Did Skyrim desrve GOTY?

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 11:40 am

no as a ps3 owner the game was a outrage if it was a xbox/pc game sure, how it was released for ps3 is really odd. made me even more mad is that bethesda got best dev team after their ps3 port was so bad even if it was released perfectly, i think batman arkham city should have won

I enjoyed the Witcher 2, great fun, but it had it's share of problems and was more of an action game than RPG at times.

For replay value i always like TES games, always get my moneys worth, so Skyrim is my GOTY, love the open world where you can decide what to do and when to do it, go at your own pace.

I think SKYRIM deserved Game Of The Year if not the decade alongside FALLOUT 3 and the DLCs. There are a few other games i squeezed in that i have enjoyed but are different animals to SKYRIM such as BATMAN ARKHAM CITY which has a wonderful sandbox playstyle too. Then theres the secret gem no one is probably playing called SERIOUS SAM 3 with its huge maps unique weapons and nutty humour. Theres also KINGDOMS OF ALAMUR: RECKONING with its blending of many rpg styles forming a very unique exciting experiance. I also enjoyed THE WITCHER 2 with its brutal and strangely romantic world.

SKYRIM though is just so open and massive with the choice of the player being anything they want at any time during their journey without even having to start a new character.

No.
Portal 2 or The Witcher 2
Both had better stories, much tighter gameplay, and great voice acting overall.
I don't care how long you can play a game while having fun (or Tetris would win GoTY every time) but how good the experience is in that time frame. Skyrim offers consistently good gameplay but nothing that is ever fantastic like what is done Portal 2 and TW2.

it was game of the year in my book. the reason being it has near limitless possibilities thats always a good thing in my book it keeps me on the game for quite some time now if indie games were thrown into the mix of the big game devs it might have a tie with Minecraft haha.

I am not sure, I think games that break new ground should be rewarded, Skyrim takes a very safe route and brings very little new to the series or the genre. But what other game really broke new ground in 2011? Frozen Synapse perhaps...

The game has its quirks and flaws (and sometimes I write about those), but it certainly was my GotY. Not only did have a silly amount of content, it also improved in quality. Although some RPG-elements have been streamlined, I never felt it was dumbed down. The omission of classes only allowed me to play how I wanted. I do feel it shouldn't be streamlined more, though, and I would be happy if a future title added some more features.

Skyrim deserves to be Game of The Year and it deserves to be the "Best" and the "Greatest" RPG game in the world basicly!!!, and, Mods and Console Commands makes Skyrim greater!!!

No. I'd put in the top 5 though. Arkham City and Deus Ex are better. Not just "different", but better imo.

While Skyrim was probably my game of the year, I think that Portal 2, Deus Ex or LA Noire were more deserving, and I would have been happy to see any of those win.

It was my GOTY, and that's the only one I care about.

Goty awards are always a joke.

LA Noire, Batman Arkham City, Uncharted 3, Portal 2, Deus-Ex, Assassin's Creed: Revelations. All these games were released in 2011. As much I love Skyrim a game that has had so many problems across all it's platforms should not be GotY

No. It took several big, obvious steps back from its predecessor which is unjustifiable. Personally I think they didn't give themselves enough time - they should have pushed it back at least a couple of months to give them time to flesh out the guilds, make bigger cities, more NPCs, etc.

No doubt GOTY..... Simply because, Ive been playing Skyrim and pretty much nothing else since 11.11.11..... Cant remember when I last played a game that much.

I haven't even bought any new game since I bought Skyrim.. That says alot.

Skyrim trusts the player, rather than directing the player around the experience with linear design and set pieces etc. I dont like to be told how to play or even how to win, I like to discover this for myself.

Skyrim is different. It lets me create my own fun, tell my own story and experiment. This is why Skyrim stands out from the rest.

There are few games out there that can claim to have the scope and freedom of Skyrim.

Sure.
I bought Deus ex and expected a lot from it, but was disappointed. Boring story and zero replay-value killed it for me.

So you think a game could not be conisdered a classic just because the developers did not want to take the time to port it to one of the two consoles? That's like saying a movie shouldb't be picture of the year just because it wasn't going to be ported to blue ray.

Yes.

I think a game should be "tested" by the widest audience.... It would be like showing a movie in only one or two countries and then declaring that it was the best movie of the year based on narrowed reviews... However I do think a game can be considered a classic, as you say, but not a GOTY.

This was way too short of a public play run to even find out for many what was in the game, let alone all the problems and glitches it has before "voting" was done for any GOTY.

Just to add... some games are rememberd as "classic" because of how terribly bugged they were.... Skyrim just might get that award. In seven character builds since 11-11-11, I have yet to finish the MQ because too many quests get glitched... eighth time is the charm. (exploration = broken quests)

Isn't GOTY voted for by industry insiders and not the people who bought and played the game?

I think so, it probably also involves a fair amount of money too. ;)

Yes, I do wonder about these awards. Who does the awarding? Really. Who? The Player? I don`t see who`s doing these awards. It`s like the Oscars. the ordinary person doesn`t get a say.

And we`re all supposed to bow down and just agree with it? Hey, is this a Democracry or am I in a Totalitarian state where i`m told what to think by people `better` than me?

I mean I could do it too:

Blade Watcher has won 20 awards for the most Righteous and Proper Forumer on the Bethesda forums and also winning the `Don`t think of Him as your boss, but as your friend who is always Right` award!

It`s true because he got all these Awards for it. Just don`t ask who voted for him or where these awards all came from- Just give him your donations to his Swiss bank account.

It`s just propaganda.

Skyrim Imo does deserve goty, since It made me stop playing other games out at the time. Metal gear solid (remake on 360), gow3 (even though I beat it), Ac rev., Cod mw3 (even though beat that as well). Most of the games I beat around Skyrim. I haven't played since Skryim. I love it. :)
