Well, if you speak with Caesar in the game, he turns out to be quite a linguist. Perhaps the proper pronounciation of his legion is to further accentuate this aspect?

Classic Latin is actually a very practical language, its nice to always have letters make the same sounds.

I love the fact that Obsidian actually put some research in to stuff and am very impressed with the pronunciation of Caesar - and I learnt something because I've only ever heard it pronounced with the soft c sound so who says games aren't educational

You could do that... except that Caesar salad is not name after Julius Caesar. It's named after the guy who invented it, who's name was Caesar, but since he was Mexican it's pronounced in the way that we are all familiar with.

He wasnt a Mexican. He was an Italian that emigrated to the Americas opened a resteruant in Tijuana.

If I'm not mistaken, which I might be, I don't think anyone pronounces it Cenchurion... in correct language anyway

The short of it is that after the fall of the Roman empire, latin was often pronounced, by speakers of a different native language, in their own mothertongue. This lead to latin being spoken with a completely different pronunciation depending on different areas in Europe. The actual proper Roman pronunciation wasn't reconstructed until the 1900's.

I didn't read the link, at work w/ not a lot of time, but it probably explains the development of the latin languages as well (Spanish, French, Italian).

Kaiser is the German pronunciation of Caesar and was pretty much the same position.

What I'd like to know is how they figured out the proper pronunciation of a dead language 200 years after a nuclear war that would have destroyed almost all evidence of ancient Rome ever having existed.

Gannon says something about that, like books, computers and such.
