Are people not buying this game just because of Steam?

Well I do agree with your general point about the direction of Capitalism and the rise of Global Corporatism...the USA is fast becoming a fascist police state. I share your concerns and alarm. But i want to play Skyrim and Steam is required so I accept and adapt. I will make my stand and fight the good fight elsewhere.
Also...even in a perfect world I would not quibble with digital distribution...I really do think it's an excellent way to distribute a game.
And long strings are an excellent way to distribute fish food... if one completely ignores the barbed hook it is attached to and the guy on the other end turning the reel.

In essence... all I'm saying is that Steam would work well enough IF it didn't gather usage data, didn't restrict how we can play the game, and indeed was JUST a means of getting hold of the games easily.

SO.... until I can get my hands on a somehow modified version of Steam that fixes those nasty barbs and hooks... I'm not gonna touch it.

Physical copies are going nowhere...
And that's exactly what I like about them.

Some people are just resistant to change. When the old LP vinyl music albums were being retired from store shelves, people came up with all kinds of excuses why vinyl was somehow better and more authentic. Then people didn't want to give up their cassette players, because they had so many music cassettes. Music CDs are now rapidly becoming outdated as iPods and MP3 players are the norm for music.

Games and services like Steam are no different. People just are having a hard time coping with the fact that a physical CD is no longer necessary or even that efficient. As more people gain access to high-speed internet, digital distribution will become the norm.
Vinyl IS better when speaking of audio fidelity... It's just not great for random access.
And a physical CD has little to do with it* ~Gog doesn't give a CD, and I've bought 72 games from them in 2½ years; I have 6 Steam titles not counting free ones and gifts.

*(It does matter for some.. I still have the box Fallout came in, and the cd).
