Better 'current' RPG's than Skyrim list them here.

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 5:15 pm

I've had my problems with the game it's no secret but I have to say currently there is no better RPG than Skyrim. It blows FONV out of the water and pretty much everything else in recent years too.

I love openworld RPG's and good ones are really hard to come by so despite the awful buildings and villages which look like I could have drawn them myself while under the influence and the awful voice-overs I still really like the game and am of the opinion it is currently unrivalled as the best RPG available.

I reserve the right however to moan about this and that and the other because it's not perfect and thank God for that or I would have nothing to complain about.

I don't think there are any current RPG's that compete with Skyrim. (in my opinion)

For me it does and I really liked FONV. It doesn't have the strong characters and storylines FONV had but the actual world is a lot more enjoyable to live in just my opinion of course. A best of both would be an ideal RPG but let's face it that's never going to happen.

Wish people wouldn't say that final part.

Have you played the previous Elder Scrolls games? They're also quite fun and did a good job building immersive worlds in their respective times.

That's tough for me to say, since I feel that yes Skyrim is an excellent RPG, but it excels at doing certain things that other RPGs don't do as well, but other RPGs do other things better. Like, in my view Skyrim and Mass Effect 2 are on an equal plane. I love Skyrim for its world and the freedom it offers, but I also love Mass Effect 2 (and 1) for the driving storyline and compelling characters.

A best of both worlds would be ideal, but so far it hasn't happened yet.

Demon/Dark Souls.... superior in combat at least. Story is sparse though.

Morrowind is my all-time best RPG ever with Planescape Torment a close second. Oblivion was great but not brilliant. Skyrim is better than I thought it would be but not a patch on either but still better than anything else around.

Witcher 2.

Far too contrived for me and no role-playing involved at all oh wait I'm The Witcher that's the end of that then I'll just see how things pan out for him. Not for me.

I had a better time playing the Witcher 2. It had more personality in the prologue then Skyrim had in the entire game. Baldur's Gate 2 is still the best rpg.

Witcher 2 is Geralt's story not yours. No discernible magic system too which blows for me. It's an action adventure not an RPG imo. Deus Ex is also an action game now with a bit of stealth. Lost its way completely since the first one. I hated it.

Witcher 2, Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age: Origins all beat it hands down when it comes to dialogue at least.

Well, to be fair it's easier to have personality (In the main story) when your main character isn't genderless, raceless, classless, voiceless, almost-emotionless, and other things-less.

With your statement, you just about eliminated 99.9% of the RPG market.

Way to go.

You don't have to be given a blank character to have an RPG.

I didn't mean the main character, though. I mean't the world. The Witcher 2 world felt more authentic and lived in.... Skyrim's felt sort of open and empty, oddly devoid of character.

There are not many games I liked better lately. Portal 2 maybe.

But a worse RPG I've never played. Just because I can kill enemies in different ways it does not mean that it is an RPG. You can kill enemies in different ways in most games.

As you don't need to have a great story.

TES is more about your adventure than about you role-playing somebody else adventure (The Witcher). Few good RPGs had a satisfactory balance between the two things (Baldur's Gate 2 being an example)

I'm not here to jugde which one is better, I'm just saying that they have different focus.

Again, to be fair, I would say that Skyrim focus on an entire province while The Witcher focus on separated parts of a province. It's seems easier (IMHO) to put personality in a province's part than in a open-world province.

At the end they are just two different things, it's hard to compare and you can't really say (IMHO) that one is better or worse based in the another.

So playing a pre-defined character is roleplaying? How does that work then? Oh look I'm 'him' or 'her' following their pre-determined story till the end of the game. That's an RPG? You may as well watch a movie and save yourself the time.

You asked for current games and I really dont think there are any. That I know of.

The sad truth is that even a game where you only have to follow the arrow and never ever have to think or plan ahead and where your only choice is between winning and winning hard is the deepest youll get at this time.
Its like Hollywood.
Every so often, theyll have a golden age.
Its just that were on the downside of the cardboard age atm, and its not just games.
Star trek reboot? How about you get the expletive out of here and invent your own story before you butcher something people love to make it more 'dark' and 'modern' ? No sir, Ill have nothing to do with that sort of penny-squeezing malarky.

Better is such a subjectiive stance. I like most RPG and try to enjoy their uniquness. There are things Skyrim does well and things to change, that is one of the huge strengths of Bethesdas games they evolve over time and you can choose to particpate or not.

I'm with Priestly on the RPG thing. Technically, 99.9% of all games now have you playing as someone...if an RPG just means playing a pre-defined character's linear story, then, hell, even Call of Duty is an RPG in that case. RPG = customiseable character.

I traveled, on horseback, all the way from Whiterun to Dawnstar, following the roads.

During the day mind you.

I encountered no one riding horseback.

I encountered two people walking.

I encountered one group of Imperials with a Stormcloak prisoner.

It's like almost no one lives in Skyrim. You would think I would have encountered a merchant carriage... or something.

I almost saw more wolves than I did people.
