So About That Cloth Map...

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 1:17 am

Oh for the love of god don't say the 'c' word relating to the map in these forums. You'll be torn to shreds
The map is allegedly made from Burlap, called Hessian in my neck of the woods, and is a 'woven fabric' which roughly translates to 'cloth' in my neck of the woods, like a vacuum cleaner is generally, wrongly referred to as a 'Hoover'.
Ah yes, brand dilution...companies LOVE that. Like how all carbonated beverages/soda are Cokes, all window sprays are Windex, all tissue papers are Kleenex, the act of searching for something is "Googling..." :)

The map is made out of............................
Spoiler
People!!!!!!!!!!
Soylent Green!
That is such an awesome movie! I wonder if the map will be green and more tastier than the other colored versions...

Yes, but from videos it's nothing like that. It looks like poster paper. The descriptions these people got were that they were like *spoiler* poster paper. People are making arguments in this thread that they didn't get the pre-order copy so they wouldn't get the premium map. So, if that's the case will we get a map regardless of whether or not we preordered? I have a feeling they just pulled that info out of their hats unless one of the unboxing videos said explicitly "This is not a pre-ordered copy." I guess all we can do at this point is wait and see if the map is a piece of papery [censored] or legitimately decent quality.
It's gonna be card stock or thick and/or textured paper or whatever...this is what I predict. I think the last cloth map I got was from an old Ultima game. Or something around that time period. Of course, that was when many games came with a bunch of cool junk in them and the boxes were big enough to fit two two-tonne trucks in for only a manual, some trinkets and the game media. :)

honestly I prefer the idea of the burlap style maps since it'd be a little barrier.I have a cloth map from dragon age and its threads are coming off on the edges and just is not durable, while this ones seem so. Premium=\= cloth

Would a better question be is not having a cloth map going to affect your enjoyment of the game? Because honestly I could care less what the map is made of; I have all kinds of special edition games with maps of cloth; paper; little widgets and toys. All sounded so cool when I got it but now its just more cr*p laying around in my study. I won't be able to display it; my wife is in charge of decorating so I'll only be stealing furtive glances at the map. So, again, I don't care what it is made of; perhaps if the game is not so important to you as the map, why not have a cloth map made? Take your paper map to a seamstress and have her weave you a map of extreme beauty; then, do some shots of it and post them here. Lord it over us in all its cloth-ly beauty. We'll try not to kill ourselves out of envy. Everybody wins.

YES! IT WILL! I will hate the game and curse Zeni/Beth for not including a cloth map! No...er, wait a second...on second thought, I might open the map once to check it out initially. I'd then fold it back up and put it back in the case and never take it out again. So really, I don't care what it's made of. Unless... I'd care if it was made from dog poo or something. But otherwise, no.

But is Todd going to burn all the maps with a blowtorch again? That's what makes a quality map, not whether it's cloth or paper! :flamethrower:

Isn't burlap a type of cloth? I mean, isn't cloth just a generic descriptor for something? There's cotton cloth, wool cloth, etc. etc. If the map is, in fact, made out of burlap (It isn't, by the way. It's "like burlap".) then it would it not be cloth?

Also, how can something be like burlap?

You've made the assumption that I think (and, in extension, whoever agrees with me) the game is less important than the map that comes with it. Read the thread before posting. Or don't, it's rather amusing when people make themselves look silly. Also, I suggest wearing the pants in your relationship.

BGS/Zeni should just put out feelers to see what sort of demand there'd be for cloth maps purchased separately from the games and just sell them for like $10-15 a pop if the interest is there.

@ CFx I don't think the maps are worth that much.

"It's not cloth it's kind of a textured paper"

Does textured paper feel like burlap? Hrmmm.

It's high quality paper that they said feels like burlap. A lot of leather-bound, high quality notebooks use them.

You know how we were supposed to get a cloth map with the pre-order? Well, it would seem that from every unboxing I've watched all the maps have been out of paper. What the heck Bethesda!

You can see these videos in the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1247398-all-in-one-skyrim-unboxing-thread/ posted by http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/user/708850-juanhbk1/.

I would have just pre-ordered it off Steam if I had known that it would just be some cheap piece of paper.
Yeah, they never said it was going to be "cloth." Because it's not. Like everyone else has said, it's a synthetic burlap material with the map printed on it. Not a cheap piece of paper. Not the glossy paper that you'd normally get.

Yeah, I just picked that price point because I was feeling a corporate price gouging mood. I'm sure they'd do some study to find out what the best price point is to maximize profits before releasing a product... Not saying they'd release a cloth map... But anyhow, yeah, I saw a different unboxing earlier and you don't really even have to hear them say anything about the map to see/hear that it's very papery when they manipulate it...either that, or it's some cloth that's like 95% starch and 5% cloth or something. (Also, I didn't get tricked by the "-like" modifier they put on the description before they figured out that it tricked too many people and changed it to "premium physical map" or whatever retailers are calling it now...)

Thanks for the timestamp 'cuz I woulda vomited if I had to watch too much more of that idiot waving the camera about. He should use/get a tripod or use/get a webcam or if he can't afford one sell some of that stuff or pawn his baby and make videos that are less amateur... Sorta funny how he was avoiding showing all the junk on his kitchen counter and his Multigrain Cheerios for the longest time. :)

I know right?! That guy was trying to rip off tape with one hand, while filming in the other for a solid unedited 2 minutes. We're just sitting here watching him thumb at a piece of cardboard with less coordination than the whiny little sack he called his son xD

Yeah, it must've been his first time making a video of anything, unboxing or not, because most people aren't that incompetent. I bet a quadriplegic 95 year old with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's and narcolepsy could've made a better one.

Anyhow, his video brought back bad memories of the night watching The Blair Witch Project immediately after having just eaten a greasy Carl's Jr. Burger and some fries...

Then him knocking the box over reminded me of this poor guy:

I'm pretty sure that's false. Unless you have a source (that is reliable) I'm just going to make an assumption that that is not true. That would suggest that anyone who preordered it on Amazon would not get a map (which we will, according-- you know, amazon.)

Just a heads up, I just checked the preorder page for the PS3 version, and the "premium physical map" bonus is not listed under PS3 anymore, just Xbox and PC.....What's up with that?

There never was a "cloth" map, the last information I got was a shower curtain like material, but Bethesda themselves never officially claimed "cloth"

Review sites took the statement "burlap feel" from Bethesda and wrote it in their reviews as "cloth map".

I too was svcked in to believe for a week or so that I would be receiving an actual cloth map :(

From the videos I've seen it definitely seems like paper. It flaps around exactly like paper, making those sounds. In the IGN unboxing the guy even said: 'This may seem like cloth or some other material, but it isn't. It's paper.' That's a loose paraphrase but carries the same meaning.

Even just by looking at the videos in the link I provided in my OP, it looks obviously like paper.

It annoys me when a product is marketed dishonestly. And the inconsistent answers people are giving just further suggests this. Some people are saying that you only get the cloth map in the CE. Others are saying there is no cloth map at all. I mean, even in that link "The Elder Scrolls V 5 Skyrim Game + Premium Cloth Map PS3". On other sites like Amazon it says "Premium physical map". Ridiculous.

You do realize that those videos are just the reviewers getting their versions right? They haven't preordered, they're just given a basic version to review. You guys keep referring to these videos as if they just went into Gamestop and picked it up. Of course it looks like paper, IT IS paper. That's the basic map that ALL versions of the game come with. You get the Cloth/Burlap/Burlap Lke/Premium/Whatever map separately. The stores are given a batch to hand out to those that preorder. And when online sites say "it is included in the package" that's if you order ONLINE and have it MAILED to you. The "Package" includes whatevers in the Envelope/Box that they send you, which will be the Game, with its basic map inside, and the additional Premium map.

For the Love of God, stop freaking out for the sake of freaking out! Go find something productive to do while you wait for the Release Day.

If you had read the thread you would know that that point has been made several times before. Your argument is that since they did not either pre-order it or go to the store to pick it up, they will not get the premium map.

1) It's not like they randomly received a copy. They would have had to sign up in some way, shape or form to receive an early copy. You're making the assumption that it's just a normal copy. That's fine, I guess, if you have evidence to back you-- evidence that you have failed to provide. 2) I have pre-ordered from Amazon. Amazon will be giving me a "premium" map. Ta-da! I don't have to go to the store or nuthin'! 3) Please provide sources and/or evidence before you make declarative statements. 4) I didn't realize I was freaking out. People who insert phrases like "For the Love of God" seem to be having more of an emotional response than I would say I am having. Thank you for your time.
