Dissapointing direction with Hearthfire, Bethesda...

Post » Wed Aug 29, 2012 3:17 am

I assume people have seen the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvhQZoyZn1g. For those who havent, give it a watch. I'll wait.

Done, okay, hold whatever you are about to say, lemme go into my comments on this. Dont worry, it'll be short, to the point, and hopefully level-headed.

First off, a "home mod" DLC for $5 is fair-ish, considering its content. Its essentially a more Skyrim and more homey one. Building it up from scratch, hiring folks to take care of it, moving your spouse to it, adopting kids.

We've all seen this (cept the move-your-spouse bit, that was obviously inspired from the modding community) in the Game Jam video.

Its all a massively missed opportunity. Why?

Well, I'll direct you to a http://www.reddit.com/r/skyrim/comments/yolhl/hearthfire_speculation/c5xhcfp stating the following (before the trailer was released, in a sort-of predictions deal), in short:

1. Hoping for a "home mod" indeed, only on a larger scale. How large? Think "becoming a Jarl" large. Fighting for, taking over, and owning a castle and surrounding lands. Being the warrior king/queen and protecting it as it starts out small, weak, and an easy target from would-be power-takers like large bandit groups, Thalmor, necromancers, etc. Nothing speaks of making a mark on Skyrim as much as becoming a Jarl and ruling their little slice of Skyrim.

2. Even lays out a likely background story behind it. Player-character ends up fighting a powerful necromancer (going into the spirit of Hearthfire, which is October in TES lore, Halloween anyone?) for said home, and then fixing it up and defending it from his minions as he attempts to take it back, etc. Even goes so far as to hiring guards and defending it tower-defense style. Killing zombies(draugr for us), fighting against the darkness, and http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/22330 your http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/22330.

3. Even states new weapons like the spear we've seen in the Game Jam video. Who doesnt want to see that used in mounted combat?

Cmon Bethesda. We're expecting more than this, and whilst the coverage of Dawnguard was great, taking two steps back and going back to the horse armor DLC level of mediocre is not what you want to aim for to maintain a viable marketing buzz over your game.

For the first time I'm disappointed with Bethesda.

What happened to only giving out major sized dlc??

This is just like Battlethorn Castle. I remember back in Oblivion days when people said they'd rather have had a Kvatch rebuild than silly dlc like Battlethorn, Frostcrag & Horse armor.

I'd rather have had a Winterhold rebuild where you can rebuild a city than this

I'm not overly excited. If the plots of land are all out in the middle of nowhere then I've already made my mind up that I won't be buying it

Having your own castle would be awesome just like in Oblivion through the Fighters Stronghold DLC.

This would actually be a fun and good DLC to use if we knew they were close to also releasing another bigger than dawnguard DLC later in Sept or even the first of October.. i mean theres so many things they could do , with the College of Winterhold or even the threat of the Thalmor.. maybe it won be to much longer for a BIG DLC

I'm sure they'll become fast travel locations.

That make little difference.

I am supposed to be the Dovakiin. Not some recluse who lives in the woods where no one can see me

I like it :D This is the last 360 exclusive DLC, so we won't have to worry about spoilers and that crap anymore :)

Plus, it's way more content console users normally could get. So I don't really see bad points there.

Someone will always find a reason to complain.

I think it's awesome. You want to be Jarl. Good for you. How will that work? How would you make it work? Infinite quests where townspeople come to you with small matters and taxes? You like that? And if you miss out on only a few of these "minor things" and they add up and you get replaced.

Yes, controlling a county sounds cool, but I don't know how that could possibly be anymore interesting than building and maintaining your own house and land. Exterminating Skeevers would be just as trivial as protecting a town from a few bandits every now and then.

It could be done well, but it's not going to be. Get over it. Don't hate on this just because it's different from what you wanted.

I'd like to live up along the Northern coast, or on one of those big, empty islands up there, but for some dark reason I imagine that won't be a possibility.

Build your own home sounds fun. It looks to me like a little side project a bit of the staff made while the rest are plugging away on something bigger. I'm happy they let a few guys be creative and see what they could make for us. Besides, this may lay the groundwork for some awesome mods.

1. BGS announced very early on that their plans were for larger full DLCs with sporadic smaller bits of candy in between.
2. $5 is a pittance for what you're getting, like it or not.
3. Not every DLC has to have a major quest line, and, in fact, $5 is quite reasonable for one that doesn't.
4. Mods can never compare to OEM content. They just... can't. They're bugged out on a lot of systems, and even long-established mods can hose your entire install (just had this happen with Morrowind). So, some of us don't touch mods at all.
5. Would I have liked a "more story" DLC, well yeah, sure, who wouldn't. But, at the price, and released on the heels of DG, Hearthfire is hardly "disappointing".

I'm at a loss for words how disappointed I am with a house building sim.

Cooking bread and adopting are not what Elder Scrolls is about. It's about adventure, magic and hack and slash.

The next DLC better be balls to the wall awesome with spears to make me happy again.

Someone will always find a reason to complain.

I used to think this when I've read various threads since the release of Skyrim and Dawnguard.

Dawnguard I was really happy with. Skyrim I totally love and totally forgave the team even though there was masses of glitches / bugs.

This time around I feel very different.

Bethesda said they were only going to release big dlc and not money spinners. Stupidly I believed them

If you don't get that Skyrim is a RPG, it's your problem. If that's all you care about, you could as well go back to Halo.

one thing I did notice in the trailer was that the Nord guy who are asked about where to find glass in the trailer was called "Steward" so perhaps we can become an jarl afterall

although granted Jarls are for nords so you might be called something else considering not everyone plays as nords (i play an a imperial & breton for example so might be called lord perhaps?)

Every part of this has already been in mods, and they even ripped the UI and "crafting table" directly from a build-your-own-house mod. Incidentally, something that I assume this DLC doesn't have, since it was not mentioned and every shot there showed the same boring house? Modularity. In the mod they are ripping off to begin with, there were three basic themes for your house, as well, iirc, as more modularity in general- Not everyone would end up with the same house by the end of it. This is just adding a largeish house to the game, a la the skingrad house in oblivion, and making you build it instead of buy it, from what I'm seeing.

Honestly, Bethesda is better than most non-indie studios, but this is pretty low. Not even worth five bucks imo.

Well, it's something atleast, I just wonder how many new bugs we'll get with it :) They should fix up the little things first and then add on to it, instead of adding on, and making it even mor complex to fix after.

Is this confirmed?

If I'm correct then this is around £2.50 in Sterling.

This makes me a bit happier :)

Skyrim is an action RPG, not a sims RPG.

Someone on this board is disappointed in Bethesda? ALERT THE MEDIA!

As for me, here's my Hearthfire dream-house: No doors, no walls, no roof. Just a yard fully of every crafting workstation in the game, plus assorted chests and a bed. Everything in one place, with no need for a load screen to get from one thing to another. My dream comes true.

The day before: SKYRIM HAS NOTHING TO DO OTHER THAN GOING TO DUNGEONS AND KILLING THINGS!

Today: SKYRIM HAS NO PLACE FOR THINGS OTHER THAN GOING TO DUNGEONS AND KILLING THINGS!

This greatly reminds me of the "children" complaint back in the day...

And complaining about small things because they are small is kinda ridiculous, especially seeing in the Dawnguard thread a number of people asking for different Dawnguard feature like the barber or fletching sold separately.
How does this change... anything? Why is this bad, I don't get it.
