Crossbows obscenely overpowered?

Post » Sat Nov 17, 2012 2:41 am

Not only does a steel crossbow, which you can get extremely early in the game, have the same base damage as a daedric bow (yet shoots faster), it also has a built-in 50% chance to stagger. Also, bolts are faster than arrows. After a quick quest, you can add a 50% damage penetration to the list of pros.

These weapons need to reload much, much, MUCH slower for anyone to even consider using bows again, and they shouldn't be given to fresh-faced adventurers.

That's funny. It's precisely because of roleplaying that I want balanced crossbows.

crossbows are supposed to be more powerful. they are meant for warriors, bows shoot MUCH further than cross bows, so its fine.

Source? I have never heard that before. And it's not like bows shoot very far anyway, unless you're on PC and apply the .ini tweak.

Crossbows were created to beat armor in combat, there would have been no need to create them is bows would always be good enough to get the job done. And if you feel it svcks, then put the difficulty up or just use a bow.

They are balanced - they have always been obscenely powerful compared to regular bows. The long reload time was what kept the regular bow in favour. In RP terms I'd find it ludicrous if a normal bow could cause as much damage.

Bows have much better range. And crossbows are noisy. So there are tradeoffs.

and another thing. i dont know why anyone would complain, they arent over powered. they do more damage yes but would you want the dlc to add new weak weapons? of course not. and i dont see you complaining about the dragonbone bow that does more damage then daedric and shoots much faster. possibly more dmg per second then the dwarven xbow.

My Nordic warrior who joined the Dawnguard never got around to using a bow, eventually picked up a crossbow and actually used it. I liked it more for him than a bow. Had nothing to do with damage.

My dunmer stealth vampire who joined the Volkihars has a crossbow from the first mission, but I still use an ebony bow instead. Because I want to use a bow instead of a crossbow.

I don't understand how anything in this type of game is "overpowered". If you don't like it why the heck would you use it?

Seriously, if something is "overpowered" in Skyrim you have the option to not use it.

Battlefield or COD have weapons that are occasionally OP. That is because people exploit it!

yeah, I use crossbows in close quarter situations (caves/tunnels)... Just doesn't make sense trying to manuever a bow in those situations. All the same- what people said, if you don't like it, I suggest just not using it. Although I'm sure you're as human as the rest of us and are just magnetically attracted to power. So, I'm sure regardless of the complaint- you'll still use it.

As a stealthy archer/swordsman I actually prefer the bow myself... Something about the crossbow feels a bit off to me.

On my archer I use both. I use crossbow for close to mid range for the extra damage, with perks the reload time isn't that long. I then use my bow for long to very long range targets. From playing the game I have notice that Daedric Bow arrows fly alot farther then crossbow bolts, so in the end they are fairly balanced. The armor pen on the crossbow doesn't do so much for fact that most enemies in the game have very little to no armor.

The 50% armor penetration sounds better than it actually is when you remember that no enemy has more than ~100 armor, which is nothing. The vast majority in fact have no armor rating at all. The way Bethesda designed the enemies is that they wear armor for aesthetics, but have few/no relevant perks and have no smithing enhancements. To compensate for this, they simply gave all enemies obscene amounts of health.

Oh god don't, I have Famas moans etched into my brain  I never got the big deal about that gun, the only way it was superior was if both combatants fired at the precise same time - that never ever happens.

Anyway, it was about 10th on my KDR list if I remember correctly, the commando was top and my favourite weapon was the HK21 (find another relatively high prestige player with THAT on their combat record :D)

On topic: I agree, OP is a completely different concept in a single player game. Especially one where you can tailor your effectiveness. If we were RPing, the crossbow would pretty much one-shot everything.

My main issue with the crossbow is that it's available so soon, unlike the dragonbone weapons. I'd like to use the damn weapon, but I don't want to break my game, nor do I want to delay using it until I'm high level.

Guess I'll have to wait for the pc version and mods.
