Creation Kit and DLC. Free vs $12.99

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 9:06 am

So I was looking at some sick mods and stuff that were used without the Creation Kit and I've seen a handful using the C.K. I am always amazed at what people can do and just how much they can change the game. Like adding weapons, or new homes, etc it's all stuff I cannot have. Yeah I have an Xbox 360. But that's not the point, the point is that the Creation Kit is free, from what I've read, and I know that DLC for xbox is NOT free.

Basically the PC gamers can create their own stuff for free but I have to pay for a small expansion with "a lot of meat on it". Whatever that means.

I had an idea that to me sounds awesome: Putting the mods people create on Xbox Live and PSN for us to download! I don't know exactly how it would work or if the consols could handle every mod. But I'm sure the staff can pick ones that the consols could handle.

I just do not think it's right that the Creation kit is free and DLC is not. I pad $65 for a game, which is ridiculous enough and then I have to end up spending another $10-$15 dollars per DLC?

I saw the 50+ weapons mod someone created awhile back and thought that if that was open to consol gamers that would be so cool.

I'm not starting a xbox is better than ___ thread, so please don't start saying your opinion on that. I just want to hear opinions of a possible idea of free dlc in the form of mods for us consol gamers.

Just an opinion remember that...

The problem is that Sony and Microsoft insist that they get to veto mods on their machines. Not sure why, but they're the ones controlling the situation.

Yeah but Bethesda can just use them as "updates".

I don't see how it hurts anyone since it's a 1 person game. It's not Halo 2 where you run super fast shooting scarabs out of a lightsaber. Lol

If bethesda released it as free dlc then would it still be a mod? I mean what constitutes something as a mod? Because it wasn't originally in the game? Or it was created by someone other than the creators?

It's a bloody good idea and beth can throw the mods at it without the authors consent but i think it comes down to microsoft and whether these guys had thought of it before during the negotiations otherwise it could be a long way off but you never know, that could be on the books for the future.

Hmmm MS would charge you so would'nt it be better if you bought it for your computer? then you would have free access?

Then you could create your own mods for free

I'm not being a [censored] but the authors would get angus after they realise they are'nt in the deal if your being charged for DLC

Well if I had a computer that could run skyrim I would buy it for pc, but I bought an xbox for the original halo and have been hooked to xbox ever since. I have a nice laptop but it is for school work and not a gaming computer.

I don't see why MS gets to put a price on things created by the game creators. I think that if Bethesda wants to give free DLC then that is their choice.

Now as far as using material without the author's consent.. that is wrong. I know Bethesda would get the green light and I know plenty of guys out there would gladly let their mods be free. I would hope anyways as they're free now!

My future computer will be a gaming computer no doubt.

Microsoft and Sony have to approve everything, including updates, DLCs and patches, so it wouldn't really matter what they called it. If MS/Sony don't want it, it's not going to happen.

Bethesda can't just do whatever they want; they have to pay to be licensed to make software for the 360 and Playstation 3. Realize that Microsoft and Sony aren't making boatloads of money off the consoles themselves, they're making most of their money off the games they license. In fact, I remember back in the day of the original XBox and the Playstation 2, there was speculation that Microsoft and Sony were actually selling the consoles a little below cost and taking a hit on every machine, just to get more people using their machine and buying their games.

Yeah it's free on the pc platform but try and shift that to the console and the two big ones will want a piece.theres nothing wrong with the box or p3 except their age in tech, that's the only reason why i don't like them.

if they do let mods on the consoles then it would be time to go and get a xbox

Exactly. Thats why I plan on getting a high-end laptop soon. (not just for that, I also want access to 3D modelling and design programs, because those are what I'm mostly interested in)

Even if Player-made mods did make it to console, it would be 1/100,000th of what you'd have normal access to, as Microsoft, as well as Sony I'd imagine, would have to have Bethesda police it and play test them somehow, with only the ones which are approved by all companies involved are safe and especially in Microsoft's case, profitable.

Plus, say something does go wrong 12 months down the track? Being player-made, It could happen. Who's going to be accountable? Microsoft? (I'm not sure if Sony charges for DLC) You are going to want your money back, and Microsoft won't do it, then imagine the potential thousands who got the same mod.

I love my xbox, and I wish it were so, but looking from a technical standpoint, It woud be one hellavuh mess.

Microsoft can kiss me buttocks. I only have an xbox because Halo was on it. If it weren't for that i probably wouldn't have one. I plan to go PC route since everything seems to be FREEEEEEE or you can make it yourself as a mod.

The same DLC will cost the same amount for PC users. Yes, we're probably less likely to buy it, but we do have to pay if we want those things as well.

You certainly could run a lot of the mods on consoles, but not all of them at once. The simplicity of use expected by console players would necessitate BGS/MS/Sony having a way to control the possible combinations of installed mods, even with the list of approved mods. That would be a mess. With the PC they can just leave it alone and let users having trouble ask questions on the forums or on mod sites.

I'm thinking that if Bethesda looked over the mods and made sure to correct and problems then it should be fine. Or maybe we could get them to make their version of some mods and release them to the consols?

And just know I don't want the nvde mods, the anime hair mods, or those types of mods. I want more weapons, more enemies, more armor, magic, quests, cities, and placing to discover.

I want mods that would make sense in the ES series. I don't want Master Chief armor. As cool as that would be, it isn't Skyrim. I like the texture mods too.

I just feel like the weapons base is too small. The armor choices are way to limited and then there is the fact that some armors come in stupid colors. I personally don't want green armor. I know that is the type of metal it was made from, but it's still be cool to have it in the color I want. You can mix metals ya know! Which adds way too much complexity.

More weapons, armor, etc for free. That's what I want. I just know of a sweet mod that has already created a nice bit of weaponry and I want those weapons.

I know they can't but it is their game. I feel like it's up to Bethesda to to be able to price their items.

But they can't. It's part of their agreement with Sony and MIcrosoft. Sony and MIcrosoft don't want mods for the reasons people have already mentioned: they're potentially buggy, and they don't want the hassles, and I don't blame them. Look at it this way. If you play Skyrim on a PC, and you use a mod and it screws things up, are you gonna get pissed at HP or Toshiba or whoever made your PC? No, you'll get pissed at the modder. But if it happens on a 360 or PS3, you know people will be expecting Microsoft and Sony to fix it. They don't wanna expend energy on something that doesn't bring them a dime, and I can't at all blame them.

Everything ain't free on PCs either, except for [censored] pirates that steal other peoples' work. I wouldn't be throwing stones at Microsoft, since they're the ones that made the 360 that allows you to play Halo; it's a great machine for some games.

I play Skyrim on PC because I wanted the best graphics possible and the current crop of consoles are now waaaaay behind the standard for PCs, but I don't hate consoles.

Is that all it would take? Bethesda playtesting each and every mod, alone and in combination with each other? Come on, you know that isn't feasible.

I know it is. Because Sony and Microsoft want money. I understand that. I just feel like they can come up with a system to get community created mods out there to those who want it. It sounds like a stretch but didn't the telephone when it was first thought of? Alot of ideas seems too hard to control until someone comes up with a way to control it. It just takes time and enough people to get behind it. I'm sure there is a way to do something similar to my idea. I'm sure it won't be free either, but if I only had to pay a one time payment of 1200 microsoft points to get access to mods then sign me up. And it isn't like the mods go straight from the creator to the public.

Rockband already uses a system like this now that I think of it. They have Rock Band Network songs and then songs made by the RB staff.

Do you have to pay to play online? Do you have to pay for creation kits? Do you have to pay for mods?

I am throwing stones at microsoft because they don't care about anything but money. I remember back when Halo 2 dlc came out. It was expensive but if you waited long enough it was free eventually. Now a days a game can be old and outdated but the DLC is still 1200 microsoft points.

That's not what i really meant. I'm just wanting more weapons and armor and such. Stuff that should already be in the game. The stuff they keep for DLC. I know why there weapons base is low and the armor the same way; they kept some for "dlc". And isn't DLC a mod?

But it doesn't have to be mods. I'm sure Bethesda could get a team to make some DLC that is similar to the popular mods. Again I don't want nvde mods or hair mods.

I highly doubt they'll ever allow console players to get the same user-created mods as PC users because of all the reasons previously mentioned....but what if they included a game-editor type add-on to the console games, so console users could at least modify to some extent (e.g., build houses, towns, add NPCs, etc.)? A lot of games do this type of thing and seem to not have problems.

That's possible; Halo had the Forge, after all. But think about how primitive most Forged levels were.

That's possible; Halo had the Forge, after all. But think about how primitive most Forged levels were.

Basically... a creation kit for consol users??? Yeah it was primative but still atleast we got it! It was so fun making stuff! And it two worlds the first you could basically create extremely primative houses and stuff.

I like this idea of a forge like, creation kit for us consol gamers.

And then we could come to the forums like for halo, see what other consol gamers have made, and download it to the xbox! Or something similar. Cause I am not good at editing like some people and I know within a day someone would have some awesome creations.

So I change my possible theory from mods to a creation kit/forge idea for skyrim!

What do you guys think on that? I give props to you Ayurvha and Gram for the great ideas.

A basic editor wouldn't be hard to get into skyrim would it?

Micro$oft would ban PC modding as well if it wasn't impossible to moderate. Consoles are very limited things, while PCs are almost omnipotent when it comes to programming. Like with piracy there would be no reliable way to prevent PC modding. Even games with no tools and patches intentionally breaking modding possibilities (like GTA) still have people digging up the files and making mods.
