Dawnguard: 'Oh That Elder Scroll!'

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 7:50 am

I never said it was going to be a bad DLC! Seriously people, read! One plot mechanic!

Reading is sadly underated. I would be surprised if anyone (generalization I know) actually read anything beyond the first post...

The next elder scroll we see will most likely allow the snow to build up on the ground, and not simply be a texture...

Ussually DLC is not taken into being actual LORE, more of just a fun addition to the game. Much like Shivering Isles, there is no recorded lore that i know of mentioning the Champion of the oblivion crisis become the new Sheogorath.

Spoiler

Do the Sheogorath quest. Sheogorath clearly says "And then Martin became a dragon...I was there you know". If you don't feel like replaying the quest search for it on youtube.

I agree  it seems no matter what Bethesda do - there is always someone with a negative point of view. What difference does it make if they use an Elder Scroll or not? Can`t you just appreciate the Dawnguard DLC and enjoy it without critising it? If it bothers you that much - then sell Skyrim an join another forum.

Why`s it ignorant exactly? The guy has formed an opinion purely on a brief trailer for DLC that hasn`t been released yet.Why doesn`t he actually wait until Dawngaurd is released, then play it through from start to finish to see why they used an Elder Scroll before making any comments?

It may be hinted at, Yes... but its not a major part of the story.

I understand where you're going with this, but I think that if they aren't contradicting themselves with regard to TES lore, then there really isn't much to complain about other than wishing that Elder Scrolls weren't seemingly becoming so commonplace.

Anyhow, it's the first DLC, we don't really know what to expect from the short trailer that's been put out there.

Fallout 3 had several DLCs. Some of them were OK, some of them were good, some of them were great. I'll be buying this one anyway to check it out.

I fear continued sidetracking and me shooting my mouth off at people who refuse to read will lead to the eventual locking of this thread. I'm sorry.

Peace. :thanks:

like i've been saying well before dawnguard was announced, we're using an elder scroll to time travel or bring something thru time to the current time...i think thats how vamp lords will fit in the story, they're future vamps. The crossbow is a future invention and neither has vamp lords or crossbows been seen anywhere in the past so yea we're breaking 88mph

great scott! thats heavy

I don't really think that a cross bow screams out future. In the elder scrolls world there are ships with sails, catapults and some other fancy things. A cross bow I don't think is that far off. Now, the first cannon or gun I see; I'll make sure I come back and edit this post.

a Deus Ex Machina is an entity or character that appears with no precedence in the story to immediately resolve the plot. Given that Elder Scrolls are prominent in the lore, and their potential is known (But not understood) I don't really think this qualifies.

The Crucible in Mass Effect 3 was a plot device, the catalyst(Starchild) was a Deus Ex Machina.

Still, I'm unsure of how exactly an Elder Scroll is supposed to do something to the sun. Maybe the belief that Coldharbour is simply an example of Nirn's future is true, and using the Elder Scroll hastens the transformation?

Ah - Finally someone articulates the correct definition of a deus ex machine!

This is a fantasy game for pete's sake! Pause a bit and consider that. I have played only one ES game - Skyrim. I've looked up a few things on-line that i wished to get more information about, and most was useful. But I still take this as mindless entertainment - albeit well done.

I have read many fantasy novels in my life, and in the Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, their world was under the influence of a magical bane that altered the appearance of the sun, and caused a whole lot of other damaging effects..... So for me mucking about with the sun - I can handle that.

Given my limited exposure, The Elder Scroll idea actually works for me as a focal point of a DLC. Given the plot of vampires attempting to take over the world - now THERE"S something original - someone trying to conquer the world! (no one has a problem with that as a tired element), i can see how they can write a story involving obtaining an elder scroll to effect their aim of blotting out the sun. (I can simply tell them: all they need to do is storm the College of Winterhold and get it from the library there.) I will of course be getting the DLC, and hope it is worth it.

I hope I haven't offended any purists, but I play for the simple enjoyment, I don't take it too seriously, and so far I've been able to tolerate the story. I guess those of us without enough knowledge of the ES lore are at an advantage here - we can simple ooooh and ahhhh at what gets tossed our way.

I guess I'll hold off getting my Lycanthropy cured!

Can't wait to see how it turns out - I hope it's long enough!

Amazing how many have only read the OP and a few posts before their own.

I agree to some extent that the Elder Scrolls are certainty playing a more familiar theme in this game in comparison to the others, but considering the small amount of knowledge we know about them anyway (and hell even the DLC) I can bet that it'll fit nicely into the lore.

Molag Bal seduced Vivec and spawned a group of mutant degenerates in the Molag Amur region of Morrowind. This group became the first eventual vampires.
I think that the vampires in Dawnguard are the vampire in this group because of the alter of Molag Bal in the trailer.

It does seem to be getting a little bit common using a scroll for a plot point or a focal point of a story, if they start using them for everything they will loose their mystery and intrigue and just become another item within the game world. I am with those that hope this is not a trend to have every story and quest based off of the elder scrolls, if that's the case they make that item just another generic fantasy item.

looks like your using it as a map, and appearing three times in 5 games that feature "elder scrolls" in the title doesn't seem that bad

Why bother blotting out the sun when you could just use some Sunscreen? "The Elder Scrolls Foretold of it's creation!"

Except the lore never mentioned an ability like this for the Elder Scrolls. Before Skyrim, all that was known about the scrolls was that they unwaveringly recorded history and could not be altered, while also showing possible futures. Then Skyrim came and out of nowhere it was like "oh yeah, and they can send you back in time." No explanation given as to how or why they have this power, just that they do because no one knows exactly how they work. Now with Dawnguard it's like "oh yeah, and they can block out the sun." Again, an ability out of nowhere that was never so much as hinted as being possible before. I bet with the enxt DLC, it'll be like "oh yeah, and they can respec you."

It's a cheap plot device, having an artifact that can't be explained and whose power is changed at the whim of the writer. It shows a lack of creativity, and ruins consistency the more it happens.
Why not wait to see how they use it? just because they used ittwice now (OB doesn't count, you weren't the one useing it, you were the grey fox's errand boy) doesn't mean they've started over-relying on it. Just wait & see until you make assumptions.

(slightly) funny story..

I played Oblivion again, did the thieves guild quests, got the Elder Scroll.. then felt strangely compelled not to give it to the Gray Fox. Instead I punched him flat in the face and expelled myself from the guild.

Seriously, what would I want with Noctuna's Cowl? No daedric artifact matches the might of an Elder Scroll! I can block suns, erase identities from history, travel through time. Holy [censored]!
