So About That Cloth Map...

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 3:31 pm

You know how we were supposed to get a cloth map with the pre-order? Well, it would seem that from every unboxing I've watched all the maps have been out of paper. What the heck Bethesda!

You can see these videos in the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1247398-all-in-one-skyrim-unboxing-thread/ posted by http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/user/708850-juanhbk1/.

I would have just pre-ordered it off Steam if I had known that it would just be some cheap piece of paper.

Actually Pete Hines confirmed a long time ago that the map is paper made to look like Burlap.....

If you had read the thread you would know that that point has been made several times before. Your argument is that since they did not either pre-order it or go to the store to pick it up, they will not get the premium map.

1) It's not like they randomly received a copy. They would have had to sign up in some way, shape or form to receive an early copy. You're making the assumption that it's just a normal copy. That's fine, I guess, if you have evidence to back you-- evidence that you have failed to provide. 2) I have pre-ordered from Amazon. Amazon will be giving me a "premium" map. Ta-da! I don't have to go to the store or nuthin'! 3) Please provide sources and/or evidence before you make declarative statements. 4) I didn't realize I was freaking out. People who insert phrases like "For the Love of God" seem to be having more of an emotional response than I would say I am having. Thank you for your time.

Lets see some evidence that they got the pre-order collectors edition then.

(it works both ways)

Real cloth would have been far too expensive. Nice for the fans, but not so nice for Bethesda's income.

where i live i pre-ordered it and asked if i get a burlap-paper map and they said, "no, just the steelbook case." but still, meh, no complaints, there's gonna be maps in the collector's edition guide im getting for christmas so it's not a huge deal. I wonder what the steelbook will be like though..... do they just toss the regular game box in the steel one or does it actually replace the regular case and hold the discs, etc.? hmm guess i'll find out friday :P

I have one, I'd describe it like a paper version of a paint canvas. Basically if you have a painting lying around, go touch the canvas, it feels like that. Except its paper so you can rip it, which differs from paint canvas which you can't rip.

The material is definitely better than the regular paper games usually print maps on though because those always rip at the creases. This one wont rip as easily but if you purposely tried rip it, it'd be a piece of cake... if that made sense.

On some of the unboxing videos posted on YT you can see the map and it does look nice and thick. It's not as fancy as cloth but it still looks really good quality and much better than regular paper. I would happily take it over a regular version any day!

I have a feeling the quality of the map will be similar to that of the Oblivion 5th anniversary edition map. Its made out of nicer paper then posters, and is slightly textured to the touch (on one side). Its not a bad map, but its unfortunate the back has no texturing and is bright white. At the end of the day, it is disappointing that the map is not cloth (i was originally under this impression as well... damn misinformed EB Games employee haha) but the map we will be getting is of fine quality if it is going to be made of the material i think it is, and will look great in a cheap poster frame hanging on my rec room wall.

It is burlap paper. This is what burlap paper looks like
http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-129235665318922_2174_444276319

This is what burlap fabric looks like
http://www.fabricbuy.co.uk/buy/BR-006/Burlap_Corn

We will be getting this on burlap paper, which is a type of paper, not fabric

Add shredded burlap to paper pulp to make a flexible paper that resists tearing: http://www.ehow.com/about_4614736_burlap-crafts.html

It's not so hard to understand.

(it works both ways)

I never said they had the pre-order collector's edition. Please read. (it really doesn't work both ways).

Except for the part where they never said it would be either of those things.

They actually did. Please read earlier pages in this thread for confirmation.

The map everyone gets is the same one I got when I bought the game,it is made from paper, a burlap - not fabric or cloth.
This came with the game which the shops call "special edition" or "limited edition" .
So far no Normal or Standard editions in the shops here and I was informed by the shop assistant that there wouldn't be such a thing.
All the pre-order people would have had their (not so) special maps anyway and in effect received no bonus.

They NEVER said cloth map. The EXACT words were 'Premium Material' people just jumped to the conclusion that premium material meant CLOTH OMG CLOTH CLOTH. Its just high quality paper

It's not made of burlap, though. It's like burlap.

PLEASE READ THE THREAD. IT'S NO SO HARD TO DO. :banghead:
But they didn't. There is a tweet that says "it's not paper because we never said it was paper" (paraphrased)

Also I'm pretty sure I've been on this thread before. If not this one then another one. So this page is pretty much just a repeat of every other page in the thread.

Again, NEVER was it said by Bethesda that it was made out of CLOTH. They said that it was a premium material that feels like burlap.

Never
once
said
it
was
cloth.

Media outlets may have, but they were wrong.

I believe you'll receive both a premium map and a standard paper map with pre-order. That includes CE and the standard pre-order. Sorry if someone already mentioned this.

No, you wont.

For us who pre-ordered the game through Steam, will we receive any map at all? A digital map or something?

Why do people keep thinking it's cloth? I realised it wasn't pretty much when they announced it.

Thank you.

Also, as far as I know, no map for Steam versions. But if you buy the CE game guide, you get access to an online interactive map.
