Your most disappointing game?

What game disappointed you guys the most?

I'd say for me, it had to be FF12. I thought the game was going to be so much better than it was. I was a fan of FFX and FFVII and when 12 came out I was jumping for joy.

Then I played it.

I couldn't believe they called it a Final Fantasy game. Its was more of a mild scifi/fantasy hybrid and it wasn't very impressive to be honest. The music was boring, the characters were boring, I couldn't get into the story. The combat system was automated. The story talked too much about people I hadn't seen, and half the time I didn't know who they were talking about, and none of the people in story seemed to have had much to do with what you were doing. They most interactions characters had between eachother were the few cutscenes explaining what was going on. They game had vast amounts of wasted potential.

FF13 did come along and fix a lot of the story issues, but then they threw the combat system down the toilet by making combat entirely "autobattle", making it so your level locked to certain chapters of the story, no exploration, hardly any side quests, and they story was still missing the hook to keep me interested, but I had zero expectations for 13 so I wasn't upset.

I guess I had too high of expectations for 12, and it wasn't made by the same dev. team that made FFVII and the others.

Any let down stories you guys have?

Fallout new vegas... Couldn't get into it for some reason. I guess it was because it used the same old engine as Fallout 3.

FO3. Not sure what I was expecting of it, but it did not turn out like I thought it would.

They are:

Fable
Fable II
Fable III

I thought dragon age 1 was ok, but 2 came out so fast I knew it couldn't be very good, and it wasn't. :sadvaultboy:

I have several, but first, I must comment on your disappointment. On the flipside, I loved Final Fantasy XII and it is among my favorite games of all time. XIII was a massive disappointment... an irritatingly linear and monotonous, although very pretty, disappointment.

Aside from XIII, DQ IX and its DS-focused, multiplayer stuff disappointed me, DQ X and its Wii MMO status ticks me off, I hate what I've heard of Dragon Age II, and SW:TOR just spits in this KotOR fan's face (I hate MMOs). There are probably more, but I'm not thinking of them right now.

Yea. Completely changed the game into something I regret touching. So glad I didn't buy it.

Everything... I loved the setting, I loved the gameplay, I loved the music, and aside from indifference to Vaan and Penelo, I liked the protagonists.

Deus EX: Human Revolution.

The end. The end just killed it for me. The final boss and the last bit. It was like they just kinda ran outta juice.

Ahh, LotR: Conquest.

When I saw gameplay, I said to myself, "SW:B in the LotR universe; what can go wrong?"

The single-player was fun, but the multiplayer was just ok.

Also, R.I.P. Pandemic.

I'll agree with you on the setting, they had a good background for the game. :) I really wanted to like the game, but I could not get into it, no matter how many hunts I did nor how many espers I got nor did getting all of the ultimate weapons.

At the time I started playing it, probably Oblivion. I had some pretty unrealistic expectations, and it ran like crap on my desktop. I enjoyed playing through it later, but it was hate at first sight. :P

Oh I forgot how disappointed I was with spore. I thought the game was supposed to be some new revolutionary life simulation game like the sims was.

I was wrong.

Suikoden 4. It doesn't help its case that I hadn't played 3 yet, so I was jumping there straight from 2, considered the strongest in the series and one of the best JRPG's ever made. I was expecting great things from Suikoden 4, not the awkward, stumbling mess that felt like they finished a third of the game and then suddenly ran out of time and money. I've played a lot of games that felt rushed or incomplete, and this is the worst of the lot.

Jade Empire. While I didn't feel like it was a terrible game, I was expecting quite a bit from this one as well; Bioware's previous games had been the Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights games, as well as KotOR, and nearly every review I'd seen was falling over itself in praise. Instead we have #2 on the games that felt unfinished to me, revealing a not-quite-successful to attempt to ape KotOR with shallow customization options and a poorly veiled dark/light side knockoff mechanic.

Oblivion. Though certainly not a bad game, pre-release teasers and videos promised many things that did not make it into the game. I assume this is partly why so little was revealed about Skyrim until so late into its development; there probably wouldn't be such an angry rift between Morrowind and Oblivion fans if so many of the former hadn't, like me, bought the latter expecting an entirely different game. Oblivion so disappointed me with the direction of its development versus my expectations that I haven't bought a single game at full price in the 5 1/2 years since its release, and may never do so again.

Supreme Commander 2. Not much to say. The first was lauded as a deep and complex RTS at a time when all three of those things were rare. In its popularity, the sequel was snatched up by a big name publisher and released to the tune of complaints at being a stripped down, simplified, casual-friendly shadow of the original.

Half-Life. Described as one of the best FPS games ever, save only its sequel, a game choking on its awards. Got the original, and was so bored I had to force myself to the end, and don't expect to ever play it a second time.

Jak and Daxter series. I'd like one of the most acclaimed series of platformers ever to have not-broken jumping mechanics, thanks.

I'll stop there.
