Anyone disappointed with the voice acting?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 3:04 am

Personally, it doesn't matter to me. Reason is probably I don't role play a lot, if at all, and I don't pay any attention to how a voice sounds - unless it's really obnoxious.

And, as long as I hear a male/female voice when there's a male/female talking, it's ok. I pay more attention to background (or game) noises, like hearing the music start in when a dragon is about to attack, wolves/bears growling, etc. So voices are kind of secondary to me.

The only problem I have with it is that it lacks strong emotion. That may be more the fault of the writers, though.

well i think voice acting is one of the things that is better in skyrim then previous elder scrolls games.
They have more different accents.

This is the internet.

You would have gotten the desired result a lot faster if you'd simply titled your thread "Don't you think the Voice Acting in "Skyrim" is great"?

Sure, laziness. Have you actually worked on voicing a game? Because you should try that to understand why developers are "lazy" if you can't do it on the spot.

It's not too difficult in a mod. I don't know about from scratch. When I had a gamer oriented PC I used to add dialogue and voice to my game for personal use all the time as I was unhappy with the same old same old not much. (good at impersonation and used to using a recording studio).

I think it's just for convenience they don't enlarge the vocabulary.

I like the voice acting in Skyrim, even the voices I used to hate to begin with. (Like the Whiterun mage). There is certainly more variation than Oblivion and Morrowind. That has to be a positive!

I personally think that voice acting has limitations on how npcs can elaborate more on the specific situation, rather than have a generic all around dialog with a few specifics detailing that quest. Take for instance the choices you have when you have a system like morrowind where you can initiate and investigate more into dialog from multiple npc's. That way when you get into the mechanics of storyline you find that there is more potential for less effort.

My only grip with Text Dialogue are the "Encyclopedia NPCs"...
And even with Text Dialogue many (Really, Many) NPCs just say the exactly same thing about the exactly same subjects.
Also, talking with some NPCs was a chore due to the many useless "talking options". "No... I don't want to hear about the St. Olmens Canton AGAIN."

Apart from that, it was a good system.

Now, about Skyrim... Well... I Like it. :D

I accept that in this modern RPG age voice acting is probably necessary, but some of it in Skyrim had me cringing. Mehrunes Dagon sounds exactly like the elevator host in Disneyland's Haunted Mansion. The old Blades member is so obviously Max von Sydow it immediately takes me out of the fantasy immersion. That is not to say all voice acting is bad, most of the stuff in the Winterhold College was good. Alduin sounded pretty badass too.

I guess with text you had the option of (1) imagining any kind of voice you wanted on an npc, and (2) exponentially more dialogue opportunities.

A minor issue to an otherwise great game though.

Esbern was awesome. I like the voice acting in Skyrim a lot in general. EDIT: That said though, if I had a choice I would vote for returning to text based dialogue with only big scenes having voice over, regardless of the fact that i think the voice actors did a fine job I could live without them and enjoy the game more actually.

My gripe with it is they abused the good work the voice actors for the townsfolk did by making them repeat their [censored] spiel every time I get within 10 feet of them. Maybe they should just say "hi" or nod their heads and save the exposition for when the player actually engages them in conversation.

What about Karliah? I love her voice *_*!

Actually hers was one of the few bits of monologue that grabbed me in the game. The actress did a very good job.

I think the voice acting is a marked improvement over past TES games. Very well done IMHO.

I wish every single npc didn't feel compelled to unload their one canned comment every single time my character ran within 10 feet of them. And I really hate the npc's that are within ten feet of you when crafting. Non stop inane banter. In Oblivion you had to be right up in someone's face to trigger their speech. In Skyrim you get even somewhat close and...

Just running up the street in Whiterun, from the gate to the Inn:

"The gods gave you two hands and you use them both to wield your weapon. I can respect.."
"I don't claim to be the best blacksmith in Whiterun..."
"I help my mom sell fruits and vegetables..."
"You ever do mercenary work? Might suit you..."
"Come to say hello to an old lady, do your good deed for the day?"
"Do you eveer get to the Cloud District? What am I saying, of course you don't"
"The problem with Skyrim is everyone is obsessed with death."
"Keep your hands to yourself sneak thief." [<--btw, my character has used sneak once, has committed no crimes, but might have, by accident, read a book that increased sneak one level]

All that, just trying to get to the darned inn.

And, yet, strangely enough, aside from a few canned conversations and script/story points, no one seems to talk to each other. Certainly not spontaneously. It's eerie. Like everyone in every town and every village is waiting for you to appear, else they are mute.

Actually, I was just thinking how great the voice-acting is. Most of the Nords get the accent just right, and so do the Khajiit. The dunmer voices are kind of a let down, but that's because I'm comparing them to the rasping voices of Morrowind's dunmers, which was awesome... All in all, most of the voice actors did good, some did great, and a few did okay.

I disagree, the voice acting was great. I mean, sure, I'd rather each guard had a unique voice, but they didn't bother me so much that I'd call it a negative. And I am confused why anyone would be complaining about the use of an established actor as one of the voices? Some of you are actually calling having someone like Max Von Sydow, a man who has played chess with death himself, a negative to your game experience?
No, you are not the only one.

Everything's fine in my game. The problem is at your end.

I second that, I played the game with some decent headphones, I never had problems of sound, in fact I had opposite experience - it was pretty amazing.

And here, I disagree - this game does a terrific job of having NPCs engage in relatively superficial conversation. Yes, I'm probably as tired of hearing everyone's trigger speech as you are, but I have never seen a game make such great attempt at seemingly random conversation between NPCs. Maybe because I'm sneaking so much, that I hear them more?

I think the voice acting is very good to be honest. Shop keepers etc should say more rather than repeat one or two lines though.

There is alot of good voice acting in my opinion. The people who play brynjolf, jarl balgruuf and cicero are exellent in my opinion...the guy who plays cicero was 5 star to be honest...he was exellent.

Voice acting is fine. Im just puzzled why they made differenrt NPC's say the same lines. Why get more voice actors just to repeat lines other NPC's say? ugh.

Why shouldn't Max von Sydow sound like Max von Sydow?

I thought the voice acting was excellent, they just needed to hire a couple extra Nord VAs. I don't care about famous names in video games as long as the voices are good, but for marketing that's needed I guess.

Casting Vladimir Kulich= all is forgiven

The voice acting is pretty good overall, the problem is repetition. I blame whomever was in charge.

90% of the people you meet, whether townsfolk, followers, bandits, or Jarls have the voice of either:
- Arnold guard
- Russian girl guard
- Vilkas / Balgruuf (accent guy)
- Farkas (deep voice guy)
- Lydia
- Ysolda
- Carlotta
- Belethor
So we hear the same 12 voices for all the hundreds of people in Skyrim, and occasionally there's a unique voice. The other 60 actors have small bit parts that we only encounter rarely.

The other repetition problem is recording the exact same words verbatim for different actors. You can blame money, disk space, or programming complexity, but really there is no excuse other than laziness.

the repetition is all on beth.

overall, i want less voice acting except for major questlines and added text with depth.

If they can't put depth into their voiced dialogue, you think they can put it into text dialogue?

yes, i do.
in morrowind, i often load a game and just read books and dialogue. then, reload.

but, if they continue in this direction, no, probably not.

edit- in skyrim, at least we have the quality book reading back. so maybe there's hope...

Personally, I often felt like Morrowind read more like a hyperlinked encyclopedia than dialogue.
