Is Dawnguard really worth $20? #2

Post » Sat Nov 17, 2012 12:14 pm

NO, it's not worth $20. The quests are pretty much the same no matter which side you choose, the Vampire and Wearwolf perk tree should have been included in regular game, the Vampire Lord looks stupid and forces you into 3rd person view.

The bottom line is that for $20 we should have gotten a MINIMUM of 2 completely different quest lines so that there is a reason to play both sides instead of doing the same thin they did with the Civil War quests and make it useless to play both sides.

Probably cost you more for a pint in London.

This. Or 3 or so pints in Cardiff. Just cut back over the weekend and you'll have Dawnguard covered . Seriously though, I wonder if this is partly the reason people's opinions differ so much - here in the UK it's priced at £13.99, which may be just about $20 in terms of the exchange rate, but when you compare it in terms of what you can actually buy with £13.99, Dawnguard doesn't look too bad.
Maybe $20 will just go a bit further than £13.99?

Oh I don't know, three pints in Cardiff is tempting ;)

I'd go for the beer.
By all accounts 3 beers would last longer and have less bugs in them. :D

Seriously though, one of the other posters mentioned that none of the NPCs are marriageable, as if that's some massive problem and obstacle - I simply fail to see why that would be the case, in and of itself.
I've no intention of buying it myself, I don't think it's badly priced - (in £s) - but I don't think it has anything to offer me that I would want to pay money for.

Jeez, stop whining.
Dawnguard dlc is a solid example of good work. Especially that we don't have many working quest mods around.
Just try to enjoy a games than demand always something more. I found Dawnguard very good piece of code and for sure it lasts longer than 3 beers ;)
But if you hate to roleplay and always use faast travel, think twice before buying it as well as any crpg game.

It's not the price of a pint which worries me, it's the rent rates. I mean, if the properties were nice I could understand. I saw a two bedroom flat with a half collapsed kitchen floor due to the previous tenant allowing their washing machine to leak long enough to go through the floor, it had a crappy boiler (saunier duval, just ask the next gasman you see how bad these are), generally poor conversion (it was a house split into two), and you could clearly converse with the guy downstairs due to paper thin sprung flooring. Which was also in the kitchen. Which meant the washing machine rattled the entire building AND both neighbours houses too. The asking price, which would not be budged from, was £950 a month.

And by London rates, that's cheap...

Yeah, I think Dawnguard is worth $20, £14, whatever.

I quite like the story (There're some plotholes, but I'm willing to overlook them), some of the NPCs are pretty cool, and some of the dungeons are really, really wonderful. I've ran into a few quest-breaking bugs so far, but I've been able to fix them with console-commands so it's no biggie - I find that part of the fun anyhow, getting around bugs. Maybe I'm far too lenient about bugs and stuff, but as long as they can be fixed/worked around they don't really bother me.

The lack of new land didn't bother me too much either, as I'm fairly happy to travel across Skyrim to get around anyway. Either that or I have the memory of a goldfish, and I wouldn't remember what Riverwood looked like if I visited it twenty times in an hour.

The answer is simple: If you want something, it's worth the price! QED

I like skyrim and I want to play something different. Given the number of hours I have played the game vs the cost.......

Well, it is hard to find entertainment that cheap. Hehe, probably as cheap as they go. Especially when compared to a girlfriend or even worse a wife! Lol.

But seriously, who the hell cares about 20 bucks? If you like the base game, then get it. Now I would complain if they were offering horse armor for 20!

Witcher Dev: DLC Should be a Free Service

CD Projekt RED’s Konrad Tomaszkiewicz believes that DLC should be given to gamers for free as thanks for legitimately purchasing a title.

I think its fine to charge something for good DLCs, but no DLC is worth US$ 20. This is a expansion pack price.

the DLC isnt worth 20$ since break my game more that add new stuff, and the worst is that im not using mods, so i cant blame then. Today i read a interwiev with Witcher 2 team about how DLC should be free since they arent adding much to the game, isnt like old time Expations pack that add a new big main quest or a full new area. Is really sad that all game just do DLC now, i will love to see a actual expation pack and i will paid 20$ or more, man is more Beth have done it in the past with game like Fallout 3 with Point lockout, or Oblivion with TSI, i dont know why they just go back to the past and keep using what they know will work.

I don't fault Beth for wanting to turn a profit - they'll just have to do it at someone else's expense.

Yes it is. Dawnguard adds a lot to the game. Think of it this way.. When you play CoD, you pay almost as much for a couple of bad, new maps. Then you play Skyrim and pay this price and get new weapons, new enemies, pretty much 2 completely new questlines, new armor, new items, new shouts, new potions......

Yep, definitely worth it.

Why should you care? Just play New Vegas in the mean time or move on to another game.
Cause that means we'll have to wait even longer for Fallout 4 to be released.
And the anticipation/fear of finding out whether it will be New Vegas With Guns or Skyrim With Guns is killing me.

Only 20% of bethesda is working on DLC.. This has always been true..

Yeah, but do you think they'll announce or even release the game while they're milking TES?
I doubt it.

Well honestly it's subjective, I personally prefer to buy add-ons for a current game I love and want to pump a few more hours into (20 hours for my part , I was basically paying 1euro/hour which is quite reasonable :) ) than just move on and buy another game which would probably be more expensive ! (I never buy secondhand and I don't buy cheap games cause cheap games are old and not up to date)

You can't actually measure anything other than the questline in this DLC . Why ? Because some additions stick with you for the rest of the game! I know I'm going to use the crossbow during the rest of the game and future DLCs with my assassin ! And starting a new character to be a vampire lord is immensely rich roleplay-wise (Having to change your habits because you're a vampire , sneaking up on sleeping villagers when they are asleep , transforminf into your original form when you face multiple ennemies, etc). Your new followers and pets will accompany you through the main game's questlines ! Having Arvak when you are overencumbered is also really neat when you'll be carrying too much loot !

And I know this is completely biased, if you have the game , finished the main quest and guilds and stopped there, I'd understand your choice not to buy the add-on. But for an addict like me, who has been looking up pages on the elder scrolls wiki to learn more about the dwemer and other races for the lore (no spoilers even though most of you haters are determined not to get it) , I managed to appreciate every bit of it, reading the new books as I went, crafting my Crossbow as I imagine my future stealth kills for the Dark Brotherhood Contracts ... It's just like Call of Duty, hardcoe players will love every bit of their new maps and it's not faire to compare them to sheep, pigeons or any other animal .

The more you whine, the more you hate the DLC . I have played before reading all of those nasty little threads; aftermath : I am satisfied with my experience and am ready for future Skyrim DLC . I'd okay with spending 20 euros for a game that has prevented me from buying new ones due to its lifespan and replayability !
You didn't like it ? Fine! you are entitled to your opinion !

PS : One thing that annoyed me was the locale marketing or whatever you call it . In France, only one option is available : the French version ! People who bought Skyrim proper in English (with or withouth subtitles)? Screwed ! I had to create a British account just to get Dawnguard in English ... Well I did save 3 euros thanks to the conversion from GBP to EUR... :P is 17 euros still too expensive ?! haha

Just took a look at some of the UESP wiki pages. Of all the new (80-ish) NPC's, NONE are marriageable. Apparently quite a few people are up in blogs because the primary heroine can't be married.

They're probably waiting so they can charge us like $10 to be able to marry her.

There's actually some truth to this statement because Modern Warfare 3 charges you $15 for like two new maps and two old ones from previous games. Quite ridiculous when you think about.
