Better 'current' RPG's than Skyrim list them here.

Dragon Knight Saga, otherwise known earlier as Divinity II, Ego Draconis is a pretty good game with loads of quests and a large world, non-linear for the most part, good varieties of loot, interesting crafting and awesome music.

you play a role you don't play yourself in RPG's XD
Dont flame me, but in my view Halo reach put you in YOUR role, of course its a Fps so it dosent count.

Look at bow or magic combat. Hid behind wall, pop out, shoot target, take cover again, wash-rinse-repeat. It's all about setting the target in the cross-hair and letting go of the trigger. Exactly like Call of Duty. And you could go through the entire game that way. I guess Skyrim is a fps. The only thing your stats in the game seem to affect is your damage, and the ability to slow down time. Kinda like auto-aim.

Except it's not.

There's a huge difference in gameplay.

Why would you even compare it to RPGs? Why don't you compare it to other Action Adventure? Anyway as long as the thread is here Mass Effect 2 (and 2 is a step back from 1 so it's not a high bar). Better sandbox games exist too Red Dead Redemption blows skyrim out of the water for a GTA based game to have more choice and NPC development is kind of sad.

Both Witcher 1 and 2, DA:Origins, and even Deus Ex were far better RPGs. Even if you are "given" a character, at least, your choices make some kind of difference in how the game plays out. In Skyrim, you are basically given a role as well, even if you get to name your character. All characters basically play through the game in almost exactly the same way. Only the choice of combat style is any different.

Indeed, yo uare always the Dragonborn, you then are given a linear set of quests that have no effect in the game world to choose to complete in the order you wish. skyrim isn't really what I would consiter a "good" or even RPG in the first place. Depends on how far back you consiter "current" but NWN 2 and MoTB Expansion for it, are very good too.

We don't need that at all.

RPG suffices.
Clearly it doesn't, since I've never seen anyone agree on what RPG means. If people communicated what they meant by the term, there would be less confusion and fewer arguments. In any case, if that's your argument, I assume you think 'open world', 'linear', and 'sandbox' are also redundant terms. As well as 'action RPG'.

You have to classify games.
Yes. But we're only allowed to classify them the way you want us to, it seems. What are we going to do when you're not around?

yeah, there's just definitions all over the place. lol, there's vamp masquerade people who thumb their noses at anything less than live roleplaying. apparently, playing a "role" to them is equivalent to being in theater, like they're marlon brando or something.

Mass Effect 1 had a better and more epic story, but many of the "traditional" RPG elements in Mass Effect 1 were totally stupid. For example the 10 tiers of weapons and armor.

The great thing about Skyrim, TES in general, and gamesas, is that they allow us to infuse our personalities in the game with the Dev kit. To the point that we can actually shape it the way we want. If you've got talent, and time, the creative potential is endless. That's why Skyrim will be on the top of my best RPG list for a long time. Right below Witcher 2.

Vampire Masquerade: Bloodlines was a great rpg too. It had some of the best rping scenarios ever. But it was buggy as [censored], and it was released terribly unfinished. If you could get by that, it was a pretty decent game.

Two Worlds and Two Worlds 2 are amazing imo, I loved Two Worlds back in the day, the second one is even better, some disagree but each to their own, I really enjoy it.

I've never played ANY RPG less Railroaded than The Elder Scrolls games. Especially no Tabletop RPG.

You are lacking in experience with tabletop RPGs then.

No computer game can even approach the freedom of a tabletop RPG.

I play Skyrim and Two Worlds II and I love both of them. TW2 isn't better than Skyrim, but it does have one thing Skyrim doesn't: spell creation. :whistling:

DAO and Witcher 2 beat it story, character and lore wise, Skyrim has the best enviroment , graphics and gameplay,

All three are first class imo.

I didn't mean the main character, though. I mean't the world. The Witcher 2 world felt more authentic and lived in.... Skyrim's felt sort of open and empty, oddly devoid of character.
It's detailed, but far too many blind walls and corridors.

Yeah agree about weapons etc but 1 had way more to do. 2 is all about team mission, team mission, team mission.

See I don't get you here, unless your talking about mods. Skyrim story and quests leave you with zero impact and changes on the world. You litterally CAN NOT fail any of the quests you have little to no Choices and concequences and so on. The world litterally starts and end the same no matter what you do. thats a horrible RPG in my book.

I have a bunch of "failed quests" in Skyrim. So much for that assertation.

Final Fantasy XIII-2

Is that out yet?

I liked XIII, but I won't mention it here. Looking forward to the changes in XIII-2 though.

Quick question on FONV.

If you spawned one of the .50 cal sniper rifles in the docs office at char creation could a fresh outta the grave char take down the deathclaws blocking the direct route to Vegas?
Conversely could a fully decked char take a deathclaw down with a rifle you get at the start?

Haven't liked a J-rpg style game since FF7. And I just svck terribly at them. Loved Dark Souls and Demon Souls, but they're a different animal, altogether.
