Your most disappointing game?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 5:19 pm

Morrowind.

With how everyone here made it out to be the Game of God Himself, I just didn't see the huge deal. Its a good game and all, but the hype people here make about it...

Yeah, I felt the same way. I actually went on to enjoy the game in the end, but the ludicrously excessive amount of hype almost put me off completely. And all this foolishness about "Morrowind fans vs. Oblivion fans" which persists to this day, when in fact most people who play TES are fans of both.

As much as I like Oblivion, though, one thing that disappoints is that software wise, it's the most badly written, unmaintained piece of crap I've ever used: just having another play through and the amount of crashing is absolutely insane; for the stupidest reasons, too, really basic scripting stuff, packages that lack a target and the most frequent, "because it feels like it", because they made such a total and utter mess of its memory management. It's not Gamebryo, which is often blamed, since it works just fine elsewhere, it's the complete mess that Bethesda made of it. I'm genuinely worried about Skyrim being the same or worse. (For the record, Morrowind was no better, especially Bloodmoon which is so bad it makes even Oblivion look stable.)

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising
- Honestly, I expected something more in spirit of the original milsim, instead, I got this dumbed down piece of trash with castrated mod tools. Game's dead now anyway.
ArmA2 All the way, baby!

Fallout 3
- Well.... not exactly dissapointed, I enjoyed it in its own merit(albeit with crapload of mods), but it was no Fallout for me. Maybe I am too demanding, however the game should offer more than a Wasteland Tourism which everyone here seems to be praising to heavens.

Dragon Age II
- I became a victim of the hype, I admit. Castrated story, even worse Bioware formula characters, fixed protagonist, crappy and overdone animations etc.

Morrowind. With all the hype around it from everyone else here I thought it was going to be the Half-Life of RPGs, hell even better than Half-Life + Portal + God + Metal Gear Solid.

I played it, didn't see what was so good. The combat was meant to be 10 times better than oblivion which I have to admit you don't need to be highly skilled in blade to use a blade well but its much more tactical than Morrowind's system. The AI was annoying for some things e.g. Guards won't help you if you are being chased by a bandit, Slaves stay exactly where they are when freed. Liked what was done with the voice acting, fine with the graphics. The Storyline was so boring I quit, go find these people, go grab this bow, go take this to X.

I appreciate your well-founded and well-argumented opinions. You are clearly a person of great erudition and sophistication.

Had I tried to make a reasonable argument they would just called be a JRPG hater, so I acted like a belligerent ass like the people who would respond to it normally are so they wouldn't have any reason to respond.

That's because of the TES fans that got Fallout because it's a Bethesda game. Also why the lack of it is a common complaint of New Vegas :whisper:

True. Pretty disappoting that it wasn't greater than everything else that ever existed :P

Fable 3, probably.

Unlike most people, I actually LOVED the first two games(probably because I don't pay attention to the hype-train), and was really looking forward to the third.

It turned out to be awful. Bad framerate, the "no menus" gimmick got old real fast, and the story was awful.

Spoiler
The lead up to the revolution was great, but the revolution itself svcked- what the hell? We just waltz into the castle and take it over? Bah. But what really drove me absolutely insane is why raising taxes and such to fight of AN ANCIENT HORROR COMING TO KILL EVERYONE makes you evil. What's more, why don't you(or your brother, for that matter) just freaking TELL EVERYONE that we have a year to prepare for him, and that sacrifices need to be made so...y'know....we don't get ENVELOPED BY ETERNAL DARKNESS. That kind of [censored] tends to pull people together.

In recent years it was probably New Vegas. I was sooo excited for it all and yet when I got it, it really just felt like an expansion pack for FO3. It didn't help that I just wasn't sure what I was doing with the MQ and at one point there was no indication of what to do next, so I lost interest a little bit. It was probably my fault for playing the hell out of FO3 right before it. There just wasn't enough about it that was new to hold my interest. But about a year ago I went back to it and finished it all. Enjoyed it, but I was really let down initially by how 'samish' it was. :(

Uncharted 1 and 2.

I bought the dual pack after playing through the demos. The 20 minute demos were fun.

Getting the games and realizing they were basically 8 hours each of the 20 minute demo dragged on and on was not fun.

Those games are so over-rated. I think PS3 fanbois over-rate them to try to make 360 fans jealous or something....

Bioshock 2 is another game that let me down, along with Age of Empires 3.

Its MQ reminded me a bit of Sacred 2 in that it seemed to be rather meandering, vague and incoherent. I enjoyed it well enough, but I find myself surprised at people who say what a fantastic storyline it had: FO3's wasn't that great, but NV's seemed very threadbare to me. That said, I've often been unimpressed with MQ storylines: just as well they're not typically my main reason for playing...

That's reverse logic. Had you made good arguments, I wouldn't have read your post and thought, "Hm, this sure looks like a petulant 13-year-old."

Red Dead Redemption. Not a bad game at all. Probably the best game I've ever played. But the the controls are really bad, except for the 360 version they are. I was expecting controls that weren't crappy. They just frustrated me to no end taking fun from the game itself. Another bad thing for me was herding and riding a horse. I got this game a few days ago so not too far in. Other than that, I got everthing I expected.

I think the only disappointing game I have ever played was Mercenaries 2. Im sure there is another but I don't know what. Maybe Arena. I was thinking it would be awesome to go back and play the old TES games but I couldn't do anything in Arena. Daggerfall was fun though.

Well, hey... at least Fable 3 is on the PC.

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. No runtime map creator killed that game for me. Utter shame.

Every Gran Turismo game I have ever played, they felt so methodical and boring. Grid is still the best racing game I have ever played.

I'm also pretty disappointed in some of the newer Command and Conquer games, they've become so simple and generic.

Fallout 3
If I wanted to play Oblivion with lasers and power armor, I would have modded them in.

Final Fantasy XIV
...

Final Fantasy XII
Meh. Protagonists were consistently annoying.

Final Fantasy XIII
Combat was great, linearity was not.

Resident Evil 5
Great action game, terrible Resident Evil game.

Every Silent Hill made after 4.
No. Just no. Cheap jump scares and unimaginative enemy design. The two things that made Silent Hill great were replaced with cheap jump scares and unimaginative enemy design. I want my psychological horror and imaginative enemy design back, please. Maybe Downpour will redeem the series.

RAGE
Everything was great, but with its lack of replay value its just not worth 60$.

Doom 3
WHY IS THE GRANDFATHER OF THE FPS TRYING TO BE A SURVIVAL HORROR GAME?!

Final Fantasy XIV

What svcks about this one is it has the best art direction of any Final Fantasy since FFIX. It's what I've been hoping to see in a home console Final Fantasy for years and they waste it not only on an MMO (sorry Square, but five years of Final Fantasy XI was enough), but a bad one. Bleh.

Indeed. I'm looking forward to FF XIII Versus, though. If they ever release it, that is. <_<
I'd also like to see KH III, which, thank God, should be coming some time after the release of this 3DS one. (I seem to have forgotten its name.)

Gothic 4. Because it was not a Gothic game

This.

Probably the worst game I have played to this day. I wasn't really looking forward to it, but it was still a disappointment.

Uh...isn't the unreleased Downpour the only Silent Hill after Shattered Memories?

Fallout 3

Weak story
Unbalanced leveling system
Flat characters

I traded it for DA:O and did not regret it
