvements. Now instead of dramatic improvements we have little fussy ones like "tessellation" that a lot of people could not care less about. The only way to bring back the golden age of PC gaming is to take it to the next level and Rage is one small step in that direction. When people start talking about terabyte video games and comparing the raw bandwidth of their gaming PCs then you'll know video game graphics have reached the next level.

My opinion that pc gaming from what ive heard is just barely afloat, yes games are still being made or ported to the pc but sales are an all time low and that is what really matters becouse if they can't sell em they will eventualy take pc games off the shelf indefinitely .

I know the manager of my local Eb games and everytime i stop by we have a chat about the latest games, what he thinks are the best game out atm, what he thinks will sell, how the industrys going etc and i remember one time we got to talking about pc gaming, and before he got in to discussing it he pointed to the corner and said " what do you think?" in the corner of the store were 2 small shelves with what... maybe 20 games at most maybe less. he told me they just can't sell pc games anymore, to me this signifies that Pc gaming is on its way out, atleast store bought anyway as i know there will still be people buying off steam or downloading illegally(which is part of the problem)

Another thing to add is that some pc devs are now moving over to making console games, even companys that make pc speakers and mouses etc are now making console accessories, to me this sais that they are doing whatever it takes to stay in the industry , to make money. Just my 2 c

At the end of the day, when and if pc gaming dies out there are always consoles, the problem is that people are just to damn stubborn to make the move becouse of how superior they think pc's are. Tell me this, when the day comes that the pc gaming industry dies, will you stop gaming altogether, or make the move to console?

Perfectly honest I would make the switch if some requirements were met.

- If every game on any console was compatible with mouse and keyboard

- If I could upgrade the parts when it came time to, instead of having to buy a whole new console. You can't even sell the old one for a good price because everyone will want whatever the new one is.

- If everything was backwards compatible. Not all the time, but most of the time you can find software, emulators, etc that will run really old stuff, nice to pull out a really old game every now and then

- Handles directories, file sorage, modding, web browsing, compiling, video, audio, external harddrives, etc

Now at this point we pretty much end up on another computer. I do alot of stuff with my computer, other than gaming. It's pretty powerful, so I can handle a bit. I use it because it is convenient. The 3rd dt point is actually half done by consoles already, but I'd pretty much want something I can upgrade, and then we just come back to the driver issues again. It would be easier trying to perfect computer uability for any skill level, yet maintan modding and stuff like that than it would be to adapt consoles.

Though then you come up to the triple constraint: security, usability and function. If you increase one, you generally decrease the others. Eg. Make your system super resistent to every thign ever created, but you can't navigate anywhere without a prompt coming up. Or simply not have admin rights. We are of course talking about Vista. I think Windows 7 did an amazing job of balancing this though. If other developers in other fields can emulate this diea, then computers would be perfect for nearly everyone.

i really don't understand why consoles don't give that option to be honest. there equipped with usb ports. you can hook a keyboard up to the ps3, not sure about 360 but imagine you can.
i would totally use keyboard and mouse on ps3 if it was an option. i got use to the controller years ago. the only thing i miss with using a controller is the ability to type.

i think also if consoles incorporated the use of keyboards and mice that would further improve console gaming because you could use text as a communication. most people seem to be afraid of using mic's.

Unfortunately, there are some people that will just never get used to a controller no matter how long they keep trying, myself is one of those people.

i can only use a controller with the right stick inverted. it feels more natural for me.

i hated consoles until i figured that out.

Yeah you can use a keyboard on the 360.

Dulphin, mate, i used to be a pc gamer myself and i know where your' coming from, i found using a controll pad a bit awkward and even frustrateing at first but with practice i became pretty skilled, in regards to fps, every 100 kills i get, atleast 83- 87 of them are headshots, its actually very accurate.

As for being able to upgrade a console in terms of hardware, no. But imo pc's are harder to sell than consoles. I tried to sell my old pc, then just the graphics card and a few other bits but no luck, atleast if i wanted to i could take my 360 in to EB or game traders and get something.

Yeah, you can play old xbox games on the 360, listen to music, watch movies, buy arcade games, use a phumb drive(USB) and you can use an external HD.

Cheers-

Autoaim in particular would annoy me significantly if I was usi9ng mouse and keyboard... If I don't deserve the shot, i shouldn't be rewarded the kill. Or at least that is how I look at it...
