Anyone disappointed with the voice acting?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 1:45 am

I wouldn't say I'm disapointed because some voice acting is really good, but the other day I'm play Skyrim, theiving it up, and I heard someone use the same voice as another character. I can't remember the details but this time it just felt more significant that other times and it kind of killed my imersion and experience for about a minute.

Not enough variance in voices.

I'm only disappointed that all guards have the same voice, just like in Oblivion.
Other than that, voice acting is great!

I certainly am disappointed with the amount of recorded dialog. The voices themselves sound good enough.

I love the voice acting, but the overdone Nordic accent (Thonar/Farengar) is so obvious from a European standpoint. I know Norwegians sound like - they do not all have lisps or talk through their noses.

...but some of the voice acting is just terrible, not believable at all sometimes. There were time where I could tell that the actor was reading from a script.

Yeah, Joan Allen's for one. She's a fantastic screen actor, but her performance for Skyrim was flat and uninspired. On the other hand, I felt Karliah and Astrid were great performances. The best was Prarthurnax. Great, great performance IMO.

I have never been to Disneyland. Max von Sydow's voice is anonymous to me. Claims of text providing exponentially more dialog opportunities are likely exponentially exaggerated.

^^^^^^^

I thought the voices in Skyrim were exponentially better than any other VA'd game I'd played when the scale of NPC's was considered. For one, it was a huuuuuuuuge improvement over Oblivion.

Generally satisfied with it. One thing that got on my nerves a bit, though: Accents. Not their presence, on the contrary I was thrilled when I started up the game and heard the Nords speaking in a vaguely Scandinavian accent. But their application from that point on is inconsistant. Which gets on my nerves a smidge. When I hear American Nords or English Imperials I can't help but grit my teeth. (It's Cor-van-yund, not Cor-van-joond! You're supposed to be a sodding native!) I'd rather they work out which race/nation speaks with what accent and stick to it, unless the character calls for something different; the Dunmer raised by Argonians, for example.

A pedantic quibble, I know. And by no means exclusive to TES. But still. Gah.

I think the voice acting has improved since Oblivion. I think it's pretty good for a TES game.

Not enough variance in voices.

This ^^

They should try re-using voice recordings from previous games for guards, etc. May require adjustment of script lines, but that would be better than constanly hearing same voices speaking

I like the voice acting, I just hate how NPC's say the exact same thing whenever I walk by. It's like they're all broken records.

The acting doesn't seem that bad. They need to be consistent with their accents, both whitin this game and between games. (right after they bin the american argonians of course..)

Someone mentioned Ulfric here. The voice of this actor itself is good, but I cannot make much of it. It sounds to me like the Jarl of Windhelm and leader of the Stormcloaks is also working as a director of a post office. It is a deep voice alright, but dull and bored, too. I fail to believe that he can inspire people to fight for his cause. His voice sounds like he could not even get a dog to bark.
You need to listen to him in different contexts. He's not flat at all. If you don't do his quests or listen to the pvssyr, though, you only get his official "don't bother me" voice.

Overall, the voice acting is fine, if a bit repetitous.
But Mjoll sounds like Mrs. Olsen from the old Folger's coffee commercials. Every time i see her, I expect to hear her say "It's mountain grown" =P

Overall the voice acting is major step up from Oblivion which is a plus.

I do not see the point in getting big name actors, it cost more money that would be better spent on more diversity in the dialogue, or they could have put that money to use improving the game in other ways.

i have to voice my opinion:

who cares if voice acting is good or not? it takes away nothing from gameplay. i loved the voice acting in 2worlds1 and oblivion and morrowind and fallout3. made me laugh. poor voice acting is meaningless to me. it doesn't change the fact that i still can't decorate my house or the dialogue lacks depth or there is no character creation.

it's trivial and worthless.

To each his or her own, I say.

That said, I can speak with some experience with voice acting. I am currently doing some voice overs for idomeneas, the developer of the "Quest & Legends" mod for Dragon Age Origins. Therefore, I can safely say that part of the problem, for me at least, is the writing. I can memorize a line of dialogue and when it comes to recording it, it more often than not comes out differently. Part of that I believe is how I speak in sentences normally. Like many Americans I don't actually speak proper English. I have lived in various parts of the country all of my life and have picked up accents and colloquialisms. (Born and raised in Vermont, lived in Florida, Arizona and now Portland, Oregon,) To that end, I have an instinctive way of saying certain words and phrases and the like: and, it all seems natural to me. Currently I am playing a Snooty Nobleman, which my friends say I shouldn't have a problem with.

In Skyrim there is way to much of Arnold Swarchenegger speak. It otherwise absolutely annoys me death. If we get technical here, "how does an Austrian-American accent fit into Skyrim anyway?"
