Why I think skyrim is the way it is

to me they made a game that would produce the most amount of money,

not produce the best game that they could!

Exactly.

While they're a company in the business of making cash, they still have a mindset typical of smaller studios, I think. Stubborn lead developers with "the vision" (not knocking it.. it's a good thing.. compared to like looking up "polls" and developing from consensus), a base of operations nowhere near industry hubs (I mean, they're in Maryland all places), etc.. I think the people running it are all well meaning nerds, who genuinely want to create a fun game.

They don't consider that stuff because they know the average player will not play the game long enough to notice or be annoyed by that, and they know those dedicated fans that play 100+ hours will ignore it.

The bold was gone in Oblivion not Skyrim.

I'll argue this. The world of Skyrim is more realistic than Oblivion or Morrowind. There is a weight to your character's actions that was not present in previous games. A lot of ideas within previous games would break the game and destroy the feeling of realism. Having a character who could levitate, run like the flash, or leap incredibly high would make the game feel like unreal tournament. That isn't the game that works in this day and age.

I don't want to see players levitating, or running incredibly fast or leaping. That kind of stuff breaks gameplay, and breaks the sense of realism. I'm sorry if you don't like that, but that's the way it is. As a side disposition was never removed. You could argue it was removed at the micro level, but was replaced with a macro version that affected all merchants. Which makes sense given the context of the perk system.

Considering they have different voice actors saying the exact same lines, no.
Which they would. Or people would complain every guard sounds the same. They can't win.
Spell Creation is gone. - I miss this, but it doesn't go with Skyrim's current spell system well.
Disposition with NPCs is gone. - You mean the stupid pie chart mini game from Oblivion? That's been replaced with more meaningful persuasion dialogue topics?
Having merchants re~charge enchanted weapons are gone. - I fail to see how that's a bad thing. Just makes soul gems more useufl.
Lock Picking spells are gone. - They're not gone. There's a standing stone that gives you that ability. The spells themselves were "removed" because they literally made the lockpicking skill, perk tree and advancement useless.
Athletics is gone. - You mean the skill you increased by...running. It was useless.
Attributes are gone. - And replaced with a new perk system, which IMO is better.
Several summon spells are gone. - And replaced with different ones.
Ability to kill anyone is gone. - Which wasn't in Oblivion anyway, only in Morrowind. And with dragon attacks and radiant AI you'd cry if a dragon killed a character from the main quest.
Being able to do Alchemy anywhere is gone. - And replaced with a different system to make it less overpowered.
Repairing gear is gone. - Reasons for this were explained. The focus is now on improving equipment as opposed to "making sure it's not worse".
The Arena is gone. - The arena that didn't exist in Morrowind either. It's not got a place in Skyrim.
Several types of weapons are gone. - No more than Oblivion, it's just been condensed into two skills as opposed to...well...two different skills.
Several types of spells are gone. - In order to make magic feel more...robust.
You can't pick and chose your favourite bits from Morrowind and Oblivion and then go "SKYRIM svckS BECAUSE XXXX ISN'T IN IT!"

You have not even beaten skyrim apparently. your actions have no weight at all. nothing you do affects anything in the game. nothing.

Well the summons spells we do have now seem to do more. like the Dremora lord is way more awesome now than he was simply because he seems like a character.

Yes, they were gone in Oblivion, and I am fairly certain people did not like the fact that they were gone in Oblivion. Not to mention Bethesda published a game that brought back the ability to kill anyone after Oblivion.

Yes, leaping tall mountains in a single bound can break realism, but for everyone one realism breaking mode of transportation, like running like The Flash, there's at least three areas in which Skyrim breaks the realism it's own story is supposed to create.

Does it make realistic sense to be able to leap 1,000 feet in the air? No, not at all.

But it equally doesn't make sense that I become the leader of the Thieves' Guild and people in my own guild barely recognize it, if at all.

You also don't understand what weight means in video games. I'm talking about physical weight that can be felt through actions like turning, running, jumping and swinging a sword.

No, no, I totally get that Skyrim has much better handle on physics than oblivion or any of the previous elder scrolls. I thought you were talking about your actions having weight in the game world. but i see now.

I wouldn't say evil geniuses. I would rather call them clever businessmen.

That is kinda what i was getting at really. the bottom line. But I don't feel they were trying to be ethical when they were trying to find new and exciting ways of making the money. and the 11/11/11 deadline might have had a major factor in it as well. but i swear I have played this game before when i was playing oblivion. The same kind of thing happens. people only remember the most annoying things about these games. I have seen whole cartoons written on the idiocies of the combat system. I personally think that Bethesda actually did find some things that work in making a game like this, and so they include those things.

This could have made Skyrim the best game of all time:
  • Diverse and challenging dungeon puzzles (think Zelda)
  • Spell crafting / more spells
  • More weapons and armor... I mean, WAY more
  • A modern combat system with modern physics
  • Real racial attributes
  • Dialogue options (more of them)
  • More voice actors
  • NPC's reacting to your alignment / guild status
  • Having "Guildmaster" actually MEAN something
  • Diversify quests and work on the story
Bethesda didn't go for internet memes to make fun of their bad combat system in some backward attempt at publicity. It was laziness, a stupid deadline, and seeking profits.

That makes no sense to me. Why would every guard sound the same?

The guards are voiced by multiple people. They could have given the different people different lines to say. They didn't. They gave every voice actor recording for a guard the exact same lines. As oppose to giving different voice actors different lines on the same subjects.

In other words, they could have easily had more variety in dialogue than they did. And that is one of the reasons why I don't think voiced dialogue is the source of the problem.

Spell Creation would have gone great with the new magic system. I would have loved to have been able to make a much larger, and stronger, cone "flame thrower" Frost spell.

More meaningful persuasion options? What game are you playing? How many merchants can I persuade into giving me a discount? Can I, once an enemy yields, persuade them into giving me their gold and then telling them to run off?

Merchants re~charging enchanted items was useful. It was a way to give the player a two option system, now we have a one option system.

With said Stone, exactly how many times a day can I unlock a lock? The Lockpicking Skill tree and Perk system are useless even without the spells considering I can unlock a Master Lock at level 1 if I have enough Lockpicks and patience.

Athletics was useless? Evading damage was quite useful.

New Perk system has several useless and boring perks.

Yes... summons were replaced. Keyword there. Not additional ones added, flat out replaced.

Um... I wouldn't cry if a dragon killed a quest giver, it would be a much more immersive game.

Alchemy is still overpowered.

Yes, now we can upgrade gear to godly levels via power leveling and bad balancing.

The Arena could have been sparring matches with the Companions. Or at the College.

Removing weapons just to remove them is not amazing.

Spell system is hardly "robust."

Totally disagree. Removed because it wasn't prioritized, as indicated by Todd before game release.

Disposition with NPCs is gone. - You mean the stupid pie chart mini game from Oblivion? That's been replaced with more meaningful persuasion dialogue topics?
The pie chart was horrible, but by disposition he meant that each NPC had a personal "relationship" to you, in terms of like/dislike. it was oversimplified, but better than nothing at all, IMO. In Daggerfall and IIRC Morrowind the disposition of an NPC was a combination of their personal interaction with you, and how each of their factions felt about you. This was simplified in Oblivion, and finally removed in Skyrim.

Lock Picking spells are gone. - They're not gone. There's a standing stone that gives you that ability. The spells themselves were "removed" because they literally made the lockpicking skill, perk tree and advancement useless.
BGS already made lockpicking perks and advancement useless through bad design. If lockpicking is fixed, like with a mod, then that's a reasonable argument.

Ability to kill anyone is gone. - Which wasn't in Oblivion anyway, only in Morrowind. And with dragon attacks and radiant AI you'd cry if a dragon killed a character from the main quest.
Some people want no essential NPCs and some people want very few essentials. Skyrim gave us a lot of essentials, which I think is what nobody wants.

Being able to do Alchemy anywhere is gone. - And replaced with a different system to make it less overpowered.
You're kidding here, so I'm moving on...

Repairing gear is gone. - Reasons for this were explained. The focus is now on improving equipment as opposed to "making sure it's not worse".
If this is BGS' reasoning, then it's a huge misfire, at least for anyone who wants a challenging game. Removing limits (in games known to be OP) and replacing with more win = bad design. But a lot of people thought repair was tedious, and that's why they got rid of it.

Several types of weapons are gone. - No more than Oblivion, it's just been condensed into two skills as opposed to...well...two different skills.
Several types of spells are gone. - In order to make magic feel more...robust.
He's talking items, not skills, so your weapons response doesn't make sense. The spells were removed because of a lack of prioritization (see: shouts).

In my opinion, combat is far blander than it should have been.

As a dual wielding Assassin, I literally (if I even need to fight face to face) don't have to do anything other than spam L, R, L, R, L, R, over, and over. I don't even really need to use Power Attacks.

You have to put a large amount of new and different things (and/or massive changes) in a game that sets it apart from previous games - otherwise people will say it's a large expansion, not a new game, and they won't pay $60.00 for an expansion most of the time. I know I wouldn't.

The combat is laughably bad compared to any other game in this time period. Left click, right click, left click, left click. The enemies barely react to being hit, the combat has barely changed since Morrowind.

Halo 2 to Halo 3, and nearly every post CoD 4 game proves that wrong.

360. I won't buy Skyrim for PC because, as a player, I don't want to be the one who has to fix the game I bought.

Played with a Great Sword... it was just as boring as Dual Wielding because it almost literally boiled down to block, stun, swing, block, stun, swing, repeat.

This is what pisses me off about the combat in Skyrim.

This is their third console game for this series. It's also their second game for this series on the current console. And the fifth game of the entire series. Learn something...
