I hate Nintendo with a passion for what they're doing to gaming. If their dominance continues I fear for the future of gaming. Already Microsoft and Sony are replicating some of their ideas in a desperate attempt to increase their market share. Yes Nintendo has made gaming more popular in recent years with the Wii but they're mainly casual gamers, not the type of gamers who will support the industry (i.e paying customers) for years to come. Casual gamers come and go, how many Wii's sit there gathering dust, maybe coming out for holidays etc? I can't believe that the most popular console out there is the Wii, worst of the 3, yes it's the cheapest but it's still inferior. I doubt it's top with hardcoe gamers.
You're probably thinking what's the point of this rant? Surelly the extra people interested in gaming is a bonus to the industry and if these casual gamers stop playing there's still regular gamers out there and even more casual gamers to hook in and maybe some of them will become hardcoe gamers but there is a problem, the longer Nintendo remains on top the more they influence their competitors and games developers. If more money can be made catering for casual gamers why bother with the rest, a situation that Microsoft and Sony could find themselves asking in the future and what about games developers? in the future they'll want to make games for the biggest market and if Microsoft and Sony joined the band wagon then the developers would concentrate even more on casual games. This would mean less choice for the rest of us.
For serious? Casual gaming may be on the rise, but Nintendo is hardly the sole proprietor. Ever heard of a little company called Pop Cap? They make some of the most casual and addicting games EVER. Peggle is mind-bogglingly simple to grasp, insanely difficult to master, addictive as hell and on the PC. Sure, with the Wii, Nintendo may be gearing it's games towards a different audience than Microsoft and Sony started with, but somebody had to. I mean, if there's an entire market of consumers out there (casual) that hasn't been touched, why not go after them? What's more simple than, literally, point and click?
And look at the games that came out recently and are coming out this year: Assassin's Creed II, Bioshock 2, Mass Effect 2, FFXIII, FFXIV, All Points Bulletin, Aliens vs. Predators, Supreme Commander 2, Metro 2033, Just Cause 2, Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
Games from (almost) every genre, and I wouldn't consider any of them "casual" (maybe FFXIII).
The "hardcoe" gaming market isn't going to decline like you think it is, we're just going to see a rise in the amount of "casual" games being produced. And who coined these terms "casual", "normal" and "hardcoe"? Is it the relative difficulty of the games they play? Is it how much they play? Is it how much money they spend on games?
Take people who play Farmville. You could consider that a casual game, right? What about the people who have spent hours on it to get their farm just right and turn the most profit? What about the people who spend real money to get that edge by purchasing items? Are they still "casually" gaming? That sounds pretty "hardcoe" to me. Same could be said about Sonic titles. It's a casual game; Start on the left of the level, run to the right, don't die. Sounds pretty casual, but there are people who toil over the levels for hours and hours JUST so they can finish them a little bit faster. Has that "casual" game turned a "casual" gamer into a "hardcoe" one? Or has that "hardcoe" gamer found enjoyment in a "casual" game?
I think until you/we can properly define the terms "casual", "normal" and "hardcoe", you/we can't keep talking about how "casual gaming will destroy hardcoe gaming".
