Why PC gaming is over.

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 3:38 am

Let me just preface this by saying that I have been playing video games on computers since I was about 5 (Commander Keen, Jill of the Jungle) and then on to Doom, etc. I'm 26 now and and have both a gaming PC and an xbox 360. I cannot begin to tell you how frustrated, disappointed. and embarrassed I am with the PC gaming community and their reaction to Rage. Just because there were driver issues at launch, you run out to websites and rate the game a zero? You think the folks at id software, who just spend the last 5-6 years of their lives developing this game really deserve that? The problem was literally fixed in one day but apparently that wasn't good enough. Do you know how many times over the years that I've spend weeks trying to get a game to work correctly... with drivers, updates, new hardware, etc? I never once would think to destroy a games reputation just because of a small issue which was fixable with a little patience.

So, do you really think that game developers are going to cater to a community of gamers who will throw a hissy fit and potentially ruin your games reputation if it's not working 100% on computers with a million different configurations? This is why console gaming is the future. PC gaming isn't worth the headache anymore and really...you only have yourselves to blame.

PC Gaming was great when console weren't powerful enough to play decent games and there was no MP function. Now console gaming has caught up i dont see a future for PC Gaming. You have to spend around £400 a year to keep your PC up to date, the cost is alot higher than console gaming and apart from graphics there isn't much difference now. I'm an ex pc gamer on Q2 and Q3 and wish i could go back to those glory days. All good things come to an end and unfortunatley i wish i was wrong but PC gaming may be coming to an end :(.

They even have MMORPG on consoles now!!

Just because there were driver issues at launch

Thats [censored] ZeniMax just didn't test the game on PC. If they had they would have had the problem fixed before the release of RAGE. If they did test it then would they have not brought it to the attention of GPU developers before its release?
I am sure RAGE is not the only application to use the specific programming calls where the bugs are occurring, so if it was a driver problem, then the problem would have been reported to GPU developers yonks ago.. so, this tells me that John Carmack needs to brush up modern OpenGL.

... and for those that want to continue keeping their head in the sand, whats the chance of two GPU manufacturer drivers being "buggy" over one application? Tiny! No..! Zenimax justed didn't bother testing the PC version - more evidence this movie/bankster company doesn't have a clue about making computer games.

There are so many fallacies in your argument OP.

Rage is a great game, but if works day one on consoles it should work day one on PC. I still require all the community tweaks to play and it wasn't smooth until beta driver 3 for amd, and there's still npc flickering.

I don't know much about gaming on pc I'll be honest but I know that there are some pc gamers that had no problem at all at launch. Why was problem for some and not others is my question but I spose without knowing specifics guess we'll never know.

I dont understand why people spend time messing around with configs and so forth when you can just pick the same game up and just play it on a console. I'm not trying to troll here. I just dont know why people persist with PC gaming. This is coming from an ex PC gamer.

... because normally PC is a superior platform in terms of graphics, sound, and the controls are absolutely precise and PC display panels are generally better quality.
Also, players some times have the option to make their own levels, mods, tweaks, etc. All this is absent on console.

This is coming from an ex PC gamer.

I take your last PC gaming experience occurred last century

You only get the smoother gameplay by keeping your PC up to date which comes at an obvious cost.

Visuals i agree and the M and KB, yes i feel i'm probably more accurate with a Mouse, but once you get used to a controller, it works.

Gtx 460
Amd phenom x II 965

There now you can play all games high-very for the next 2-3 years for about 300 dollars. So point is you're wronger than hell. How much are consoles? Does PC or console offers the better experience? These components aren't even new. You don't need to upgrade every time more hardware releases, learn something about computers before spewing misinformation.

My old 8800 gts can play modern games on medium.

You obviously haven't got anything constructive to say or even an opinion on this subject.

I may be wrong about PC gaming. But i expressed my opinion. You however posted for a reaction so here you go.

Get back under your bridge, troll.

WTF?! consoles caught up to PC? WTF are you smoking? Consoles are 7 years old and 5 generations behind on video, still DX 9, and my current cell phone has a better processor and more ram than the 360. £400 a year to keep your PC up to date? Again, WTF, drivers are free you tool. I have a 2 year old Nvidia graphics card that runs rage absolutely beautifully with ultra setting, know what I spent this year? zero $$

My knowledge of recent PC gaming is a bit restricted. I haven't played on a PC for about 6-7 years so maybe i'm a little off on the difference in standard between PC and Console gaming. I expressed my opinion as to why i made the cross over from PC to console.

Right or wrong, its just my opinion :)

I wish everyone happy gaming on whatever format you play on. If i had it my way id still be playing Quake 2 CTF on my PC. But communities die, people MOVE ON ;)

ok, calm down...

Let me clear up. I think i did state it earlier. PC are more faster. By what i mean about catching up. When i was a PC gamer it was because all console games were boring and there was no multiplayer. I could sit on my PS1 and play GTA london, or i could load up quake and play with players all across Europe. By catching up i meant you can now do this on a console. Yes PC are faster and more powerful. But i can have the same amount of FUN(isn't this why we play games) as a PC gamer. Without the worry and hassle about upgrades, config tweaking and so forth.

btw, lay off on the name calling. It de values your post mate.

I have been gaming longer than you and I have never struggled getting a game to run properly the way I have with Rage. I am still unable to play it.

At what? 640 x 480?
I have a GTS 250 and I cannot play Quake 4 on max at 1920 x 1080 without suffering lag. I have to switch off AA to achieve smooth play, so perhaps you should take your own advice and stop the spew. ;)

The 250 is a tad better than the gtx 8800. If you can play
On medium you have proven my point. You and that other guy are just completely ignorant.

If you want to gain more performance tell me the rest of your specs and update your drivers. I can help you out

Ok, Quake 4 is a modern game and I am ignorant? I think you've overslept a couple of years.

No you cannot. I am a Linux user and you are a WGA user.
What are you going to advise? To over clock my card and setup SMS notification when it goes over 60 degrees? LOL, thanks, but no thanks!

No you cannot. I am a Linux user and you are a WGA user. Go and watch the temps on your motherboard or something.
LOL

Could be driver related. I don't remember how Q4 performed on my 8800. It ran crysis very nicely though and that game still sets the standard. So age doesn't matter that much. Game development have basically plateaued, I blame console limitations. Well you're a Linux user and you think so high and mighty of yourself, LOL LOL LOL
