You mean it would be a bad idea to eat 200 some odd year old food out of a broken oven?

Fortunately, by then most of the humans will be gone and wildlife will start to dominate the land again. I don't suspect it will take mother nature very long to reclaim the land, just look at Chernobyl and how fast that site is coming back.

Without Super Mutants and other non-wordly creatures to worry about (at least in the USA, aside from bears), I don't think that those living 200 years after the war will actually have much worry about food. Those still alive will be attached to small communities that grow their own food and live off the land. :)

The Fallout story is great fun, but the real post-apocolyptic world will be dominated by starvation and disease at first, followed by small communities coming together in the aftermath.

I know I could cuz I don't have an I-Pod; I-Pad; or I-Phone to plug in like all the rest of you. Just give me my Eyebot (ED-E!) and I'm happy. Besides, I'll find some big strong handsome wasteland dude to keep me safe and I'll just sit home all day throwing tea parties.

You'd be dead.
Fallout takes place years after the great war.
Even if the world was nuked to shizz tomorrow, you wouldn't last long enough to wander the wastes after the dust settled and the world was somewhat hospitable.

I'd go ghoul. Oh yeah.

Seriously, they live for hundreds of years. I have a hard time understanding why more people aren't trying for it.

Probably hard to reach that radioactive 'sweet spot' between living, ghoul, and feral.
Seeing as there are many more ferals than sane ghouls.

Alright let's put it this way since people are taking this thread seriously (I had my fun with it already).

This game is not a way to increase your odds of surviving a nuclear attack and I doubt anyone would believe otherwise.

The entire east coast of The United States and most major cities with populations over one million would be annihilated. The other targets would be military bases and missile silos. Anyone living within 20 miles of a nuclear blast would be incinerated. 50 miles away you'd probably get severe burns if you were out in the open in view of the blast. 100 miles away and you would likely be able to survive if the winds didn't blow the fallout (radiated dust and ash from the decimated ruins of a city) your way.

If you survived the initial attack and the fallout, you'd still have to contend with your electronics not working and having no power whatsoever (your car would be fried if it was made recently). You wouldn't be able to call your relatives to find out if they were ok either because the phone systems would be down. Looting would be rampant and anyone with a gun would likely shoot you if you tried to get near them.

Now is that a pessimistic evaluation? Yep. However it's probably more accurate than most would like to believe. In a nuclear exchange, the human race would become an endangered species and if I heard that the missiles were in the air, I'd drive as fast as I could to the nearest big city (Oklahoma City in my case) and park my car where I thought the warhead would detonate.

Now since that is over, let people have their fun. It's not like people are trying to be realistic.

Edit: adjusted the distances required to survive to be more realistic.

Nice Falcon509 :) Lets continue having some fun...

I agree with much of what your saying if Russia and the US go to war. For any other scenario, we're talking about a Much smaller number of bombs that are much weaker in strength, so your estimates all get cut by huge amounts in the more realistic scenario Today.

Your scenario is that of Russia attacking the USA with a complete launch of all ICBMs, which is clearly not the case anymore. Not the most likely scenario. China has a growing arsenal, but it is Nothing by comparison to Russia or the USA and as such the level of annhilation is completely different from the modern scenarios.

Over the next 100 years or so this scenario will continue to be viable. After that however, I no longer think the prospect of the US being annhilated exists. By then the missile defense systems will Really be coming into their own (they are already damn good with mass production in several countries under way), and the existing mass arsenal that Russia has will become largely inert as they can't afford to keep it up. Bomb yield size is not going up, and we in the US can't even get agreement to modernize our existing weapons. So I think the era of countries having Thousands and Thousands of bombs is limited to the lifespan of the current arsenal. Start 2 (if approved) will cut that number in half, and it will just keep going down until we get (I think) in the hundreds. Hundreds of bombs is more than an adequate deterrent and won't cost a mint.

In any other scenario (today a much more realistic scenario), we won't take nearly as much damage - it will be a smaller scale exchange with China, a conglomeration of Middle Eastern countries or (most likely) a single bomb set off in NYC or DC. In that scenario, being 30-40 miles away, I suspect the best we will get at this range is alot of wind, some heat and the death of all Electronics (as the EMP will go much further than the blast). In that case I'll be walking home. ;)

Surviving a nuclear war is not a fantasy - it really depends on the scale of the war. Will Fallout help you survive a war? Likely not very much unless folks pay very close attention and take it seriously. Concepts like going underground to avoid radiation, being armed (or protected by those with arms) to survive and adequate food/water supplies will be key factors.

@miaximus

I tried to get the numbers as accurate as possible but I knew I'd be off. I was describing a full nuclear exchange because that's what happened in Fallout and that's what people are claiming BS on (because we already know that nuclear weapons would kill alot of people) regarding the survivability of such an exchange.

As for a China-US nuclear war, I'm not sure that Russia wouldn't join in the fun.

I can predict the future:
War Happens, most everyone is dead.
100 Years Pass.
Human Settlements rise, and life begins again.
100 Years Pass.
Powerful settlements are everywhere, the world is still a hostile area.
The U.S. starts returning back to its old life in the year 2010.
The Game "Life" is created by Obsidian Entertainment.
Life is a game that shows how fun it is to survive in the current world, working at a real job, paying bills, and dealing with police!

And that, is the perfect future for me.

From Fallout, I've learned that in the event of a nuclear war or any other apocalyptic event, I should stockpile as many bottle caps as I can, because they'll become a valuable currency in the post apocalyptic world.

I also like to think I've learned some important skills for fighting oversized insects, crazed robots, large, battle cattle and other such every day threats that we'll all need to deal with in the event of nuclear war.

Also, I now know to be sure to keep a large supply of sarsaparilla, because not only is it an effective means of healing, but if I collect enough bottle caps marked with a blue star, I can collect an ultimately kind of unsatisfying prize.

With all these important lessons and more, I think I'm all set to survive any kind of global catastrophy.

But to be serious, I really wouldn't look to Fallout, or any other video game, for advice on how to survive in a post apocalyptic world. Because the fact is that as with other games, Fallout often sacrifices realism for the sake of entertainment. This is good for its value as a game as people really wouldn't want to play the game if it wasn't entertaining, even if it was realistic, but it does mean that it's not necessarily a reliable educational experience. This is not a bad thing, mind you, I don't play games to be educated, there are other things for that purpose, it just means that if I was worried about ever needing to survive in a post apocalyptic world, I would not trust Fallout to save my life.

True that! If Russia and the USA wipe eachother out, China will play it smart and wait for the two big dogs to die on the vine after the war. They just need to wait for the radiation to subside, and move in un-opposed at that point. I have little doubt something similar to this will happen if the US is ever defeated or "brought low" by a true disaster - the temptation to Prevent us from becoming dominant again will be too great to ignore in that case. I'm just glad I'm one of the 80 million gun owners in my country. :) Whoever does come better kill us all first, or its going to be a Long fight to the death.

Your numbers were right-on if we goto war with Russia, I will be one of those "shadows" on the wall at 30+ miles out. ;) Maybe I'll go hang out with the Bethesda ghouls if I survive, as they are in the same (actually worse) boat than I am. At least in Northern Virginia we don't have title wave danger if the Other apocolypse happens (asteroid/meteor) - they get drown in that event, and burned alive in the nuclear event. The east coast is about the worst place to be. :)

If I lived through it, I think I could keep it up... but Playing Fallout (any of them) won't teach you anything useful ~It will however teach you plenty of ways to die horribly if you imitate the in game behavior.

I see myself being taken out from afar by a Varmint Rifle wielding man in a red beret. So, I'm guessing, based on this game, I'd be stealth killed before I knew it.

Assuming it functioned like Fallout to the letter? Yes. How? Securing myself in a luxury hotel.

The new Tenpenny Tower? I think so. :spotted owl:

Yeah if our nuclear weapons stockpile isn't enough of a deterrent then the gun owners of America sure are. I'm a gun owner and a hunter and given the terrain out in this part of the country, an invasion force better bring tanks or something bigger...

I still stick by my decision to race to ground zero if a nuclear attack is imminent though. I'm not going to bother with being a shadow on a wall though... I want to be turned into the ash that becomes fallout. Besides, I want to know what it feels like to stand right underneath an exploding nuclear bomb.
