Worst Things In Skyrim?

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 8:23 am

The absolute worst is the hollowing out of the game.
No spellmaking, no attributes, no classes, no birthsigns, no armour degradation, no athletics and acrobatics, no NPC disposition, and whats left is a lot less. A godawful excuse for a journal.
Very few spells, very few clothes, merged leg and chest slot, only one ring, very few skills.

Very little storyline. Alduin is a dragon who wants to destroy the world.. why?

To keep this balanced I shall also name the very best thing of Skyrim and that is the world(building)
Beautiful vistas, detailed surroundings, non-hostile creatures, flying insects and fish. The Aurora.

I'm saying this in the spirit of constructive criticism and not pointless griping...

What you said about lack of guild requirements is a good point. Although in the Thieves Guild's first mission you have to sneak into an estate and crack a safe, which wasn't at all easy so if you can do that you are good enough to be the boss.

Also the already mentioned lack of expression on the PC's face and the way they stare right ahead when talking to someone, but I'd consider that minor.

The journal is next to useless as is the map, but I can live with those.

What I really hate is the reliance on random quests to pad out the guild quest lines, compass markers and (saving the best for last) auto health regen. Hate that! That's about it.

The good things vastly outweigh the bad things.

The fact that Oblivion had better game physics and interactable objects. As in, things can be moved in Skyrim albeit awkwardly. In OBV things moved from the point at which you grabbed them. In this game objects snap to some rigid angle, which makes for clunky placing of objects. Also since I always play an agile sneaky type on my first runthrough of a TES title, the character movements in Skyrim svck horribly. No attacking while jumping or swimming, no jumping while sprinting? Come on, this is 2012. Literally 100 games before SkR came out had basic features such as this. But hey, I know the lack of features is NOT the fault of the talented devs, animators, coders, etc. You can plainly see they had some amazing things in store but the 11.11.11 deadline made it impossible to implement it all. As always, I blame the execs. The suits. Sigh.

NPC's are generally hollow. That annoys me the most.

As someone has mentioned, the fact that NPCs talk to us as we walk past, as opposed to a simple greeting.

I hate the lack of choices in the game, and the lack of different endings. Although not having all these wouldnt be so bad if the questlines had better storylines.
*Cough college of winterhold questline cough*

Ironically mages, who are supposed to be a good bit smarter than the rest of the population, actually have the dumbest questline.

The [censored] writing. Don't get me wrong; Bethesda has good stories, they just can't write them worth a [censored]. That's the worst thing about Skyrim for me. Well, that and Farkas' voice and every one who has it. God I hate that voice so much.

How many people have you ever walked up to and just started chatting about their pasts, and political views? Zero, that's what i though.

Sometimes people just dont want to talk to some random person. We live nearly all our lives not talking to 99.999% of the people we come across in our lives. So its not unrealistic at all, or less "alive" when a game does the same thing. Why would they want to talk to you anyway? All it is is you asking questions and only giving small one liners back. A very boring conversation if I do say so.
On the other hand, when it is your wife, your house carl or one of your closet friends...

Also I find that generally people are very willing to talk to a random person if they have some reason to do so. And in Skyrim where people mostly live their lives in a very small area, a traveler would be that reason.

The fact that after 500 hours of gameplay, the game now freezes when I try to enter the Blue Palace in Solitude. Just locks up on the loading screen every single time. I wouldn't be surprised if it were to happen in other places too. Great.

My quote from other thread:

One quest example; i have entered Cidhna mine, the most secure prison in Skyrim. After 20 minutes i'm escaping this the most secure prison through tunnel. This tunnel is so visible and has simple door which can be unlocked with a key. And a prisoner has a key.

Wait a minute! What is this?

This is insult to intelligence!

The most glaring flaws to me are the factions. The Dark Brotherhood wasn't bad, but I thought the Companions, the College, and the Thieves Guild were all terrible. The companions and college questlines were way too short. The college only has seven real primary quests, and the companions has a pathetic six primary quests. You only complete two quests, and suddenly the companions all trust you? Ridiculous. And only one primary quest in the Thieves guild actually involves theft. ONE! Sure, there's plenty of theft in the Thieves Guild with the radiant quests, but hand-written quests involving theft would have made the Thieves guild significantly better. The Radiant AI quests were used to fill up the factions, and I think that was a terrible mistake. I think each faction needs at least a dozen hand-written quests, and the radiant quests should be used to make the factions have more content on top of that (Bethesda did this very well with the Dark Brotherhood, why not the others?!). The factions were incredibly disappointing to me, and don't even get me started on the civil war and the lack of a Thalmor questline.

For me it is the journal - really lackluster - it is neat and tidy, but I preferred the story elements of the old journals : (

In the pub setting I wouldn't mind a bit more in-depth conversation. But, I'm fine with it the way it is. If one were to add that dialogue, it would inevitably become boring (and not many people would use it anyway) because there can only ever be a finite amount of dialogue options for an NPC. Regardless, if I want to have a meaningful conversation with someone, it will be in a *real* pub. I don't fancy the prospect of fulfilling my need to communicate with an NPC in a video game. Would it make the game more realistic? Sure. Will people really utilize this feature? I suspect only a very small minority will, actually.

After I heavily modded my Skyrim it almost has no flaws. One of few things I dislike is character models. Compared to photorealistic surrounding they dont look realistic.

I want hireable companions and spouses to have unique dialogues and animations when they interact with the player and/or the environment. I also want to have a marriage that does not begin and end with shoving an amulet into someone's face. Might as well just cut the bullsh*t and get naked in the middle of the town. Even that would be more romantic than the current "Yeah, I want to get married too or whatever you want from me, bro." type of one-liners.

I'll list what I think are bad features, not bad bugs. So features I don't like:

1) Advancement in factions having no skill requirements. Not very realistic.

2) Smithing jewelry. I find it everywhere so it's not needed and since the last patch smithing jewelry is the best way to level smithing. So ... I make a bunch of gold necklaces so I can be better at making heavy armor. Sorry but armor/weapon smithing and jewelry smithing are just completely different and shouldn't have been added.

3) Being REQUIRED to join every faction to get some side quests completed or to find every shout. No role-played character would really do that yet Bethesda made it required in a role-playing game.

4)
Spoiler
Being required to become a werewolf to complete the only warrior faction in the game. It should have been optional or we should have been able to join the Silver Hands and purge Skyrim of the were-kind.

5)
Spoiler
Not having the option to clear out the Thieves Guild, even though the Lioness prompts you to do it and the Jarl wants it. Or at least the option to really conform the guild into something more respectable so they are not just evil bullies picking on the poor and lowly.

6)
Spoiler
No epic battle at the end. In fact you can just stand back and watch the final battle. Also afterwords no one acknowledges anything was done. So many other things are acknowledged by guards and NPC's, but saving the world apparently slips their mind. No talk with a god (Shor would have been nice) or daedra, no statue, no nothing.

7) No meaning anymore to what race or six you play. Letting anyone can be good at anything isn't really a good thing when you have ten races to choose from. I liked playing character who worked with or against their strengths. It made for great role-playing. Now it just doesn't seem to matter anymore.

8) Lockpicking the ONLY way to open a lock. I have to use that skill, and gain levels from it's use. Any character, be it rogue, warrior or mage ends up with a 70+ skill in Lockpicking by the time they are 40+ level. Why? Bring back Lock Bash and Open spells so their are other options.

Well that's off the top of my head. I'm sure I missed a few things that irk me.

Killcams.

Awful map.

Crap journal with no descriptions.

No armour/weapon degredation (WHY!!?)

Devolved hotkey system. (Hey instead of 8 lets give them 2)

And the overall lack of balls. Skyrim lacks balls. It lacks edge. Its played everything safe and suffered because of it. Playing it safe in terms of doing everything in their power NOT to challenge the player.

Skyrim is all about getting out of the starting dungeon and having all the best gear in 2-3 hours.

For me, it's definitly the guilds. They were more or less all disappointing. Most of them felt like just regular questlines, not like traditional guilds.
