So About That Cloth Map...

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 6:08 am

Okay, just looked it up on google.

Hessian (pronounced /?h?si.?n/) (or burlap in the US) is a woven fabric usually made from skin of the jute plant or sisal fibres, or may be combined with other vegetable fibres to make rope, nets, and similar products. Gunny cloth is similar.\

ehm, now I'm confused. Is it or isn't it cloth?

Paper, paper, paper, paper the map is Paper

Burlap = a type of cloth
Paper = Paper

This is from the article listed above
We’ve received plenty of questions about the map. So you know, it’s a high-grade material that has a feel similar to burlap, and will be available in North America and European territories. There will be a regular paper map included in all copies of the game, but if you want to get the premium map, we recommend pre-ordering the game.

Ah, now I understand it. Missed that little bit. Thanks. Got a bit confused because I didn't know what Burlap was, looked it up and got even more confused. That clears it up. Thanks for the quick reply.

Its premium cloth paper thats actually burlap with a little bit of oak on the side and its been processed through refining plants 500 times to strengthen the fabric so it can be even stronger then fax paper and has been recycled to cotton and mixed with some materials scientists have been studying for the past 10million years with close inspection and has thus produced and been named:

"Premium Physical Paper"

Why does that sound to me that those who get the game early will get two maps?
Wouldn't that create some confusion if you get the premium map instead of the original that i have read on these forum?

Right Daphne, I take it to mean the map will be more durable than regular paper and probably nicer for framing as well.

It may not actually be cloth judging from what other people are saying on here, but it sounds like it's definitely not going to be paper either.

There was a post on this the other day. From what I understand, when you pre-order the game and go to pick it up, you are given the sealed game PLUS the premium map. The premium maps are delivered in a stack to the game stores and handed out with the pre-orders. So any video of someone opening the sealed game won't contain the premium map. To be clear (again, from my understanding), you will receive the premium map in addition to the sealed game box. So yes, you will actually have two maps: one premium you were given, and one crappy paper one that came inside your sealed game box.

From the videos I've seen it definitely seems like paper. It flaps around exactly like paper, making those sounds. In the IGN unboxing the guy even said: 'This may seem like cloth or some other material, but it isn't. It's paper.' That's a loose paraphrase but carries the same meaning.

Even just by looking at the videos in the link I provided in my OP, it looks obviously like paper.

It annoys me when a product is marketed dishonestly. And the inconsistent answers people are giving just further suggests this. Some people are saying that you only get the cloth map in the CE. Others are saying there is no cloth map at all. I mean, even in that link "The Elder Scrolls V 5 Skyrim Game + Premium Cloth Map PS3". On other sites like Amazon it says "Premium physical map". Ridiculous.

No. From the descriptions i've read this premium map feels a lot like money, but it's not "cloth" or "burlap" it "feels like burlap."

I'm pretty sure money is technically cloth, as it is made from cotton and linen. I guess it depends on the fibers used.

I don't really see what the big deal is either honestly. Personally I don't care at all about the map. If there is a map that interests me it is the poster size map in the strategy guide, since I am sure it will have much more detail, i.e. poi's, outposts etc and more importantly the online interactive map that comes with the guide since I play on PC so I can keep it up on my other monitor.

Its only in the preorder copies. THEY WERENT THE PREORDER COPIES.

Let me highlight the key points:

1) The preimum map is only in the pre-order copies

2) The copies viewd in the unboxing were not pre-order copies

I personally just wanted the cloth map over the usual poster-esque maps that generally are shipped with games because of the indentations that are left in the paper when unfolding it, leaving it to look like it has a grid on it. But, more importantly, I made this thread because it seems to me that they marketed it dishonestly. A lot of people I've talked to didn't think they were going to get a cloth map-- they knew. I had to disprove them with the videos that have recently been posted. But, as you said, it's just a map-- by no means important in the sense of the content we should receive in the actual game.

No worries, i can fully appreciate some people would like a cloth map, to me personally it's not a big deal either way, and that meant more as a general statement, not directed at you.

I understand that point. You're reiterating a point that has already been made in this thread. Thanks, though.

...and I am extremely annoyed by people who do not read carefully and then say a product was 'marketed dishonestly' just because some people are a little slower on the uptake then others and remain confused.

...and I could have sworn I have been reading fairly carefully. If I had known that multiple people having separate information on the topic made them slow I guess there are a lot of "slow" people in the world. But, I appreciate your condescension, really. It means the world.

Do you just ignore everyting you hear?

No, I don't ignore everything I hear.

Ya. I understand. I find it funny when people try to make personal attacks on my own and others' intelligence because we had read information separate from their own findings.

And on the map there is not a lot of details it looks like Oblivion map, Morrowind map was really cool and detailed.
Indeed. The Morrowind map was really nice. I'd rather a nice detailed paper map than a boring cloth thinghy. Oh well... no biggie.

That's why I'm getting the game off of Steam. Well one of the reasons... :P

Actually... it's been said that they could also show up in regular copies as well. It's until their supply runs out. So some lucky individuals could still receive a premium map in a non-pre-order version.
